A dull ochre-brown mushroom with a persistently inrolled, felty cap margin and decurrent gills that bruise dark brown and peel away from the cap flesh.

Overview

The Brown Roll-rim is one of the most abundant mycorrhizal mushrooms of birch woodland across the northern hemisphere, and it takes its name from its most reliable feature: a cap margin that stays tightly rolled under, felty and grooved, long after the rest of the cap has flattened into a shallow funnel.

Paxillus sits in the Boletales, the order that contains the boletes, despite having gills rather than pores. Several features betray this relationship — soft, easily separable gills that peel from the cap flesh in a sheet, gills that fork and anastomose near the stem, and a strong bruising reaction — and the genus is often described as a gilled bolete relative rather than a true agaric.

What is now called P. involutus has been shown to be a complex of several closely related species that differ in host and in subtle features of colour and stature, so the name is best treated as covering a group of near-identical brown roll-rims rather than a single sharply defined organism.

How to identify it

Cap

The cap is 4–15 cm across, convex at first, then flattening and finally becoming shallowly funnel-shaped with a depressed centre. It is dull ochre, olive-brown, yellow-brown or rusty-brown, dry and finely felty or downy when young, becoming smooth and slightly sticky in wet weather. The defining feature is the margin, which is strongly and persistently inrolled, thick, felty and often finely ribbed or grooved, remaining rolled even in mature specimens.

Gills

Gills are decurrent, running well down the stem, crowded, soft, and pale yellow to ochre-buff, darkening to olive-brown or rust-brown. Near the stem they fork repeatedly and interconnect with cross-veins, forming a pored or net-like pattern at the very top of the stem. Two behaviours are diagnostic: the whole gill layer can be scraped or peeled away from the cap flesh as a sheet, and any handling or bruising turns the gills dark reddish-brown to blackish-brown within minutes.

Stipe

The stem is 3–8 cm long and 1–2 cm thick, roughly equal or tapering downward, solid, and coloured like the cap or a little paler, staining brown where touched. It is smooth and dry, with no ring, no volva and no netting.

Flesh & spore print

Flesh is thick, soft, pale yellowish to buff, and stains brown on exposure. The spore print is yellow-brown, sienna or clay-brown — never white and never purple-brown — which together with the bruising reaction separates it immediately from most similar-looking funnel-capped mushrooms.

Where and when it grows

It is a mycorrhizal partner of broadleaved trees, above all birch, and secondarily willow, poplar, aspen, oak, beech, hazel and lime; some members of the complex associate with conifers such as spruce and pine. It fruits on soil, often in numbers, in birch woodland, on heaths, in parks and gardens with planted birch, on old industrial and reclaimed ground, and along woodland tracks.

The season is long, running from summer through to late autumn and lasting until hard frosts. It is extremely common and widely distributed across Europe, temperate Asia and North America, and has been introduced with planted trees to the southern hemisphere, including Australia and New Zealand, where it appears under exotic birches.

Ecological role

Paxillus involutus forms ectomycorrhizas, sheathing the fine root tips of its host tree in a fungal mantle and extending hyphae between the outer root cells. In exchange for sugars from the tree it supplies water, phosphorus and nitrogen drawn from a soil volume far larger than the roots alone could reach, and it is one of the standard model species used in laboratory studies of ectomycorrhizal physiology.

It is an early-successional and stress-tolerant partner, notable for colonising disturbed, nutrient-poor and metal-contaminated ground, which is why it is so frequent on old spoil heaps, quarry margins and reclaimed industrial land planted with birch. Research has shown the mycelium can also mobilise nitrogen from soil organic matter and even from dead invertebrates, giving it a role in nutrient cycling beyond simple nutrient exchange.

Similar species

Velvet Roll-rim (Tapinella atrotomentosa) is the most similar relative but grows on conifer stumps and wood rather than soil, and has a thick, dark brown, conspicuously velvety stem — an unmistakable difference from the smooth, pale stem of the Brown Roll-rim. Oyster Roll-rim (Tapinella panuoides) is stemless or nearly so, fan-shaped, and grows on conifer wood and timber.

Funnel caps (Clitocybe and Infundibulicybe species) share the decurrent gills and funnel shape but have white to cream spore prints, gills firmly attached to the cap flesh that cannot be peeled away as a sheet, no persistent inrolled felty margin, and no strong brown bruising. False Chanterelle (Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca) has bright orange, repeatedly forking gills and a white spore print. Among brown-spored mushrooms, Lactarius species in the same birch woodland exude milk from broken gills, which Paxillus never does.
