Brown Roll-rim Identification Guide
A field walkthrough for Paxillus involutus, from the inrolled felted margin and decurrent peelable gills to the instant brown bruising, with morphological separation from milkcaps and other funnel-shaped brown fungi.
The Setting and the First Glimpse
You meet this species most often on the disturbed ground where birch grows: heath edges, scrubby commons, park lawns with birch clumps, path sides, old spoil heaps and the mossy fringes of damp woodland. It also accompanies other broadleaves and, less often, conifers, and it tolerates acid, poor and compacted soils that many mushrooms decline. Fruitbodies appear from soil, sometimes among moss or in bare gritty earth, singly or in loose arcs and troops.
The first impression is of a broad, dull, ochre-brown mushroom with a strangely tucked-in edge, sitting low. Young ones look like buns with the rim rolled tightly under, as though someone had hemmed the cap. Old ones sprawl into shallow funnels 12 cm or more across, often with wavy, split margins and a sagging, blotched surface. The overall colour is unglamorous — rust, ochre, olive-brown, snuff — and after rain the cap has a distinctly greasy sheen that darkens it further.
Reading the Cap
Size runs 4 to 12 cm, sometimes 15. Shape moves through three stages that are worth learning: convex with a strongly inrolled margin, then flat with the margin still curved under, then depressed to broadly funnel-shaped with the margin finally unrolling and often becoming lobed or wavy. The inrolling is the character the common name records, and in young fruitbodies it is extreme — the rim can be curled a centimetre or more beneath the cap, forming a tight groove around the underside.
Run a fingertip along that rolled margin. It is finely downy, felted or minutely woolly, quite different from the smoother centre. In wet weather the cap centre becomes tacky and slightly slimy; dry, it is matt and finely felted, sometimes with faint radial streaks or a slightly cracked, scurfy zone near the middle. Older caps become blotched with darker rust-brown patches, especially where they have been touched or where rain has pooled.
The Gills and the Peel Test
Turn the fruitbody over and you will see the character that identifies the genus. The gills are decurrent, running well down onto the stipe, crowded, narrow, and pale ochre to yellowish-buff when young, deepening to a warmer clay-brown with age. Near the stipe apex they fork repeatedly and cross-connect, forming a network of anastomosing ridges and small pores rather than clean separate plates. Look at that junction under a lens: the pattern is unmistakable.
Now do the peel test. Place a thumb at the cap margin and push the gill layer sideways towards the stipe. In Paxillus the entire gill layer detaches from the cap flesh in a soft sheet, like wallpaper coming away from plaster, leaving a smooth pale surface behind. Gilled mushrooms in most other genera have gills that are continuous with the cap flesh and tear rather than lift. Combined with the decurrent, forking arrangement, this settles the genus in seconds.
Bruising and Colour Change
Press a gill firmly with a fingertip and count. Within thirty seconds to a minute a dark rust-brown or reddish-brown stain spreads from the pressure point, and it deepens over the next few minutes. Handled fruitbodies end up with brown fingerprints all over them, and the surface of any specimen carried in a collecting box will be blotched by the time you get it home for study. The cap surface bruises similarly, though more slowly and less obviously against its already brown ground.
Cut the fruitbody in half from cap to base. The flesh is thick above the stipe, soft, and pale yellowish-buff. On exposure it darkens gradually to brown, most visibly along the cut face and in the stipe. There is no latex — nothing milky, watery or coloured seeps from a cut gill, which is the key negative character against the milkcaps.
The Stipe and Base
The stipe is comparatively short and thick, 3 to 8 cm long and 1 to 2 cm wide, often shorter than the cap is wide, and it may be central or noticeably off-centre. It tapers slightly downward, is solid and firm, and is coloured like the cap or a little paler, becoming brown where handled. There is no ring, no ring zone, no veil, no volva and no dark velvety covering; the base is simple and tapered, sometimes with pale fibrils binding soil, and it may be slightly rooting.
Taking and Reading a Spore Print
Cut the cap free at the stipe apex and lay it gill-side down on white paper, covered by a bowl. Mature caps drop heavily and a good deposit usually appears within three to five hours; leave it overnight for younger material. Because the gills are decurrent, position the cap so that the gill layer sits flat on the paper rather than on the stipe stub.
The deposit is a warm sienna to clay-brown, sometimes described as snuff or yellow-brown, and it is easy to underestimate if the paper is cream. Check it on white and again on a dark surface. A white, cream, pink or rusty-orange deposit rules out this species; a purple-black or chocolate print points to an entirely different family.
Season, Substrate and Ecology
Paxillus involutus is mycorrhizal, forming root sheaths chiefly with birch and also with other broadleaves and some conifers. Its tolerance of disturbed, acid and impoverished soil makes it one of the commonest mushrooms of birch scrub and urban parkland. Fruiting runs from midsummer to the first hard frosts, peaking in early to mid-autumn, and troops often recur in the same spots annually. Because it accepts poor soils, it is frequently among the first larger fungi to appear on reclaimed ground and along newly cut path edges where birch has seeded in.
Separating It From Look-alikes
Milkcaps, Lactarius, are the usual confusion because several are brown with decurrent gills. Cut a gill: a milkcap bleeds latex, white or coloured, while Paxillus produces none. Milkcap flesh is also granular and snaps cleanly like chalk, whereas Paxillus flesh is fibrous and pliant, and milkcap gills cannot be peeled away as a sheet.
Tapinella atrotomentosa is a genuine relative with the same peelable, decurrent, forking gills, but it is a wood-dweller on conifer stumps and its stout, often eccentric stipe is covered in a dense dark brown to nearly black velvet. Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca has similar forking decurrent gills but they are bright orange, the flesh is thin and soft, the stipe slim, and the spore print white to cream. Clitocybe and Lepista species can be funnel-shaped with decurrent gills but their gills are not separable, they do not bruise rust-brown, and their prints are white, cream or pale pink. Phylloporus has a gilled look but its ridges are thick, distant and bolete-like with an olive-brown print and yellow tones throughout. Finally, any brown funnel-shaped fungus with true pores rather than gills is a bolete relative, not this.
