Birch Bolete Identification Guide
A practical route through Leccinum scabrum: a dull brown cap on a tall pale stipe roughened with dark scabers, standing in moss under birch, with whitish pores and an olive-brown spore print.
The setting and the first look
You are in damp birch woodland, a birch-fringed heath, or a mossy hollow along a track where a few birches lean over the path. It is anywhere from midsummer to the first hard frosts. What catches your eye is a single tall mushroom pushing up through Sphagnum or hair-moss, with a dull brown cap sitting like a bun on a conspicuously long, pale, tapering stem.
The overall proportions are the first useful signal. This is a leggy mushroom: the stipe is often longer than the cap is wide, sometimes twice as long, and it narrows steadily upwards so the whole thing looks slightly top-heavy. Before you touch it, check the trees. Every reliable record is under birch. If there is no Betula within reasonable rooting distance, stop and reconsider.
Reading the cap
The cap is 5 to 15 cm across, hemispherical at first and expanding to broadly convex, rarely flattening completely. Colour is unglamorous and variable within a narrow band: greyish brown, mouse brown, dull tan, sometimes a warm coffee shade, occasionally almost pale clay in dry seasons. It is never orange, never red, never distinctly yellow.
The surface is dry and finely felted when young, becoming smooth and slightly greasy in wet weather, and the margin often overhangs the pores by a millimetre or two in young specimens. Older caps develop shallow wrinkles or a faintly pitted texture. Press the cap between finger and thumb: the flesh is soft and yielding, and in waterlogged conditions it becomes noticeably spongy, which is one of the reasons old specimens sag so badly.
The pore surface
Turn it over. The tube layer is thick and easily separated from the cap flesh with a fingertip, as in most boletes. The pore mouths are small and round, whitish to pale grey when young, dulling to buff or dingy greyish ochre with age.
Press a pore surface firmly and wait. In typical Leccinum scabrum the bruise is faint: pale brownish or slightly ochre, developing slowly. There is no bright blue flash. That absence matters, because several bolete groups you might meet under the same trees stain blue within seconds. Note also that the tubes are depressed around the top of the stipe, leaving a shallow moat rather than running down onto it.
The stipe, and the character that names the genus
The stipe is 7 to 20 cm long, 1 to 3 cm thick, more or less cylindrical or thickening downwards, and whitish to pale grey. Now look closely at its surface with a lens. It is covered in small, raised, dark scales called scabers, arranged in more or less vertical rows or lines that give the stem a rasped, stubbly texture.
In this species the scabers start off dark greyish or blackish brown and stay dark, contrasting sharply against the pale ground colour. That contrast is the genus signature. Run a finger down the stipe with your eyes closed and you should feel the roughness. Any bolete with a smooth stipe, a fine raised net, or a ring is not a Leccinum.
Base, flesh and colour change on cutting
Ease the whole mushroom out of the moss rather than cutting it at ground level, so you can see the base. It is usually simply rounded or slightly swollen, with white mycelial threads binding soil and moss, and no bag-like volva or bulb.
Slice the mushroom in half from cap to base. The flesh is white, soft in the cap and fibrous in the stipe. In classic L. scabrum it barely changes, or drifts slowly to a pale greyish or faintly pinkish tone in the stipe over ten or fifteen minutes. What you should specifically check for is any blue-green flush at the extreme stipe base, because a clear blue-green reaction there points to a different species in the group. Record what you see and how long it took, since these reactions are slow and easy to miss if you only glance.
Taking and reading a spore print
Cut the cap free of the stipe and lay it pore-side down on white paper, cover it with a bowl to keep the humidity up, and leave it three to six hours. Fresh caps drop heavily.
The deposit is olive-brown to a warm snuff brown, the classic bolete print colour. Read it in daylight against white paper, and scrape the deposit into a small ridge with a blade to judge the colour properly, because a thin dusting always looks paler than it is. Under a microscope the spores are long and spindle-shaped, roughly 15 to 20 by 5 to 6 micrometres, smooth and pale ochre. A pinkish or flesh-coloured print rules the species out immediately and sends you toward Tylopilus.
Substrate, season and ecology
This is an ectomycorrhizal partner of birch and nothing else. Its mycelium sheathes the fine roots of Betula, trading mineral nutrients and water for tree sugars, which is why it appears in moss and litter rather than on wood, and why it turns up in the oddest places where a single birch has seeded itself, including gardens, verges, industrial ground and old spoil heaps.
Fruiting runs from June or July to November, peaking after warm autumn rain. Expect scattered singles or loose groups, not tight clusters, and expect them to be riddled with insect larvae within a few days of appearing, which is itself a small habitat clue: the flesh is soft and short-lived.
Separating it from look-alikes on morphology alone
Other Leccinum species are the main challenge, and cap colour plus stipe reaction does most of the work. Leccinum versipelle and L. aurantiacum have bright orange to brick-red caps and their cut flesh darkens dramatically through wine-grey to near black. L. variicolor has a mottled, streaky grey-brown cap and shows a distinct blue-green stain in the stipe base with pinkish tones in the cap flesh. L. holopus is a pale, almost white, slender species of wet Sphagnum bogs, often with a greenish tint at the base.
Outside the genus, the separation is easier. Imleria badia has a smooth, chestnut, slightly greasy cap and pores that flush blue-green when pressed, with no scabers at all. Tylopilus felleus has pink-tinged pores, a coarse dark net on the stipe and a flesh-pink print. Suillus species under birch-adjacent conifers have slimy caps, glandular dots or a ring, and never a scabrous stipe. Xerocomellus species are smaller, with cracked caps and a smooth or finely dotted stipe.
