Big Red False Morel Identification Guide
How to work through a Big Red False Morel in spring bottomland forest: the brain-like reddish head, the fluted chambered stalk and the structural differences that separate it from true morels and other Gyromitra.
First impressions
You meet this species in spring, on the floor of a bottomland hardwood forest, usually within earshot of moving water. The soil is rich alluvium, the leaf litter is deep and damp, and there are sycamore, elm, cottonwood, oak and hickory overhead. Sitting on the litter is something large and reddish that looks less like a mushroom than like a wad of convoluted tissue, a brain or a compressed cauliflower, hoisted on a thick pale column.
Size is part of the first impression. The head commonly measures 8 to 20 cm across and exceptional specimens are larger still, making this one of the biggest members of its genus anywhere. The whole fruitbody can be a hand-span tall and feels light for its bulk because it is largely hollow.
Reading the head
Go slowly over the surface with a lens. The head is deeply and rather regularly convoluted into thin, sharp-edged ridges and deep furrows that run mostly in a radial direction from the apex, giving a folded, brain-like or gyrose texture. Crucially it is folded, not pitted: there are no discrete sunken pits bounded by a continuous network of ridges.
Colour ranges from dark reddish brown through brick and maroon to a dull rusty red, usually darkest along the crests of the folds and paler in the crevices. The surface is dry, matt to faintly waxy, and never viscid. The lower margin of the head tucks under and is fused irregularly to the stalk at several points rather than hanging free all the way round.
The fertile surface
This is an ascomycete, so there are no gills, no pores and no teeth. The spore-bearing layer is the exposed outer skin of the convoluted head. Under a lens it is smooth and even, and if you tap a ripe specimen sharply in still air you can sometimes see a faint puff of spores released as a visible cloud.
Because the fertile layer sits on the outside of the folds, the underside and the inner surfaces of the chambers are sterile, paler and slightly downy or granular.
Stalk, chambers and base
The stalk is stout, often nearly as massive as the head, 4 to 12 cm tall and 3 to 8 cm thick. It is white to pale pinkish buff, sometimes flushed brownish where soil has touched it, and its surface is fluted with longitudinal channels, ribs and folds.
The internal structure is a key character, so cut the whole fruitbody in half from top to bottom with a sharp knife. The stalk is not a simple empty tube. It is divided into several irregular chambers by cottony white partitions and infoldings, so a longitudinal section looks like a cut through a lung or a piece of coral. The head above it is likewise hollow but subdivided by the intruding folds, not open to a single cavity.
Flesh and colour change
The flesh of the head is thin, only a millimetre or three, brittle and slightly waxy, whitish to pale buff. The stalk flesh is white and a little more substantial. Nothing changes colour when you cut it: no blueing, no reddening, no blackening, no latex, no exudate of any kind. That stability is worth noting positively, because several unrelated spring ascomycetes do bruise or weep.
Taking a spore print
Ascomycetes shoot their spores rather than dropping them, which makes prints a little different from an agaric. Cut a slice of the fertile surface, or invert a small piece of the head, and lay it fertile side down on paper. Cover it with a bowl to keep air still and leave it for several hours. Because the deposit is pale, put half the material on white and half on black card so you can judge it either way.
The deposit is white to pale cream or faintly yellowish. Under the microscope the spores are large and ellipsoid, usually with a pair of prominent oil droplets, and they bear short, sharply pointed apiculi at each end. Those points are the classic microscopic confirmation for this species and separate it from several congeners with rounded or warted spore ends.
Substrate, season and range
The Big Red False Morel is a spring fungus of eastern and central North America, most frequent in the Ozarks, the mid-South, the Appalachian region and the Mississippi and Ohio drainages. Its season runs roughly from March to May, overlapping the morel season and often peaking a week or so on either side of it depending on latitude.
It is saprotrophic, associated with decaying hardwood, and although fruitbodies usually appear to be growing straight out of leaf litter they are typically attached to buried wood, root fragments or well-rotted debris. Look on floodplain terraces, streamside benches, old logging debris in bottomland woods and along woodland roads cut through alluvial soil. Fruitbodies are often solitary or in small scattered groups rather than dense troops.
Separating it from look-alikes
True morels (Morchella). The single most reliable difference is structural. A morel head is a honeycomb of distinct sunken pits enclosed by a continuous raised ridge network, not a mass of folds. Cut one lengthwise and the head and stalk form a single continuous hollow chamber with no partitions and no cottony infolding. A Big Red False Morel cut the same way shows convoluted, chambered interiors throughout.
Gyromitra brunnea, the elephant ear. Also large, also reddish brown, and it shares the pale chambered stalk. The difference is the shape of the head: brunnea is divided into two to four broad saddle-shaped or ear-like lobes with wavy free margins, and the surface between the lobes is comparatively smooth rather than finely and densely convoluted. Think broad lobes against a tight brain.
Gyromitra korfii and G. fastigiata. Smaller, with tan to yellowish brown or ochre heads that are lobed and coarsely wrinkled but never as deeply and finely gyrose, and the head colour lacks the strong red component.
Gyromitra esculenta. Much smaller, typically 4 to 10 cm, with a tightly and finely convoluted chestnut to dark reddish brown head and a comparatively slender pale stalk, and it favours sandy soil under conifers in cooler and more northern country.
Verpa bohemica. The head is a thimble, wrinkled longitudinally, attached only at the very apex of the stalk and hanging free like a skirt. The stalk is stuffed with cottony pith rather than chambered.
Disciotis and Gyromitra ancilis. Broad shallow cups or discs with a wrinkled inner face and no raised convoluted head on a distinct thick stalk.
