Elastic Saddle Identification Guide

A close-range walkthrough for Helvella elastica, the slim woodland saddle with a smooth round stalk and a drooping two-lobed head. Covers the fertile and sterile surfaces, the ungrooved stipe, ascomycete spore deposits, and how to separate it from the ribbed and hairy saddles.

The Setting and the First Glance

Almost every encounter with the Elastic Saddle happens on foot, at close range, along a shaded path in mixed or coniferous woodland from midsummer into autumn. The fungus is small, pale and strictly vertical, and it stands up out of moss, needle duff or bare damp mineral soil at a trail edge, on a bank above a stream, or in the disturbed ground beside a fallen trunk. From a few paces away it reads as a thin cream-coloured drinking straw with a crumpled tan flag folded over the top. Nothing about it is bulky. A typical fruitbody stands 6 to 10 cm tall and weighs almost nothing.

Fix that silhouette in your memory, because in the genus Helvella the stalk carries at least as much identification weight as the head does. Get down to ground level before you touch anything. You want to see the stalk in profile against the light, and you want to see whether the lobes of the head hang free or are fused to the stalk along their edges.

Reading the Head

The head is an apothecium, a fertile disc that has folded rather than a cap in the usual sense. It measures roughly 1 to 4 cm across and 1 to 3 cm tall, and it is typically two-lobed, the two lobes drooping down on opposite sides so the profile looks like a saddle draped over a post. Three-lobed and irregularly crumpled heads are common enough that you should not treat two lobes as a rule. The lobes are attached to the stalk only at the summit; along their edges they are free, and in young material they often curl slightly upward or inward before flaring out.

The upper, outward-facing surface is the fertile one. It is smooth, even and slightly undulating, without wrinkles or ridges, and coloured tan, ochre-buff, greyish-brown or a dull cinnamon. Pale cream forms occur. Wet weather darkens it noticeably, so treat colour as a range rather than a key.

Now turn the head over and look underneath with a hand lens. The sterile lower surface is paler, whitish to buff, and finely mealy or minutely downy at magnification rather than smooth and polished. Critically, it is plain: there are no raised veins or ribs running up from the stalk onto the underside. That absence is one half of the identification.

The Stipe Is the Other Half

The stalk is 3 to 10 cm long and only 2 to 6 mm thick, equal in width or tapering very slightly upward. It is white to pale cream, sometimes ageing greyish or faintly buff, and it is smooth and round in cross-section. Run a fingertip down it: you should feel nothing but a very slight silkiness. There are no longitudinal ribs, no flutes, no deep grooves and no pockets. Slice the stalk lengthwise with a knife and you will find a single narrow hollow channel, sometimes loosely stuffed with cottony tissue in young specimens, never a series of chambers separated by internal walls.

The base is usually only slightly enlarged where it enters the litter, and often carries a small amount of white downy mycelium binding soil grains and moss. Excavate rather than pull. The lower centimetre of stalk is easy to lose and it is worth checking for the smooth, unribbed condition all the way down.

Flesh, Texture and Colour Change

The flesh is very thin, whitish, and waxy-brittle with a distinct pliancy — it bends a surprising amount before it finally snaps, which is exactly what the species epithet refers to. Cut a head in half and a stalk across; there is no colour change of any kind, no latex and no darkening at the cut over the following minutes. The odour is faint and unremarkable. If your specimen bruises, discolours, or exudes anything, you are not in this species.

Getting a Spore Deposit From an Ascomycete

Saddle fungi do not drop spores passively the way a gilled mushroom does; the asci fire them outward under pressure. You can still take a deposit. Rest the head fertile-side-down on a sheet of dark glass or black card, cover it with a cup to hold humidity, and leave it a few hours. The result is a faint whitish film, often a diffuse halo a centimetre or two wide rather than a crisp shadow of the lobes. On a fresh specimen you can sometimes trigger a visible puff of spores by breathing warm, moist air across the fertile surface and watching against a dark background.

Under a microscope the asci hold eight spores in a row. The spores are broadly ellipsoid, smooth-walled, about 18 to 22 by 10 to 13 micrometres, and each contains a single large central oil droplet. Smooth walls and one big droplet are useful genus-level confirmation.

Substrate and Season

The Elastic Saddle grows on the ground, not on wood. Expect it singly, scattered or in loose groups on damp humus, moss cushions, needle beds and bare soil in mixed woodland, under conifers, along mossy stream banks and on shaded roadside cuttings. It favours moist ground and appears from midsummer through autumn across the northern temperate zone, with the flush strongest a week or two after sustained rain. Old, rotted wood buried in soil will sometimes support it, but a fruitbody rising directly from a hard log surface points elsewhere.

Separating It From the Other Saddles

Work through the stalk first, then the underside of the head.

Helvella crispa is white, considerably stouter, and has a thick stalk that is deeply fluted with ribs and internal pockets; its lobes are crisped and wavy and its head underside is downy. The ribs alone settle it.

Helvella lacunosa and its western relative H. vespertina have grey to blackish saddles and grey stalks that are deeply grooved and chambered. Colour plus flutes make these straightforward.

Helvella macropus is the trap. It is grey-brown, the head is shallowly cup-shaped to only weakly saddled, and both the head underside and the entire stalk are conspicuously grey-hairy and velvety to the touch. The Elastic Saddle's stalk is smooth and pale. Under a lens the difference is obvious.

Helvella albella, H. stevensii and similar plain-stemmed taxa are the genuine difficulty, since they share the smooth terete stalk. Look at head colour, the degree of downiness beneath, and spore dimensions; be prepared to record the collection as part of an unresolved complex, because modern sequencing shows H. elastica in the broad sense covers several closely similar species.

Gyromitra infula is much larger, reddish to date-brown, and its saddle lobes are partly fused to a stout stalk rather than hanging free.

Anything with a pitted, honeycombed head sitting on a hollow stalk is a morel, not a saddle: morels have a network of ridges and pits, never two smooth drooping lobes.

What is the quickest way to confirm an Elastic Saddle in the field?
Look at the stalk. It must be slender, pale, smooth and round in cross-section, with no ribs, flutes or internal chambers, and it must carry a small saddle-shaped head whose sterile underside is plain rather than veined. That combination separates it from almost every other common saddle fungus at a glance.
