Common Brown Cup Identification Guide

How to work through Peziza phyllogena in the field: the olive-brown saucer on bare spring ground, the scurfy pale outer wall, and where the honest limits of macroscopic identification lie.

The Encounter

Spring, damp ground, and a patch of disturbed soil. The Common Brown Cup is a fungus of edges and interruptions: the scraped margin of a woodland track, the crumbling soil beside an uprooted tree, a bed of decaying wood chip, the bare earth under mixed hardwoods where the litter has been thinned. You rarely find one alone. The usual sight is a loose group of brown saucers, some still deeply cupped, some already flattened and buckled, sitting directly on the soil surface with no obvious stalk and no obvious connection to anything.

The first impression that matters is texture rather than colour. Cup fungi in the genus Peziza look like thin, brittle rubber discs, and the way one behaves when you press it with a fingertip — flexing slightly, then cracking cleanly — is quite unlike the fibrous flesh of a gilled mushroom. Get down to ground level to see the profile, because the shape of the cup in side view is one of the most informative characters you will get.

Reading the Inner Surface

The inner face of the cup is the fertile surface, the hymenium, and its colour is what the species is usually named on. In Peziza phyllogena it is a medium to dark brown with a distinct olive or drab cast, sometimes described as coffee-brown with a greenish undertone. It is smooth, matt to faintly waxy, and in old expanded specimens it becomes uneven, wrinkled toward the centre and buckled at the edges.

Size runs from about 3 cm to 8 cm across, occasionally up to 10 cm. Young cups are deep and bowl-shaped with the margin turned inward. As they mature they open out into shallow saucers, and the largest ones flatten to the point that the rim splits into several radial tears and the whole fruitbody sags into a wavy plate. Because the shape changes so much with age, always assess several specimens in a group rather than judging from one.

The Outer Surface and Margin

Turn a cup over — a knife blade slid flat under the base is the tidiest way. The outer, sterile surface is markedly paler than the inside: a light brown, tan or buff, sometimes with a slightly purplish or greyish note. More importantly, it is not smooth. Under a hand lens it is finely granular, mealy or scurfy, covered with tiny raised particles that give it a faintly bran-dusted look. That furfuraceous outer wall is a useful character and separates the species from cups with a smooth, glossy or bloomed exterior.

The margin is usually entire and slightly incurved when young, becoming irregular and torn with age. It is not conspicuously fringed, hairy, or lined with a paler band, and there are no eyelash-like bristles anywhere on the fruitbody.

Is There a Stalk?

In practice, no. The cup is sessile or has at most a very short, thick, contracted base which is often buried in soil and litter and is easily left behind if you pull rather than dig. This matters, because several genera that look superficially similar do have a real stalk or a stalk-like column, and if you tear a specimen out you have thrown away the evidence. Excavate a whole fruitbody with a knife, take the top centimetre of substrate with it, and clean it afterwards.

Flesh in Section

Cut a cup in half from rim to base. The flesh is thin, typically only 1 to 3 mm, brittle, and brownish to pale watery brown, often faintly layered so you can see a slightly darker fertile band on the inner side. It breaks with a clean snap rather than tearing.

Watch the cut edge for thirty seconds. In this species nothing happens: no milky exudate, no yellowing, no reddening. That negative result is genuinely informative, because several related cups release a watery or milk-coloured juice from cut flesh, and one common relative stains yellow within a minute.

The odour is faint and earthy, essentially the smell of the damp soil the cup grew on.

Spores and How to Collect Them

Cup fungi are ascomycetes, and they shoot their spores upward and outward from the inner surface rather than dropping them from gills. There are two ways to sample them.

The theatrical method: bring a fresh, mature cup indoors, let it warm slightly, then breathe gently across the open face or tap the rim. A visible puff of pale smoke will often rise from the surface as thousands of asci fire at once. Hold a dark card just above it to catch the cloud.

The practical method: rest the cup face-down over a glass slide or a sheet of white paper for an hour or two under a cover. The deposit is whitish to very pale cream and is easiest to see against a dark background.

Be honest about what this gives you. The deposit colour is nearly identical across the brown Peziza species, and the character that actually separates them is the surface ornamentation of the individual spores under a microscope: Peziza phyllogena has ellipsoid spores decorated with fine warts that tend to link into a low irregular network. Without a microscope, a field determination rests on the combination of habitat, season, olive-brown hymenium and scurfy pale exterior, and it should be recorded as such.

Substrate and Season

This is a soil fungus and a decomposer. It fruits on humus-rich or disturbed ground under both hardwoods and conifers, on woody debris worked into the soil, on old wood chip and sawdust beds, along path cuttings, and on the churned earth around root plates. It benefits from ground that has been recently opened up, which is why it appears so often in gardens, landscaped beds and forestry tracks.

The season is the other half of the identification. It is a spring to early summer species, appearing alongside the earliest spring ascomycetes and disappearing by midsummer in most regions. A large olive-brown cup on soil in spring and a large brown cup on sand in September are unlikely to be the same organism, and season alone narrows the field considerably.

Sorting Out the Look-alikes

Bay Cup (Peziza badia) is the classic confusion. It is a deeper, more reddish or blackish brown inside with its own olive tinge, tends to keep a more strongly cupped shape, favours sandy or clay banks, and fruits mainly from late summer into autumn. The overlap is real, and the reliable separation is microscopic: Peziza badia has spores ornamented with prominent ridges forming a coarse network, versus the finer warty ornament of Peziza phyllogena. Season and substrate are your best macroscopic guides.

Palomino Cup (Peziza repanda) is paler, a milky tan to light brown, with a whitish smooth outer surface and a margin that flares outward and splits dramatically. It grows on wood and stumps rather than soil.

Blistered Cup (Peziza vesiculosa) is pale ochre-buff, keeps a strongly inrolled margin even when large, and has a distinctly blistered, bubbled inner surface. It grows on straw, manured beds and rich compost, not woodland soil.

Peziza succosa looks similar in colour but the cut flesh releases a juice that turns bright yellow within a minute — a colour change Peziza phyllogena never shows.

Gyromitra ancilis (Discina perlata) overlaps in spring and in colour, but it has a thick ribbed stalk-like base and a strongly wrinkled, uneven inner surface rather than a smooth saucer.

Otidea species are split down one side into an ear or rabbit-ear shape, never a symmetrical circle.

A Field Sequence

Note the season and the disturbed-soil habitat; check that the fruitbody sits directly on the ground with no stalk; look for the olive cast in the brown inner face; turn it over and confirm the paler, granular outer wall; cut it and confirm the flesh stays inert; then record the find as a spring brown Peziza and reserve final confirmation for the microscope. That level of honesty is the mark of a good cup-fungus recorder.

Common questions

Can Common Brown Cup be named with confidence in the field?
Only provisionally. The combination of a spring season, disturbed humus-rich soil, an olive-tinged brown inner surface and a paler, finely granular outer surface points strongly to it, but the definitive separation from Bay Cup and other brown Peziza species depends on spore ornamentation under a microscope. Experienced recorders note the macroscopic characters and flag the determination as unconfirmed.
What kind of ground does it prefer?
Recently disturbed, humus-rich or woody soil. Look along the cut edges of forest tracks, on the earth thrown up by fallen trees, in wood-chip mulch and sawdust beds, in landscaped garden borders, and on ground where buried woody debris is rotting. Both hardwood and conifer settings suit it, so it is the soil condition rather than the tree species that predicts it.
Why does it have no stalk?
It is built as a sessile cup that sits directly on the substrate, with at most a short contracted base that anchors it in the soil. That base is often buried and comes away if you pull the fruitbody up, which is why it is worth excavating specimens with a knife blade so you can confirm the absence of a true stalk rather than assuming it.
What does it do ecologically?
It is a saprotroph. Its mycelium lives in the top layer of soil and decaying plant and wood fragments, breaking that material down and returning nutrients to the ground. Its preference for disturbed sites reflects the fact that freshly exposed or freshly buried organic matter offers a rich, uncontested resource to colonise quickly, which is why it is so common on tracksides and mulch beds.
