Bay Bolete Identification Guide
A step-by-step read of Imleria badia in the field: the smooth chestnut cap that turns greasy in rain, pores that flush blue-green within seconds, and a streaky stalk with no net or dots. Includes separation from porcini, red-cracking boletes and Suillus.
The Setting
Late summer through late autumn, in conifer woodland on acid ground — spruce and pine plantations especially — where deep needle litter alternates with cushions of moss. It also occurs under beech and oak on poor, sandy or peaty soils. It is one of the last boletes still fruiting when the nights turn cold, and it will carry on producing after the first light frosts have finished everything else.
Fruit bodies come singly and in small scattered groups, and one habit is worth carrying in your head from the start: this species is quite willing to fruit on and around rotting stumps, mossy logs and buried decaying wood.
First Impression
A solid, dark chestnut dome sitting in moss on a stout brown stalk. In dry weather the cap is matt and suede-like and reads as a dull deep brown. After rain it is polished and slightly greasy to the touch, and the colour deepens to the rich red-brown of a bay horse, which is where the name comes from.
Before you do anything else, press a fingertip on the pore surface. A clean blue-green bruise appearing within a few seconds is the single fastest test in the field and it puts you in a very short list immediately.
The Cap
Four to fifteen centimetres, occasionally to twenty. Hemispherical when young with an inrolled margin, expanding through convex to broadly convex and finally almost flat in large old specimens.
The surface is smooth and even — importantly, it is not conspicuously cracked into a tiled mosaic. It is finely velvety when young and dry, becomes bald with age, and turns distinctly tacky to slightly viscid when wet, so that needles and leaf fragments stick to it. The margin is even and does not project as a sterile flap beyond the tubes.
Pores and Tubes
Small and round, roughly one to two per millimetre. Pale cream to lemon-yellow in young specimens, ageing to olive-yellow and finally a dull greenish tone.
The staining test: touch, press or scratch the surface and it flushes blue-green, sometimes vividly, within seconds. Over the following minutes the blue fades and settles to a dirty brownish stain. It is one of the promptest pore reactions among the brown-capped boletes.
Beneath, the tubes are eight to fifteen millimetres deep, the same yellow to olive tone as the pore mouths, depressed in a distinct moat around the stalk apex, and they lift away from the cap flesh as a single clean layer when pushed with a thumb.
The Stipe
Five to twelve centimetres by one to four thick, cylindrical to slightly club-shaped or spindle-shaped, firm and solid all the way through.
The ground colour is a pale ochre or clay-brown, streaked and flecked along its length with fine darker brown longitudinal fibrils, generally paler and more yellowish just below the tubes and darker toward the base. Handling darkens it slightly.
Now tick off the negative characters deliberately, because they are what exclude the main confusions: no raised white network anywhere on the stalk; no shaggy dark scabers; no glandular dots; no ring and no veil remnant. Running a finger up the stalk should feel smooth-fibrillose, not embossed and not rough.
The Base
Tapered or a little swollen, seated in litter and bound with white to pale ochre mycelial strands that gather needles and moss. When the fungus is fruiting from buried wood these strands often run visibly to a decaying root or stump fragment, which is worth exposing with a knife.
Flesh and Colour Change
Cut the mushroom vertically from cap centre through the stalk base. The flesh is firm and white to very pale lemon, becoming more distinctly yellow immediately beneath the tube layer and toward the stalk apex.
The colour change on cutting is real but modest. A pale blue or blue-green flush develops above the tubes and sometimes in the upper stalk within a minute, then usually fades back to pallid or dingy buff. If your mushroom instead turns intensely and instantly deep blue right through, stop and look again at the pore colour, because that behaviour belongs elsewhere. The smell is mild and pleasantly fungal.
Taking a Spore Print
The deep tube layer makes this slower than a gilled mushroom. Cut the cap free, set it pore-side down on white paper, cover it with a bowl to exclude draughts, and leave four to eight hours.
The deposit is olive-brown to olive-ochre. Under the microscope the spores are smooth and subfusiform, roughly 12–15 by 4–5.5 micrometres, which is standard for the bolete group and confirms you are not looking at something with a different fertile surface arrangement.
Partner Trees, Substrate and Season
This is an ectomycorrhizal fungus, associating chiefly with Norway spruce, Scots pine and other conifers, and also with beech and oak. It shows a clear preference for acid soils — sandy heathland, peaty plantation floors, mossy conifer stands.
Its willingness to fruit from decaying conifer stumps and buried rotten wood is unusual enough to be useful: a brown bolete apparently growing out of wood is a point in favour of this species rather than a reason to doubt the genus.
Season runs from July into November in Europe, later than most boletes and tolerant of cool nights. It is widespread across temperate Europe and occurs in eastern North America as well.
Separating It from Look-alikes
Xerocomellus chrysenteron and the red-cracking group. Smaller and more slender, with a cap surface that cracks into a mosaic showing pink or red in the fissures, larger and more angular pores, and a stalk streaked with red. Their blueing is weak and slow.
Xerocomus subtomentosus. Olive-brown to yellow-brown velvety cap that stays dry, larger angular bright yellow pores that bruise only faintly if at all, and a stalk that is often coarsely ribbed near the top.
The Boletus edulis group. Similar chestnut cap colours, but the stalk is thick, pale and covered in a fine raised white net at least in its upper part; the pores are white then yellowish and do not blue on touch; and the flesh stays white and unchanging.
Neoboletus luridiformis. Pores orange to blood-red rather than yellow, a stalk covered in fine red dots, and an immediate, intense, deep-blue change through the whole fruit body.
Suillus species. Viscid to frankly slimy caps, glandular dots or a ring on the stalk, pores often radially arranged and larger, and no strong blue reaction.
Hemileccinum impolitum. Yellow-brown cap, yellow pores, finely granular stalk, and flesh that does not blue.
Baorangia bicolor (North America). Rose-red cap and stalk with yellow pores that blue slowly.
Tylopilus species. Pores that become pinkish in age and a pink-brown spore print rather than olive.
