Cinnabar Chanterelle Identification Guide

Field notes on Cantharellus cinnabarinus, the small pinkish-red chanterelle of hardwood forests, focusing on its blunt forking false gills, solid tapering stipe and unusual pinkish spore deposit, and how to sort it from the waxcaps it grows beside.

The First Impression and the Ground

Cinnabar Chanterelles read as small red sparks in brown leaf litter. The classic setting is an oak-dominated hardwood forest in summer, a few days after heavy rain, on a slope or a low bank where the litter is thin and the soil is firm and often a little clayey. Path edges, cut banks and the ground beneath scattered mosses are all productive. They come scattered or in loose troops, and a good year can string dozens of them along one contour of a hillside.

The first impression is of colour and construction together. The colour is a clear pinkish-red - cinnabar, coral, vermilion - quite different from the orange of a jack-o'-lantern or the yellow of a common Chanterelle. The construction is the chanterelle build: everything is one continuous piece of fibrous tissue, cap flowing into folds flowing into a tapering stipe, with no joint anywhere.

Reading the Cap

Caps are small, generally one to four centimetres across, occasionally five. They start convex, flatten, and then become shallowly depressed and finally funnel-shaped, so an established troop shows the whole series. The margin is wavy and lobed, frequently incurved when young and often splitting radially in dry weather.

The surface is dry and matt, smooth to very faintly felted, never sticky. Fresh caps are a saturated pinkish-red; sun and age bleach them steadily through orange-pink to a washed-out salmon, so faded specimens are much less striking and are worth checking underneath before dismissing.

There is no separable cuticle. Try to peel the margin and you simply tear the cap.

The Underside: False Gills Again

The spore-bearing surface is made of false gills, and reading them correctly is the whole identification. They are blunt, thickened folds with rounded edges, not thin blades. They fork repeatedly, are joined by cross-veins into a shallow net, and run decurrent down the stipe before fading out rather than stopping at a line.

Colour is the same red as the cap or a shade paler and pinker, and old folds pale towards pinkish-buff.

Do the thumbnail test. Push sideways: true gills detach in flakes or sheets; these folds are cap tissue and tear only with the cap. That single test eliminates the entire waxcap group, which is where most misidentifications of small red mushrooms end up.

Stipe, Base and Interior

The stipe is one to four centimetres long, three to eight millimetres thick, solid throughout - never hollow - and it tapers downward so the whole mushroom is top-heavy in outline. It is smooth, concolorous with the cap or slightly paler, and it carries no ring, no cortina, no volva and no scaling. The base is often bound into soil and litter by whitish mycelial threads.

Split one lengthways. The interior is whitish to very pale pinkish, dense and fibrous, and it tears in strands rather than snapping - the same behaviour as the golden Chanterelle. There is no latex and no bruising reaction: the cut surface stays as it is, with at most a faint dulling over an hour. The odour is mild and faintly fruity, never mealy and never sharp.

Taking a Spore Print

Because the fertile folds run onto the stipe, cut the stipe about a centimetre below where the ridges fade out, then stand the cap fold-side down on half-white, half-black card, cover it, and leave it several hours or overnight. Small caps dry out quickly, so add a damp tissue under the cover.

The deposit is the character that most people never check and that settles the identification: pale pinkish-cream to salmon-buff, not white. Look at it in good daylight against the black half of the card, then smear it with a fingertip on the white half to judge the tint. Waxcaps of the same colour and size give a clean white deposit; a pinkish deposit combined with false gills is decisive.

Substrate and Season

Cinnabar Chanterelle is mycorrhizal, so it grows from soil, moss or litter and never from wood, woodchip or a rotting stump. Its partners are hardwoods, with oaks foremost and beech and other broadleaves also recorded. It is a species of eastern North American hardwood forest in particular, common in mixed oak woods on well-drained slopes.

The season is summer into early autumn, keyed tightly to rainfall - troops appear a few days after a soaking and can persist for a week or more, because the tissue is tough and slow to decay. Established patches reappear in the same places year after year, as you would expect from a root symbiont.

Separating the Look-alikes on Morphology

Waxcaps (Hygrocybe species such as H. cantharellus and H. miniata) are the main confusion, being small, red and often growing nearby. They have true gills: thin, blade-like, waxy, comparatively well spaced, with sharp edges, and they detach cleanly from the cap. Their caps are often minutely scurfy or scaly, their tissue is soft and brittle rather than fibrous and stringy, their stipes are frequently hollow, and the spore deposit is white.

Cantharellus friesii is the European counterpart: a small chanterelle with an orange to orange-red downy cap and a distinctly paler, more yellow-orange fertile surface, giving a two-tone look that C. cinnabarinus does not have.

Cantharellus appalachiensis shares the habitat but has a brownish to yellow-brown cap with a darker centre, yellow tissue, and pinkish-grey folds.

Craterellus ignicolor and Cantharellus lutescens are orange-yellow rather than pink-red, with hollow stipes and very shallow, sparse, blunt veining.

Golden Chanterelle (C. cibarius) is larger, egg-yellow, and gives a pale yellow print.

Small red Marasmius, Mycena and Rickenella species all have thin true gills, wiry stipes and white prints, and their tissue is soft rather than fibrous.

Working Checklist

How do I separate Cinnabar Chanterelle from a small red waxcap?
Check the underside and then print it. This species has blunt, forked, cross-veined folds that are part of the cap and will not lift off with a thumbnail, plus a solid fibrous stipe and stringy tissue. Waxcaps have thin, waxy, separable true gills, a softer brittle build, often a hollow stipe, and a pure white spore deposit.
What colour is the spore print?
Pale pinkish-cream to salmon-buff, which is unusual and very useful. Cut the stipe about a centimetre below where the folds fade, stand the cap fold-side down on half-white, half-black card under cover for several hours, and judge the tint on the white half.
