Conifer Tuft Identification Guide
A step-by-step guide to Hypholoma capnoides on pine and spruce stumps, built around the smoky grey gills that never turn yellow or green, the tawny cap, the rust-based stipe and the purple-brown spore print.
The Setting and the First Impression
The habitat is written into the name. You want conifer wood: a spruce or pine stump left after felling, a mossy rotting log in a plantation, a heap of decaying brash, or buried conifer roots under a needle bed. This is a species of managed forests, plantation edges, upland conifer stands and old timber-working sites, often abundant where it occurs.
What you see is a tuft. Between five and thirty caps rise from a common patch of colonised wood, their stipes curving outward so the cluster fans out, and a well-colonised stump may carry several tufts along its cut face and rim.
The impression of colour is warm but muted: tawny ochre to honey or cinnamon-buff caps, palest at the rim, on slender stipes that are pale yellowish at the top and clearly rusty brown at the bottom. Turn one over and the second impression, the one that carries the identification, is that the gills are grey. Not yellow. Not green. A soft smoke-grey that darkens toward violet.
Reading the Cap
Size and shape. Caps run 2 to 7 cm across. They begin convex, sometimes almost hemispherical with an inrolled margin, and flatten with age, often keeping a very low central hump. Crowding within a tuft distorts many of them.
Colour. Ochre-tan, tawny, honey or cinnamon-buff, generally warmest and deepest at the centre and fading to a paler straw or cream toward the margin. There is no strong sulphur-yellow tone and no brick-red disc.
Surface. Smooth, dry to very slightly greasy in wet weather, never scaly, never conspicuously viscid. It is only faintly hygrophanous, so caps do not develop the strong two-tone tidemark seen in some wood-dwelling species.
Margin. Young caps often carry fine, pale, cobwebby veil fibrils along the rim, which disappear with expansion.
Reading the Gills
This is the decisive part of the examination, so take your time.
Attachment. Adnate, meeting the stipe squarely, sometimes with a slight decurrent tooth or a shallow notch.
Spacing. Crowded, narrow to moderately broad, with intermediate tiers.
Colour sequence. Young gills are whitish to pale grey or faintly cream. They then pass through a distinct smoke-grey or ash-grey stage, and at full maturity become grey-violet to purplish-brown as spores ripen. Look at several caps of different ages within the same tuft and you should be able to line up the whole sequence.
What must not happen. At no point should the gills be sulphur-yellow, lemon, or olive-green. The absence of yellow and green in the gills is the single most useful field character for this species and is worth checking on the youngest button in the tuft, since that is where a yellow phase would be most obvious in the alternatives.
Edges. Even, sometimes slightly paler than the faces.
The Stipe, Base and Flesh
Stipe. 3 to 10 cm long and 4 to 10 mm thick, slender, often curved or eccentric where crowding pushes it, more or less equal or slightly tapering downward.
Colour gradient. A good secondary character. The upper stipe is pale yellowish, cream or buff, and colour deepens progressively downward through ochre to a definite rusty brown or reddish brown in the lower third and at the base, the gradient smooth rather than abrupt.
Surface and ring. Finely fibrillose and longitudinally silky, with no membranous ring. Many collections show a faint fibrillose ring zone in the upper half, sometimes darkened by trapped spores, and many show nothing at all.
Texture. The stipe is fibrous and tough, and it bends before it breaks, tearing into fibres rather than snapping cleanly. Stuffed at first and hollowing with age.
Base. The stipes of a tuft converge into a shared attachment on the wood, usually wrapped in whitish mycelial felt that binds needles and wood fibres. Where a fruitbody appears to rise from needle litter, excavate: buried conifer wood is nearly always beneath.
Flesh. White to pale yellowish, firm in the cap, more fibrous in the stipe. Slice a fruitbody lengthwise and watch the cut face for several minutes. There is no colour change: no blueing, no reddening, no blackening. Bruised areas darken only slowly to a dull brownish tone.
Taking and Reading the Spore Print
Because several tufting wood fungi overlap in cap colour, the print does real work here.
Choose a fully expanded mature cap, cut the stipe flush, set the cap gill-side down on white paper, and cover with a bowl for three to four hours or overnight.
The deposit is a dark purplish-brown, sometimes described as purple-grey or violaceous brown, and it is clearly not rusty. Smear a thin film with a fingertip and the violet cast becomes obvious. Any bright, foxy, orange-brown deposit eliminates this species outright.
Under a microscope the spores are small, smooth, ellipsoid, roughly 6.5 to 8.5 by 4 to 4.5 micrometres, with a small germ pore. On the gill faces you should find chrysocystidia: swollen, thin-walled cells each containing a refractive body that turns bright yellow in dilute potassium hydroxide. Their presence confirms the genus quickly.
Substrate and Season
The substrate is close to diagnostic when combined with gill colour. This is a decomposer of dead conifer wood: spruce, pine, fir and larch stumps, logs, large branches and buried roots, especially wood already softened by earlier decay. Records on hardwood are unusual enough to prompt a recheck.
Fruiting runs from late summer through autumn and often well into early winter. This is a genuinely late species, tolerant of cold and frost, and in mild seasons it is among the last agarics still producing fresh tufts on plantation stumps in December. The same stump usually produces successive flushes over several years, and the species is widespread throughout temperate and boreal Europe, North America and Asia.
Separating the Look-Alikes on Morphology Alone
Sulphur Tuft (Hypholoma fasciculare) is the species you must exclude every time, since it shares the habit, the tufting, the purple-brown print and often the same stump. Go straight to the gills: Sulphur Tuft has sulphur-yellow gills when young that mature through olive to grey-green, whereas this species goes white to grey to grey-violet with no yellow or green at any stage. Its caps are also brighter and more lemon-yellow, often with an orange-brown disc, and it fruits on hardwood as well as conifer.
Brick Tuft (Hypholoma lateritium) is larger and stouter, with a brick-red to rusty-orange cap centre fading to a pale, often veil-flecked margin, whitish then olive-grey gills, and a strong preference for hardwood stumps.
Hypholoma marginatum (Hypholoma dispersum) grows scattered or in small groups rather than dense tufts, is more slender, and its stipe is conspicuously clothed in white fibrillose scales below a distinct veil line.
Sheathed Woodtuft (Kuehneromyces mutabilis) shares the tufting habit but has a strongly two-toned hygrophanous cap that dries pale from the centre while a darker band persists at the margin, a definite membranous ring with small recurved scales beneath it, and a rusty-brown spore print.
Common Rustgill (Gymnopilus penetrans) also grows on conifer wood but its gills are yellow then rusty with irregular rust-brown freckling, and its print is bright rusty orange-brown.
Pholiota species are usually viscid and conspicuously scaly, often with a ring, and drop dull brown rather than purple-brown prints.
Psathyrella species on stumps have thin white hollow stipes that snap cleanly instead of bending, and much more strongly hygrophanous caps.
