Bell Morel Identification Guide

A field guide to Verpa conica: the thimble-shaped brown cap that hangs free from the top of the stipe, the cottony hollow stem, and how a single vertical cut separates it from true morels.

The First Impression

Spring, a hedge bank, and something small and brown standing upright in the grass under a hawthorn. From a couple of paces it reads as a dark thimble balanced on a pale stick. The cap is a smooth to gently wrinkled brown bell, two to four centimetres tall, sitting on a cream stipe of five or ten centimetres, and the whole thing has the slightly odd, top-heavy look of the spring cup fungi. Fruiting is usually scattered rather than gregarious, a few individuals along a stretch of bank, and because the colouring blends with dead grass and last year's leaves they are far easier to miss than to identify once found.

The Setting and Season

This is a spring fungus, appearing from roughly March into May depending on latitude and how the winter has run, and it is largely finished before the main summer fungi begin. It favours calcareous ground: chalk and limestone hedgerows, woodland margins, old green lanes, scrubby banks and stabilised dune systems. Associated woody plants are typically hawthorn and blackthorn, with ash, elm and elder also frequent. Look along the base of the hedge line, in short grass and thin leaf litter rather than in dense shade. The season is short, so if you find a site it is worth returning to the same few metres in later springs.

Reading the Cap

The cap is bell-shaped, conical or thimble-like, roughly one and a half to three centimetres wide and often slightly taller than it is broad. Colour runs from tan through olive-brown and mid-brown to a dark date-brown, sometimes darkening with age.

The surface is the key. It is smooth or marked only with shallow, irregular, meandering wrinkles and low folds. It does not carry the deep, sharply defined honeycomb of pits and raised ribs that a true morel shows. If you find yourself describing sharp vertical ridges enclosing distinct pits, stop and reconsider the identification.

The outer surface of the bell is the fertile face where the spore sacs sit; the inner face is pale, dull and sterile.

The Single Most Important Test

Attachment settles this fungus. Take a whole fruit body and slice it vertically from the top of the cap right down through the base of the stipe with a sharp blade, then open the two halves.

In the Bell Morel the cap is joined to the stipe only at the very apex, at a single small point, and everything below that hangs completely free like a skirt or a thimble slipped over a finger. You can, on a fresh specimen, lift the cap edge with a fingertip and see daylight all the way up inside to the top. That free-hanging cap is the character that names the genus.

In a true morel the cap is fused to the stipe along its whole length, so the cut section shows a continuous wall with one uninterrupted hollow chamber from the cap apex to the stipe base and no free skirt at all. In the half-free morel the cap is attached about halfway down, so the skirt exists but is only half the cap's length, and the cap is ribbed and pitted rather than smooth.

The Stipe, Base and Interior

The stipe is four to ten centimetres tall and one to two centimetres thick, cylindrical or tapering slightly upward, cream to whitish or very pale buff. Its surface is finely mealy or granular, and it often shows faint transverse bands of scurf, giving a subtly ringed look under a lens. There is no true ring, no volva and no bulb.

Inside, the stipe is hollow but loosely stuffed with white, cottony, floccose fibres, particularly in young material; older specimens become more emptily hollow as this pith collapses. That cottony filling is another useful separator from true morels, whose stipes are cleanly hollow.

The flesh throughout is thin, whitish and brittle, and it does not change colour when cut or bruised. There is no latex and no distinctive strong odour.

Getting Spores

As an ascomycete, this fungus shoots its spores from sacs on the outer cap surface. To collect them, either set the whole fruit body upright under an inverted glass with a dark card behind it and wait a few hours, or lay a fresh cap on paper for an afternoon. A firm tap on a mature cap in dry weather will often release a visible puff of spores, which is diagnostic entertainment in itself. The deposit is pale cream to faintly yellowish.

Under the microscope the spores are large, smooth, hyaline and elliptic, roughly twenty to twenty-six by twelve to sixteen micrometres, and there are eight per sac. That eight-spored condition is worth noting because it is exactly what separates this species from its main relative.

Ecology

The Bell Morel behaves largely as a saprotroph in humus-rich calcareous soil, with some evidence of loose associations with the shrubs it grows beneath. It appears very early in the fungal year, exploiting the flush of moisture and warming soil before the canopy closes, and its short season and preference for disturbed hedge-bank soils mean it turns up in the same managed, semi-open habitats year after year, particularly where the ground is periodically opened by cutting or grazing.

Separating the Look-alikes

True morels, Morchella species. Cap fused to the stipe along its full length and covered in deep pits enclosed by sharp raised ridges. The vertical cut shows one continuous hollow. No free skirt.

Half-free Morel, Morchella semilibera. Cap ribbed and pitted, attached about halfway down so that only the lower half hangs free. Attachment level plus a ribbed surface distinguishes it.

Verpa bohemica. The closest relative. Its cap is markedly and deeply wrinkled in longitudinal folds, giving an almost brain-like or crumpled look rather than a smooth bell, and it is generally larger. Microscopically it is decisive: its sacs carry only two spores, and those spores are enormous, sixty micrometres and more in length. It also tends to fruit earlier and in damper ground under poplar and willow.

Gyromitra species. Cap deeply lobed and convoluted like a brain, seated low over a short chambered stipe, with no free thimble.

Helvella species. Saddle-shaped or lobed grey to whitish caps on strongly ribbed and furrowed stipes, and mostly later in the year.

Summary
