Club Foot Identification Guide

The Setting and the First Look

Club Foot is an autumn mushroom of conifer plantations and beech woods, and the encounter usually happens on soft ground in deep needle litter or leaf mould, in shade, often along the edge of a ride or on a mossy bank. Individually the fruit bodies are unassuming: medium-sized, dark greyish-brown caps sitting low over the litter, singly or in loose scattered groups rather than in tight rings. What pulls them out of the background is the silhouette. Seen from ground level the cap is broadly flattened or shallowly dished and the stipe visibly widens downwards into a fat, tapering club that flares where it meets the litter. That top-heavy profile, wider at the base than at the top, is the first real clue, and it is worth crouching to see it.

The second clue arrives when you pick one. The base feels soft, spongy and waterlogged, not firm or woody, and it compresses under finger pressure like a wet sponge. A mushroom stipe of this size that squashes at the base rather than snapping is unusual and narrows the field immediately.

Reading the Cap

Caps measure 4-10 cm across, occasionally a little more. Young caps are convex with the margin curved down and slightly inrolled; with age they flatten and then depress in the centre to form a shallow funnel, and many mature specimens keep a low, blunt umbo in the middle of the depression, so the profile is a dish with a small pimple in it. The margin is thin, often slightly wavy in age, and only faintly striate when very wet.

Colour is grey-brown to smoky umber, distinctly darker in the centre and fading outwards to a paler greyish-buff at the rim. The surface is smooth and bald, very slightly greasy in wet weather and matt when dry, sometimes with a faint silky radial sheen in raking light. The cap flesh is thin except at the very centre, whitish, and soft rather than firm.

Reading the Gills

Turn the cap over and the identification gets decisive. The gills are white to cream, sometimes ageing to a dull yellowish-cream, and they are strongly and deeply decurrent, running a long way down the stipe as clear raised lines and often reaching a third or more of the way to the base. They are moderately spaced rather than crowded, quite soft and easily damaged, and they are broad in relation to the thin cap flesh, so the gill layer looks disproportionately deep compared with the cap that carries it.

Run a fingernail across them: they bruise and tear rather than staying rigid. There is no ring, no cortina and no veil remnant anywhere on the gill edge or the cap margin.

Reading the Stipe and the Base

The stipe is 4-8 cm long, roughly 0.6-1.5 cm at the apex and expanding steadily downward to 2-3 cm at the base, forming a distinct club, sometimes almost bulbous and sometimes tapering again abruptly at the point of attachment. Colour is grey-brown, paler than the cap and often whitish-fibrillose towards the top; the surface is finely fibrous and slightly felted. At the very base there is usually a mat of white mycelium binding needles and leaf fragments.

Split it lengthwise. The apex is fibrous and whitish; the swollen part is soft, spongy and conspicuously water-soaked, with grey-brown watery flesh that darkens where cut simply through wetting rather than through a true chemical reaction. This spongy waterlogged interior gives the species its name and is worth demonstrating on every specimen. No latex flows, and no blue, red or black staining develops as the cut surface stands.

Odour

Crush the cap flesh and smell it. Club Foot has a distinctly sweet, aromatic, slightly fruity odour that most people find quite pronounced, sometimes compared to marzipan or to a sweet perfumed note. It is very different from the mealy, farinaceous smell of many pale-gilled woodland species, and combined with the swollen spongy base it is one of the more reliable field characters.

Taking a Spore Print

Cut the cap from the stipe and set it gills down on paper, half on black and half on white, under a cover, for four to six hours. The print is white, sometimes with the barest cream tinge in a very thick deposit, and it is that pale colour which anchors the identification against several brown-spored and pink-spored genera with similar shapes. A white deposit on white paper is easy to overlook, so check the black half first, then confirm the absence of any brown or pink cast by scraping the deposit into a small heap. Under a microscope the spores are small, smooth, colourless and broadly tear-drop to ellipsoid.

Substrate, Season and Habitat

This is a litter decomposer, associated most strongly with conifers - pine and spruce especially - and also occurring under beech and in mixed woodland. It fruits from late summer into late autumn, peaking in October and November in temperate regions, and it favours acidic, well-drained ground with a good depth of needle litter and moss. Look on the litter surface itself; the fungus does not fruit on stumps or logs, and it does not appear in open grassland. Fruiting is usually scattered or in small loose groups, occasionally forming a very diffuse arc, but it does not build the dense troops of some relatives.

Separating It from Look-alikes

Clouded Funnel, Clitocybe nebularis. Bigger and paler, with a clouded, floury-bloomed grey cap, crowded narrow gills that are only shortly decurrent, a cream rather than white spore print, and a heavy sweetish-mealy odour of a different character. Its base is clubbed but firm rather than spongy and waterlogged, and it fruits in large troops and rings rather than scattered.

Common Funnel, Infundibulicybe gibba. A cleaner true funnel, with a pinkish-buff to tan cap, thin flesh, crowded strongly decurrent white gills, and, critically, a slender straight stipe of even width that is not clubbed. It is a summer to autumn species of leaf litter with an entirely different silhouette.

The Goblet, Pseudoclitocybe cyathiformis. Deeply funnel-shaped from an early stage, dark grey-brown throughout including the gills, which are greyish rather than white, with a stipe that is longitudinally fibrous-netted and tapers slightly downward, and a late, often winter, season.

Tawny Funnel, Paralepista flaccida. Warm orange-tan to foxy brown, more strongly funnel-shaped, with densely crowded decurrent gills, a cream print, and a habit of fruiting in dense clustered troops in litter on a slender base.

False Chanterelle, Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca. Orange throughout with forked, blunt-edged, thick decurrent gills, a much more slender stipe, and a preference for very rotten conifer wood and woody debris as much as litter.

Dark western relatives such as Ampulloclitocybe avellaneialba. Same genus and the same deeply decurrent white gills, but with a much darker, browner, often fibrillose-streaked cap, generally larger stature, an association with rotting conifer wood and debris rather than plain needle litter, and a base that is far less markedly clubbed.
