Early Morel Identification Guide

A field walkthrough for Verpa bohemica, the wrinkled tan thimble that hangs free from its stalk in the earliest spring woods. Covers the vertical rib pattern, the cottony stuffed stipe, the giant two-spored asci and the vertical cut that separates it from true morels.

The First Impression and the Setting

This is a fungus of the very start of the season. The woods are still bare, the ground is cold and wet, and in many years there is old snow in the shaded hollows. The classic ground is river bottom and floodplain: stands of cottonwood, aspen, poplar, willow and elm on damp alluvial soil, with a litter of last year's leaves and a lot of bare mud. Old orchards, damp hedge banks and rich woodland margins produce it too.

What you see is a pale stalk 6 to 15 cm high with a darker wrinkled thimble on top, standing among leaf litter, often in numbers. A good site can produce dozens or hundreds in a band under one row of trees, because this fungus tends to fruit in loose colonies rather than singly. The overall impression is morel-like at a glance, which is exactly why the step-by-step reading below matters.

The Decisive Test: How the Cap Attaches

Before anything else, take one fruitbody and cut it vertically from the top of the cap down through the base of the stalk. This single cut answers most of the question.

In Verpa the cap is attached to the stalk only at the very apex. The rest of it hangs completely free, like a thimble dropped over the end of a stick or a skirt hanging from a waistband, so in section you see a clear gap between the inside of the cap and the outside of the stalk all the way round. In a true morel the cap is fused to the stalk along the cap margin, or attached partway down, and the interior is one continuous hollow chamber.

Make this cut on every collection and on more than one fruitbody, because young material can look deceptively fused from the outside.

Reading the Cap

The cap is 2 to 5 cm tall and 2 to 4 cm wide, thimble- to bell-shaped, with a free lower edge that is often wavy, flared or shallowly lobed and sometimes torn.

The outer surface carries the fertile layer and the sculpture that names the species: prominent longitudinal wrinkles and ribs, running more or less vertically from the apex to the margin, forking and rejoining, with only shallow irregular cross-links between them. The effect is of brain-like or contorted folds, not of a honeycomb. There are no true pits with sharply raised ridges surrounding them.

Colour ranges through yellow-brown, tan, olive-brown and finally dark brown as the fruitbody matures, and the ribs are often darker than the valleys between them. The inner surface of the thimble, which is sterile, is much paler - whitish to pale buff - and slightly mealy or granular to the touch. That strong contrast between a dark outside and a pale inside is a good supporting feature.

Reading the Stipe

The stalk is 5 to 12 cm long and 1 to 2.5 cm thick, cylindrical or slightly tapered upwards, sometimes a little wider at the base. It is whitish, cream or faintly pinkish-buff, and the surface is finely granular and scurfy, often arranged in faint transverse bands or zones of loose meal that rub off on the fingers. It is not deeply ribbed, grooved or lumpy.

Now look at the inside of the stalk in the same vertical cut. In young fruitbodies it is stuffed with loose white cottony pith which fills the tube. As the fruitbody ages that pith shrinks and pulls away, leaving a partly hollow tube with wisps and flocci of cotton clinging to the inner wall. A true morel stalk, by contrast, is cleanly hollow and bare inside from the first. This interior texture is the second half of the vertical-cut test and is just as reliable as the attachment point.

The Base, Flesh and Colour Change

The base is blunt or slightly swollen, without any sac, cup or bag of tissue around it, and it is usually bound to soil and leaf litter by white mycelial threads. Excavate rather than snap, since the base sits deeper than you expect in soft alluvial ground.

The flesh is thin, whitish and brittle-waxy in both cap and stalk. There is no latex, no juice, and no colour change on cutting - the cut faces stay white. Bruised areas may eventually discolour brownish where the surface is damaged, but there is no immediate reaction to record.

Taking a Spore Deposit

This is an ascomycete, so the spores are fired outward from the whole fertile outer surface of the cap rather than dropped from an underside. That changes how you take a deposit.

Cut the stalk off and lay the cap on its side on white paper inside a closed box overnight; the deposit will form around the cap in a broad scatter rather than as a neat print beneath it. The colour is pale yellowish to cream.

Under the microscope this species is unambiguous. The spores are enormous, typically 55 to 80 micrometres long by 15 to 20 wide, smooth and ellipsoid with rounded ends, and each ascus contains only two of them. Most Pezizales pack eight spores per ascus, so gigantic two-spored asci settle the identification completely. Even a cheap microscope shows this clearly on a squash mount of the cap surface.

Substrate and Season

The species behaves as a soil-dwelling decomposer with a strong preference for rich, damp, often disturbed ground under broadleaved trees. Cottonwood, aspen, poplar and willow along watercourses are the classic partners, along with elm and ash; some western collections come from conifer-influenced ground, and old orchards, hedge bottoms and river gravel banks are all worth working.

The timing is part of the identification. It fruits very early, as soon as soil temperatures rise, often while snowmelt is still running and weeks ahead of the main flush of true morels. A wrinkled tan thimble fungus found at the very front of the season, in a floodplain cottonwood stand, is statistically more likely to be this than a morel, though you should still make the cut.

Separating It From the Look-alikes

Verpa conica. The same genus, so it shares the apex-only attachment and the cottony stuffed stalk. The difference is the cap surface: in conica it is smooth to only faintly wrinkled, and the cap is a more evenly bell-shaped or conical thimble, often darker brown. If your cap has strong forking vertical ribs, you are in bohemica. Habitat also leans differently, with conica more often under hawthorn, ash and other hedgerow trees on lime-rich ground.

True morels, Morchella species. The cap surface is a network of raised ridges enclosing distinct pits, arranged either in vertical rows or irregularly. The cap is fused to the stalk, the whole fruitbody is a single hollow chamber, and the stalk interior is smooth and bare. Cap colour and ridge darkening vary enormously and are not reliable, so use structure, not colour.

Half-free morels such as Morchella punctipes and M. semilibera. These are the real trap, because part of the cap does hang free like a skirt. Two things separate them: their cap surface is pitted and ridged rather than longitudinally ribbed, and the free portion is only about the lower half of the cap, with the upper half fused. Their stalks are also hollow and bare inside.

Gyromitra species. The cap is an irregular, convoluted, brain-like or saddle-shaped mass that is attached to the stalk at multiple points and often folded back on itself, usually reddish-brown to dark brown. The stalk is frequently chambered or lacunose in section rather than simply hollow or stuffed.

Helvella species. Saddle-shaped, lobed or cup-like caps on stalks that are often deeply ribbed and pocketed, and their main season is later in the year.

A Working Sequence

Note the very early date and the floodplain hardwoods. Cut vertically. Confirm the cap hangs free from the apex only. Confirm cottony stuffing in the stalk. Read the cap sculpture as vertical ribs, not pits. If you have a microscope, look for two spores per ascus and confirm the identification outright.
