A tall, slender bolete with a dull brown cap, off-white pores and a long white stipe roughened by vertical rows of small dark scabers. It grows only with birch.

Overview

Birch Bolete (Leccinum scabrum) is the commonest of the scaber-stalks, a group defined by the tiny dark tufted scales, or scabers, that stud the stipe in rough vertical lines. That single feature identifies the genus Leccinum instantly and separates it from every other bolete lineage, where stipes are either smooth, glandular-dotted or covered in a raised network.

Leccinum species are strict habitat specialists, each tied to a narrow range of host trees, and L. scabrum is the birch specialist. Where birch grows, from lowland heath to subarctic scrub, this bolete tends to follow, and it is often the first larger mushroom a beginner learns to name with confidence because the tree association is so reliable.

In build it is noticeably more slender and long-legged than a cep, with a proportionally smaller cap on a tall tapering stipe. The whole fruiting body is softer-fleshed and rather more fragile, and older specimens become distinctly spongy and waterlogged, so the crispest field characters come from young to middle-aged material.

How to identify it

Cap

5-15 cm across, hemispherical then broadly convex, with a smooth or very finely downy dry surface that becomes slightly greasy in wet weather. Colour is a rather unexciting dull grey-brown, mid-brown, tan or occasionally almost beige, generally even across the cap. The cap cuticle usually reaches to the margin without an overhanging flap.

Pores

The tube layer is whitish to pale grey-buff, ageing dingy grey-brown or faintly ochre. Pore mouths are very small and round, and the surface is distinctly depressed around the stipe apex. Bruising produces at most a slow dull brownish or ochre discolouration; there is no strong blueing on the pore surface.

Stipe

The most diagnostic part: 7-20 cm tall and 1-3.5 cm thick, long and tapering upward from a broader base, whitish to pale grey and covered from top to bottom in small dark grey to blackish scabers arranged in rough vertical rows, giving a sandpapery texture. Scabers darken with age. There is no ring, no volva and no network.

Flesh & spore print

The flesh is white and rather soft, becoming spongy in mature specimens. On cutting it usually stays white or turns only faintly pinkish-grey; some collections show a weak blue-green tint in the extreme stipe base. The spore print is snuff-brown to ochre-brown.

Where and when it grows

Leccinum scabrum is ectomycorrhizal and, so far as is reliably known, exclusively partnered with birch (Betula). It appears on damp heathland, in birch woodland and scrub, along the birch fringes of mixed forest, in bogs and mires with scattered birch, and even under isolated planted birches in parks, gardens and along urban avenues. It tolerates a wide range of soils but is most abundant on damp, acidic ground with a moss or grass layer.

Fruiting runs from midsummer through to late autumn, often beginning earlier than the main bolete flush. The species is widespread and common throughout Europe including well into the subarctic, across northern Asia, and in northern North America, and it has been carried to the southern hemisphere alongside planted birches.

Ecological role

The species forms ectomycorrhizas on birch roots, sheathing the fine root tips and greatly extending the tree's effective absorbing surface for water, nitrogen and phosphorus. Its tight host specificity means it can be used as a practical indicator of birch presence even where the trees themselves are small, scattered or hidden in scrub. Birch is a pioneer tree of disturbed and nutrient-poor ground, and this fungus is an important part of what allows it to establish there.

Fruiting bodies are short-lived, softening and collapsing within a week or so, and they are colonised rapidly by fly larvae. As they decay they return nutrients directly to the surface litter under the host tree, and their spores are dispersed both by air currents beneath the cap and by the mammals and invertebrates that feed on the soft tissue.

Similar species

Orange Birch Bolete (Leccinum versipelle) shares the birch habitat and scabrous stipe but has a vivid orange to orange-ochre cap with an overhanging sterile flap of cuticle at the margin, and its cut flesh turns first pinkish-grey then dark greyish-black. Leccinum variicolor has a mottled grey-brown and whitish cap and shows a striking blue-green stain in the stipe base and often in the cut flesh. Leccinum holopus is a pale, almost white to greenish-white bog species of very wet birch carr.

Leccinum aurantiacum and L. albostipitatum are aspen and poplar specialists with brick-red to orange caps. King Bolete (Boletus edulis) can look similar in colour from above but has a much stouter swollen stipe bearing a fine raised white network rather than dark tufted scabers, and its tube layer ages olive-yellow rather than dingy grey.
