Chestnut Bolete Identification Guide

How to work through Gyroporus castaneus in the field: a small suede-brown cap, white pores, brittle flesh, a hollow chambered stem and the pale yellow spore print that sets the genus apart.

The First Impression

You are on a warm, dry bank under oaks in late summer, on sandy or gravelly soil, and there is a modest little bolete sitting in the litter. It is not showy. The cap is a flat, matte, uniform chestnut or cinnamon-brown, the size of a plum to a small apple, and the stem below it is the same warm brown and looks slightly too slender for the cap. Everything about it reads as neat and dry rather than fat and greasy. The temptation is to write it off as one of the small brown boletes and move on, but two quick tests — splitting the stem and taking a print — turn it into one of the easiest boletes to name with confidence.

Reading the Cap

Size and shape. Usually 3 to 8 cm across, occasionally up to 10. Hemispherical and tightly convex when young, expanding to broadly convex and finally almost flat, sometimes with a slightly uneven or shallowly dented surface in age.

Colour. Uniform chestnut-brown, rusty tan, cinnamon or reddish-brown, evenly coloured across the whole cap rather than mottled or zoned. Old specimens fade towards ochre-tan, and there is often a slightly paler, thin band right at the rim.

Surface. Dry, matte and finely velvety, like fine suede or chamois, never viscid or sticky even in wet weather. Under a hand lens the surface looks minutely felted. In dry spells the cuticle may crack into small patches near the centre.

Margin. Inrolled at first and slightly overhanging the pores; expanding and often becoming a little wavy. It stays even, not grooved.

The Pore Surface

Turn the cap over. The tube layer is shallow, and the pores are small, round and quite tightly packed — several to the millimetre — giving the underside a fine, even texture rather than the wide angular mesh of many boletes.

Colour. White or ivory in young specimens, ageing to cream and then a pale straw-yellow. They never run to olive, mustard, orange or red.

Attachment. The tubes are adnate to nearly free and, importantly, are depressed in a shallow moat around the top of the stem, so that the pore surface curves away from the stem instead of running down it.

Bruising. Press the pores firmly with a thumb and wait a minute or two. In this species they do not turn blue. At most they take on a faint brownish or pale ochre stain where handled, and often nothing changes at all. Any flash of blue means you are looking at a different fungus.

The Stipe and Base — The Decisive Test

The stem is 3 to 8 cm long and 1 to 2 cm thick, more or less equal or slightly swollen in the middle, coloured like the cap or a shade paler, and finely felted in the same way. There is no ring, no net or reticulation, no scabers and no glandular dotting — the surface is essentially plain.

Now split it lengthwise with a knife. This is the character that identifies the genus. Young stems are stuffed with soft white pith; as they mature that pith breaks down into irregular hollow chambers, and mature stems are largely hollow with ragged internal partitions. The stem also snaps in a distinctive way: it is brittle and breaks with a clean crack rather than tearing into fibres. A chambered, brittle, hollow stem under a brown cap with white pores is Gyroporus.

The base is simply the tapered or bluntly rounded end of the stem, with white basal mycelium and no bulb, sac or rooting extension.

Flesh and Colour Change

Cut the cap and stem in vertical section and watch. The flesh is white, soft and brittle rather than elastic, and in Gyroporus castaneus it stays white: there is no blueing, no reddening and no more than a very slow, faint buff or brownish discolouration in the stem base of old material. Give it a full five minutes before concluding anything, because blueing in related species can take thirty seconds to appear. The odour is mild and unremarkable.

Taking a Spore Print

This is the second decisive test, and it is worth the wait. Cut the stem off flush, set the cap pore-side down on white paper, cover with a bowl, and leave it for four to eight hours or overnight.

The deposit is a pale, clean straw-yellow — sometimes described as pale lemon or buff-yellow. That is genuinely unusual: the great majority of boletes drop olive-brown, cinnamon-brown or vinaceous prints, so a distinctly yellow print immediately narrows the field to a handful of genera. Under the microscope the spores are smooth, thin-walled and ellipsoid, roughly 8 to 12 by 5 to 6 micrometres, pale yellowish individually.

Substrate and Season

Gyroporus castaneus is ectomycorrhizal and partners chiefly with oaks, and also with beech, chestnut and other broadleaves. It has a strong preference for light, well-drained ground: sandy banks, path edges, thin soil over gravel, and open woodland rather than deep damp humus. It fruits from midsummer into autumn, usually scattered or in small loose groups rather than large troops, and it can be locally frequent in a good year and absent for several seasons after.

Separating It From Look-Alikes on Morphology Alone

Gyroporus cyanescens. The same brittle, hollow-chambered stem, so the genus test does not separate them, but everything else does. Its cap is straw, buff or pale ochre rather than chestnut, its surface is coarsely fibrillose or roughened rather than smooth suede, and the flesh turns an intense deep blue within seconds of being cut. Colour of cap plus instant blueing versus unchanging white flesh is a clean split.

Gyroporus purpurinus. Cap and stem a deep wine-purple to purple-red rather than chestnut, otherwise similar in build and in yellow spore print.

Xerocomellus and Hortiboletus species. Small brown-capped boletes that share the habitat. Their pores are yellow from the start and usually distinctly angular and wide, their stems are solid and often fibrillose or streaked red, most bruise blue somewhere, and all drop an olive-brown print.

Tylopilus species. Sizeable brown-capped boletes, but their pores turn pink to flesh-coloured with age and their print is pinkish- to vinaceous-brown. The stem is solid.

Boletus and Suillellus relatives. Much stouter, with solid stems that are usually reticulated or otherwise ornamented, olive-brown prints, and often strong colour changes.

Suillus species. Viscid caps, glandular dots or a veil, association with conifers, and cinnamon to olive-brown prints.

A Field Sequence That Works

  1. Note the habitat: dry, sandy or gravelly ground under oak or other broadleaves.
  2. Confirm a dry, matte, evenly chestnut-brown cap with a suede texture.
  3. Check the pores: small, round, white to pale straw, depressed at the stem, not blueing.
  4. Split the stem lengthwise and confirm brittle, hollow, chambered pith.
  5. Cut the flesh and watch five minutes for any colour change. There should be none.
  6. Take a print and confirm pale yellow, not olive-brown.
