Common Funnel Identification Guide

How to identify Infundibulicybe gibba step by step: the pale leather-buff vase in autumn leaf litter, the deeply running white gills, and the details that separate it from every other funnel-shaped woodland fungus.

The Encounter

You are in deciduous woodland in late summer or autumn, walking over a deep bed of beech or oak leaves, and a scatter of pale mushrooms appears ahead — a dozen or twenty, loosely spaced, sometimes in a long meandering line or a broken arc. From above each one looks like a shallow pale dish; from ground level the profile is unmistakable, a slim stalk widening into a wide funnel with a wavy rim, the whole thing the colour of pale leather or milky tea.

The Common Funnel is one of the easier medium-sized woodland fungi to recognise, but it sits in a group where several genera converge on the same vase shape, so the identification depends on getting the details right rather than on the silhouette. Take at least three specimens of different ages, and take them with the base intact — twist and lift the whole thing out of the litter rather than snapping the stalk.

Reading the Cap

The cap is usually 4 to 8 cm across, occasionally to 10 cm. Very young buttons are convex with a small central bump, but they flatten quickly and then sink in the middle, so a mature cap is distinctly depressed and a fully mature one is a deep, clean funnel with the centre running almost down to the stalk. Look at a group and you will normally see the whole developmental series at once.

Colour is a soft pinkish-buff, tan, pale ochre or the colour of old leather, always paler at the margin and slightly deeper in the depression. The surface is dry and matt with a fine silky or suede-like feel — many people describe it as kid leather, and the description is exact. It is never slimy, never greasy, and never scaly, though the surface can look faintly radially fibrillose in dry weather.

The margin is thin, incurved when young, then spreading and becoming irregularly wavy and lobed with age. Fine radial grooves are sometimes visible at the extreme edge in wet conditions, but the cap is not conspicuously striate.

The Gills

This is where you spend your time. Turn the cap over and look at where the gills meet the stalk. In this species they are strongly decurrent: they do not stop at the stipe, they run a long way down it, tapering as they go, so the join between cap and stalk is a smooth continuous slope rather than a step. Deep decurrence like this is the core character of the funnel group.

The gills themselves are crowded, narrow, thin, and white to cream — occasionally with a very faint pinkish-buff cast in old age, but never truly pink, never grey, and never brownish. Many of them fork one or more times toward the cap edge, and short gills are inserted between the long ones. Under a lens the gill edges are even and smooth.

Press a fingernail into the gill face and leave it a minute: nothing darkens, nothing reddens.

Stipe and Base

The stipe is 4 to 8 cm long and slender for the cap it carries, typically 5 to 10 mm thick. It is the same pale buff as the cap or a shade lighter, smooth to finely fibrillose, and often slightly swollen or clubbed at the bottom. There is no ring and no volva.

The base is worth cleaning off and examining. It is normally wrapped in a conspicuous mat of white woolly mycelium that binds dead leaves and fine litter into a little pad around the bottom of the stalk. Bend the stipe: it is elastic and fibrous, and it tends to flex and tear along the grain rather than snapping cleanly. Cut it and you will find it stuffed with soft pith when young, becoming hollow in older specimens.

Flesh, Section and Smell

Split a whole fruitbody lengthwise. The flesh is thin — surprisingly thin for the width of the cap — white throughout, and soft. Watch the exposed surface for a full minute: there is no colour change of any kind, no blueing, no reddening, no blackening, and no milk or juice.

The smell of the fresh flesh is faint but distinctly aromatic and sweetish, quite unlike the flat mushroomy smell of most litter fungi, and it becomes stronger if you crush a piece between your fingers. It is worth learning, because that sweet aromatic note recurs in this group and is a useful confirming detail.

Taking a Spore Print

Cut the cap free just below the gills, lay it gills-down on white paper, cover it to keep the humidity up, and leave it three to six hours. Because the cap is funnel-shaped it will not sit flat, so prop it with a folded card or lay it on the paper at a slight tilt so a good part of the gill surface faces the sheet.

The deposit is white to very pale cream. Read it in good light and tilt the paper, because a pale print on white paper is easy to underestimate. A white print is a hard requirement here and immediately eliminates several of the funnel-shaped genera that produce pink, ochre or brown deposits.

Substrate and Season

The Common Funnel grows on the ground in leaf litter, needle litter and humus. It is a decomposer of fallen leaves and other plant debris, not a root partner, and it fruits in deciduous woodland — beech and oak especially — as well as in mixed woodland, on heaths among bracken, and along shaded hedge banks. It often forms troops, lines and partial rings as the mycelium expands outward through the litter layer.

Season is midsummer to late autumn, with the main flush from August to October, earlier than most of the grey autumn funnels it might be confused with. It is one of the first of the funnel-shaped fungi to appear each year.

Sorting Out the Look-alikes

Trooping Funnel (Infundibulicybe geotropa) shares the shape and the pale buff colour but is on a different scale entirely, with caps often 10 to 20 cm across on a thick stout stalk, and it usually keeps a distinct central umbo in the middle of the funnel even when fully expanded. It also forms conspicuous large rings in grassy woodland edges.

Club Foot (Ampulloclitocybe clavipes) has a greyish-brown to olive-brown cap rather than pinkish-buff, thick cream decurrent gills, and above all a strongly swollen, club-shaped or bulbous stipe base far more pronounced than the slight clubbing of the Common Funnel. Its flesh is soft and watery.

Tawny Funnel (Paralepista flaccida, formerly Lepista inversa) is a much warmer rusty orange to tawny-brown, grows in dense troops in conifer and mixed litter later in the season, has gills that separate easily from the cap flesh, and gives a very pale pinkish-cream print of finely warted spores.

Goblet (Pseudoclitocybe cyathiformis) is a dark grey-brown to almost blackish funnel with grey decurrent gills, appearing late in autumn and into winter. Colour alone separates it.

False Chanterelle (Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca) is orange throughout with thick, repeatedly forked, blunt-edged decurrent gills, and is a conifer and heath fungus.

Chanterelles (Cantharellus) are egg-yolk yellow and carry blunt branching ridges and cross-veins on the underside rather than true knife-edged gills — run a fingertip across the underside and the difference is obvious.

Funnel-shaped Clitopilus species are ruled out by the spore print, which is pink rather than white.

A Field Sequence

Check you are on leaf litter, not wood; check the funnel shape and the pale leather-buff colour; feel the dry suede surface; confirm the gills are white, crowded and deeply running down the stalk; find the white woolly pad at the base; cut and confirm white unchanging flesh with a sweet aromatic smell; then print white. That sequence names the Common Funnel with very little residual doubt.

Common questions

What is the quickest way to confirm a Common Funnel?
Look at the join between gills and stalk. The white to cream gills run a long way down the stipe in a smooth taper, with no step or notch. Combine that with a dry, matt, pinkish-buff cap that is deeply depressed in the centre, a slender stalk with a white woolly pad of mycelium at the base, and a white spore print, and the identification is secure.
What habitat should I search?
Deep leaf and needle litter on the woodland floor, particularly under beech and oak, plus mixed woodland, bracken-covered heathland and shaded hedge banks. It grows from the litter layer rather than from wood, and often appears in troops, curved lines or broken rings as the underground mycelium spreads outward.
When does it fruit compared with other funnel-shaped fungi?
Early. Its main season runs from midsummer through to late autumn, peaking around August to October, which puts it ahead of the grey and dark brown funnels such as Goblet that appear in late autumn and winter. Finding a pale buff funnel in August is itself a useful clue.
Is it associated with particular trees through their roots?
No. It is a saprotroph that decomposes fallen leaves, needles and other plant debris in the litter layer, so it is tied to the type and depth of litter rather than to a partnership with a specific tree. That is why it turns up under a wide range of broadleaved trees and also in bracken litter away from woodland.
