Overview
Common Script Lichen looks less like an organism than like something written on a tree. Its thin, pale grey to whitish crust merges into smooth bark, and across it run slender black lines — elongated, often branched fruiting bodies called lirellae — arranged in loops, forks and squiggles that irresistibly suggest a script in an unknown alphabet.
The genus Graphis is the type of the Graphidaceae, a huge, largely tropical family of crustose bark lichens whose fruiting bodies are elongated rather than round. Graphis scripta is the family's most familiar temperate representative and, like several widespread lichens, is now understood as a complex of closely related species separated on spore size, thallus chemistry and lirella structure.
It is a lichen of shade, humidity and smooth bark, and dense script-covered trunks in old woodland are a good sign of long ecological continuity.
How to identify it
Thallus
A thin, smooth to slightly rough crust, whitish, pale grey or faintly olive-grey, sometimes with a delicate darker line marking the colony edge. It is closely fused with the bark and cannot be peeled off. Patches range from a few centimetres to broad sheets covering much of a trunk.
Lirellae (fruiting bodies)
The defining structures: narrow black lines 0.5–5 mm or more long and only about 0.2–0.4 mm wide, straight, curved, forked or star-branched, scattered or crowded across the crust. Each is a slit-like apothecium whose disc is a fine dark groove flanked by raised black lips; the disc is not pruinose and stays narrow rather than opening wide.
Spores and internal features
Ascospores are colourless, elongated and divided by several cross-walls into a row of cells; they are best examined under a microscope and are one of the characters used to separate members of the complex.
Overall impression
A pale crust with black linear script and no lobes, no soredia patches of note, and no round disc-shaped apothecia.
Where and when it grows
Common Script Lichen requires smooth bark and shade. It grows on the trunks and larger branches of thin-barked deciduous trees, most typically beech, hazel, holly, hornbeam, ash, young oak, maple, birch and rowan, and it disappears once bark becomes deeply fissured with age.
It favours humid, sheltered, shaded woodland interiors, ravine woods, hedgerow banks and stream-side trees, avoiding exposed, dusty or strongly nutrient-enriched bark. The species is widespread across temperate North America, Europe and Asia, and comparable script lichens occur worldwide. Perennial and evergreen, it is present in every season and shows no seasonal change beyond a slight darkening when wet.
Ecological role
The fungal partner forms the crust and its script-like fruiting bodies while housing a green algal photobiont in a thin layer just beneath the surface. It is a true epiphyte, using bark purely as a stable, textured surface and drawing water and nutrients from rain, stemflow and humid air rather than from the tree.
Because it needs smooth bark, deep shade and steady humidity, its abundance is tied to woodland structure and continuity, and it is used alongside other shade epiphytes as an indicator of undisturbed woodland with stable microclimate. Dispersal is largely by ascospores squeezed from the slit-like lirellae, with colonies expanding slowly across a trunk over many years.
Similar species
Phaeographis species produce similar linear fruiting bodies, but their lirellae are broader with an exposed, often grey-pruinose disc, and their spores are brown rather than colourless. Opegrapha species also form dark line-like apothecia, but the lirellae are usually shorter, more irregular and less obviously lipped, and the thallus is thinner and often browner or olive rather than clean pale grey.
Arthonia species make dark irregular blotches or star-shaped marks rather than neat elongated slits, giving a spotted rather than a written appearance. Graphis elegans is a close relative with lirellae that have finely grooved, striate black lips and a more strongly delimited white thallus. Lecanactis and sterile crusts such as Lepraria lack linear fruiting bodies entirely, being powdery or granular films.
