Chestnut Dapperling Identification Guide
A step-by-step reading of Lepiota castanea, the small chestnut-scaled dapperling of rich woodland humus, covering its free white gills, sheathed scaly stipe, white spore print and the fine characters that divide it from the other small brown-scaled Lepiota species.
The First Impression and Where You Meet It
Chestnut Dapperling is a small, slim, tidy-looking mushroom that turns up in the shaded, enriched corners of woodland: the sides of paths, the base of a hedge bank, nettle beds under mature trees, the humus-rich ground of parkland and gardens, and increasingly on old woodchip mulch. The soil is typically deep in leaf litter, often over chalk or another base-rich substrate. Beech, oak and hazel are frequent overhead.
The impression is of a miniature parasol: a slender stipe, a cap that opens to a low broad umbo, and a coat of warm reddish-brown scaling that stands out sharply against a pale ground colour. It is rarely gregarious in numbers; you usually find one, or a small scattered handful within a few metres.
Because several small brown-scaled dapperlings overlap in habitat and stature, this is a species where you should collect a range of ages, dig the base intact, and work through the characters methodically rather than calling it from a photograph.
Reading the Cap
Caps are small, roughly two to five centimetres across. Young ones are ovoid to bell-shaped, then convex, and finally flattened with a persistent low, broad umbo.
The surface begins as a continuous chestnut, reddish-brown or rust-brown skin. As the cap expands that skin cannot keep up and tears into fine granular to fibrillose scales, leaving a pale cream, buff or ochre ground exposed between them. The scaling is characteristically arranged in more or less concentric rings that become sparser towards the margin, while the umbo stays unbroken and forms a solid darker disc at the centre. The margin often shows fine radial fibrils and, on very fresh material, a few minute white veil fragments.
The scales are appressed and granular, not coarse pyramidal warts and not shaggy upturned flakes; rub one gently and it smears rather than lifting off as a plate.
Gills, the Collarium and the Free Attachment
Turn the cap over. The gills are free: they stop short of the stipe, leaving a narrow clear channel all the way round, and in many specimens a fine collar-like ridge, the collarium, runs around the stipe apex where they end. Confirm this by slicing the mushroom vertically rather than by squinting at the underside.
They are crowded, narrow, soft and white to cream, sometimes ageing to a dull pale ochre or acquiring faint rusty spots at the edge on old specimens. They never turn pink and never turn brown with spore load - the colour stays pale, which is exactly what a white-spored genus should do. Under a lens the gill edge is finely fringed.
Stipe, Veil and Base
The stipe is two to five centimetres long and three to six millimetres thick, cylindrical, hollow or at least stuffed and soon hollow, and slightly enlarged at the very base without forming a marginate bulb. There is no volva and no sac.
The veil is the diagnostic part. Above the veil line the stipe is smooth, pale cream to whitish, and often faintly silky. Below it, the stipe is sheathed in the same chestnut-brown fibrillose scaling as the cap, frequently arranged in a girdle or two, so the lower stipe looks socked or belted in rust-brown. The ring itself is evanescent: rather than a persistent skirt, it is an oblique fibrillose zone or a slight flaring edge to the sheath, and on mature material it may be barely traceable. Always check young specimens for it.
Excavate the base carefully. It usually sits in a small mat of white mycelium binding leaf fragments and humus, which confirms a soil-and-litter saprotroph rather than a wood dweller.
Interior and Colour Change
Split a fruit body from cap centre to stipe base. The tissue is thin and white in the cap, whitish in the stipe apex, and often browner in the lower stipe and base. On exposure, cut surfaces of the stipe base commonly discolour slowly to pinkish-buff, reddish-brown or vinaceous over several minutes to an hour - a slow, quiet change rather than an instant one, but worth timing.
The odour is faint and slightly rubbery or acrid, sometimes described as fruity in fresh material. Critically, it is not the strong, penetrating gas-tar or coal-gas smell of Lepiota cristata, and holding a crushed cap of each side by side is the fastest way to learn the difference.
Taking a Spore Print
Cut the stipe flush with the gills and set the cap gill-side down on half-white, half-black card, covered, for four to eight hours. Small caps with thin tissue dry out fast, so add a damp tissue under the cover.
The deposit is white to very pale cream, and it shows only against the black half.
If you have a microscope, this is where the species group is nailed down. Lepiota castanea and its allies have spurred spores: elongate, roughly bullet- or projectile-shaped, with a distinct pointed spur or projection at one end. Seeing that shape immediately separates the group from the plain ellipsoid-spored dapperlings, whatever the field characters suggest.
Substrate and Season
The fungus is saprotrophic on rich humus, deep leaf litter and decaying plant debris. Look in broadleaved woodland, especially on calcareous soils, along shaded path edges, hedge banks, in parks, gardens, shrubberies and on well-rotted woodchip.
The season is late summer to late autumn, extending into early winter in mild spells. Fruit bodies come singly or in small scattered groups, and a productive patch of humus can produce for several years running.
Separating the Look-alikes on Morphology
Lepiota cristata is the constant confusion. It is a little smaller, its ground colour is whiter and cleaner, its reddish-brown scales are sparser and more sharply defined in concentric rings on a shining white cap, it has a more persistent small ring, and it carries a strong, penetrating rubbery gas smell. Its spores are also spurred, so smell, ground colour and ring persistence are the working characters.
Lepiota felina has blackish-brown to dark sepia scales on a white ground, a distinct persistent ring, and grows chiefly in conifer litter.
Lepiota subincarnata and L. brunneoincarnata are stouter, their cap scaling is pinkish-brown to greyish-brown rather than bright chestnut, the stipe below the ring zone is more diffusely fibrillose than sharply girdled, they favour grassy and disturbed places, and their spores are plain ellipsoid without a spur.
Lepiota ignivolvata is considerably larger, with a distinctive orange-ochre ring set low on the stipe.
Echinoderma asperum is far bigger and carries coarse, dark, pointed pyramidal warts rather than fine granular scaling.
Cystolepiota species are tiny and clothed in a powdery, mealy bloom rather than fibrillose scales.
Young Macrolepiota and Chlorophyllum species are separated by size, by a thick double-edged movable ring, and often by a green or brown spore deposit in the latter.
