Cat Dapperling Identification Guide
A practical walkthrough for identifying *Lepiota felina*, the small conifer-litter dapperling with near-black concentric scales on a white cap and a dark-edged ring, and for separating it from the other small scaly Lepiotas.
The Setting and the First Impression
You are most likely to meet the Cat Dapperling in a conifer plantation or a stand of old spruce and pine, walking a needle-carpeted ride where the light is low and the ground layer is thin. It fruits singly or in small scattered groups directly out of the needle bed, sometimes along the mossy edge of a forest track, sometimes in dune pine woods on sandy soil.
The first impression is of a small, slim, white mushroom that has been dusted with soot. At two or three metres it reads as a dark disc on a pale cap, and up close the darkness resolves into distinct small scales arranged in rough concentric rings. It is a dapperling in every proportion: cap much wider than the stipe is thick, a slender straight stem, free gills, and a fragile little skirt partway up.
Reading the Cap
The cap is 2-4 cm across, occasionally 5 cm, convex at first and expanding to plano-convex, usually retaining a low broad umbo. The ground colour is whitish to cream. Over it lies the broken remains of a dark cuticle: small blackish-brown, sepia or almost coal-black squamules, densest and fused together at the centre so that the disc looks like an unbroken dark cap, and progressively sparser and smaller towards the margin, where the white ground shows clearly between them.
That gradient is worth studying with a lens. The scales are not raised pyramidal warts standing off the surface; they are appressed to slightly upturned flakes lying on the cap. The margin often carries a fine fringe of pale veil remnants, giving a slightly toothed outline in young specimens.
Because the dark centre and pale margin can be washed out on very old or rain-battered caps, always try to find one young specimen in the group.
Gills, Stipe and Base
The gills are free and clearly remote from the stipe, leaving a small collar-like gap; they are crowded, soft, moderately broad, and white to cream, ageing barely to a warmer cream. Under a lens the gill edge is minutely floccose or fringed rather than smooth. Numerous short intermediate gills fill the space towards the margin.
The stipe is 3-6 cm long and 3-6 mm thick, cylindrical and often slightly wider at the very base. Above the ring it is white, smooth, and often a little silky. Below the ring it is sheathed in fine dark brown fibrils that break up into irregular girdles or a faint zigzag pattern against a pale ground, echoing the cap scaling.
The ring itself repays close attention because it carries the best single character in the species. It sits high on the stipe, is thin and membranous, and is often fugacious, collapsing into a fibrillose zone in age. On good material its edge is bordered with dark brown to blackish flecks, and the underside may be finely dusted with the same dark material. A white cap-scaled dapperling with a dark-rimmed ring in a conifer needle bed is a strong combination.
The base is slightly swollen but never bulbous in the Amanita sense, and there is no sac, no volva and no marginate rim. White mycelial cords bind needles around it; teasing these out and lifting the whole base intact is worth the trouble because the absence of a volva is a key structural check.
Flesh, Colour Change and Odour
The flesh is thin, white and soft, and it does not change colour on cutting. Slice the cap and stipe lengthwise and leave the halves for ten minutes: there should be no reddening, no yellowing at the stipe base, and no bruising response on the gills beyond slight discolouration where handled.
The odour is faint and rather unpleasant, in the rubbery or slightly acrid direction, weaker than the sharp smell of its commonest relative. Crush a piece of the stipe base and smell it in cupped hands; a strong, penetrating, sharply pungent smell suggests a different species.
Taking a Spore Print
Remove the stipe flush with the gills, set the cap on white card or a slide, cover it with a beaker or an upturned cup, and leave it for four to eight hours in a still, cool place. Caps this size give a thin deposit, so combine two or three, and scrape the powder into a small heap with a blade before judging.
The print is white. Read it on both dark and light backgrounds to be sure that it is not faintly pink or ochre, since a pinkish print would move you into Entoloma territory and a rusty one into the small brown-spored genera.
Under the microscope the confirmation is straightforward and diagnostic to species group. The spores are small, roughly 6-8 by 3-4 micrometres, and in profile they are shaped like a bullet or spur, with a projecting angle at the base. They stain red-brown in Melzer's iodine, that is they are dextrinoid, which is a genus-level marker for Lepiota. Cheilocystidia on the gill edge are clavate. The cap covering is built of chains of elongated elements rather than a simple layer of round cells.
Habitat and Season
This is a litter saprotroph of coniferous woodland: spruce, pine and fir plantations, natural conifer stands, and pine on dunes and heathy sand. It occurs on the needle mat itself and among moss at the base of trunks, and it seems to like ground that is undisturbed and a little shaded.
The season is late summer through late autumn, with the bulk of records from September to November, and it can persist into early winter in mild oceanic weather. It is widespread in Europe and reported from northern North America in comparable conifer forest.
Separating the Look-alikes on Morphology
Lepiota cristata is the species most collections get called. It shares the size, the free white gills and the white print, but its cap scales are rust-brown to reddish-brown rather than blackish, it usually grows in deciduous woodland, gardens, verges and grassy path edges rather than conifer needle beds, its smell is markedly stronger and sharper, and its ring is a plain white evanescent band without a dark border.
Lepiota castanea has chestnut to warm brown granular scaling, a stipe with clearly banded darker girdles, and distinctly longer, more cylindrical spores.
Lepiota clypeolaria is larger and looser-textured, with pale yellow-brown fibrillose scales, a shaggy woolly stipe that grades into an ill-defined ring zone, and long spindle-shaped spores.
Echinoderma asperum can occur in the same woods but is far bigger, 5-12 cm across, and its cap carries erect pointed pyramidal warts rather than flat scales, with a gill edge that appears roughened.
Cystolepiota species are smaller and powdery-mealy rather than scaly, sometimes with lilac or pink tints.
The parasol-type genera, Macrolepiota and Chlorophyllum, are separated on scale by an order of magnitude, plus a movable double ring and a patterned stipe.
Finally, small white-gilled Amanita species share the free gills and white print, so always check the base: an Amanita has universal veil remains as a sac, a rim or patches, and its spores are not dextrinoid.
