Fire Morel Identification Guide
A practical walkthrough for recognising Morchella tomentosa in a one-year-old conifer burn, from the velvety grey-black head and ladder-like pits to the thick, layered, rooting stipe base.
The ground you are standing on
Fire Morel is a species you find by choosing the right landscape rather than by searching at random. The setting is a western conifer forest that burned hard the previous summer: blackened lodgepole pine, Douglas-fir or spruce boles still standing, a grey-white skin of ash over mineral soil, charcoal underfoot, and the first fireweed and bracken pushing up through it. The duff layer has been burned away, so you are looking at bare, gritty ground rather than a mattress of needles. Elevation matters as much as the burn does. In the Rockies, Cascades and interior ranges the fruiting front follows the snowline uphill, so a low burn produces in May and a subalpine burn may not produce until early July.
The first impression is of something you nearly stepped on. A sooty grey-black cone standing three to eight centimetres tall in a field of charcoal is close to invisible until you drop your eye level and use the low light. Experienced eyes look for the shape, not the colour: a narrow vertical object with a matte, pitted texture among the flat, glossy fragments of burnt wood. Fruit bodies are usually scattered rather than clustered, often near the base of a standing trunk or on a slope where the ash has washed thin.
Reading the fertile head
Take the whole fruit body in hand and start at the top. The head is 3 to 8 cm tall and 2 to 5 cm wide, conical to narrowly egg-shaped, and it is a true pitted-and-ridged morel head: vertical primary ridges running from base to apex, crossed by shorter horizontal ridges, so the pits between them are elongated and arranged in rough vertical ladders. Young ridges are dark grey to almost black. As the fruit body matures the ridges flatten, wear, and pale to grey-tan or buff while the pits stay darker, so an old Fire Morel looks two-toned and much less black than a fresh one.
Now look at the ridges through a hand lens, because this is the character the species is named for. The whole surface of a young head is covered in a fine tomentum of hyphal tufts, a velvety, frosted, almost dusty pile that softens the black into a smoky grey. Rub one ridge with a fingertip and the tomentum wipes away, leaving a darker and slightly glossier line behind. That single test is the most useful macroscopic character in the field, and it is best done on the freshest fruit body you can find, since the pile weathers off in older material.
Check how the head joins the stipe. In this species the head is attached at its base, sometimes with a shallow groove or gutter at the junction, and never hangs free like a skirt or a thimble.
Stipe, base and interior
The stipe is whitish to pale grey when young, ageing to buff, ochre or tan, and its surface is granular and finely scurfy rather than smooth. It is usually shorter than the head or roughly equal to it, and the lower half is often furrowed, folded and irregular.
The base is the second signature character. In Fire Morel the stipe base is characteristically swollen, sometimes rooting into the ash, and frequently split or bifurcating. Slice the whole fruit body in half from apex to base and look at the wall thickness. In this species the wall of the lower stipe is conspicuously thickened and often looks layered or doubled, with soft cottony pockets of tissue trapped inside the folds of the base. That thick, layered, rooting base combined with the velvety head is a combination nothing else in the burn shares.
The interior itself is a single continuous hollow chamber running from the tip of the head to the bottom of the stipe. Nothing fills it but air and the occasional insect. The flesh is thin, whitish and slightly waxy-brittle. There is no latex, and cutting produces no dramatic colour change, though exposed surfaces slowly darken as they dry.
Taking a spore print
Morels are cup fungi, so a print behaves differently from a gilled mushroom. Set a mature head pits-upward on dark paper, cover it with a bowl to hold humidity, and leave it somewhere cool overnight. A ripe specimen will release a faint pale deposit, and a sudden change in temperature or a light tap will sometimes trigger a visible puff of spores from the pits. The deposit is pale cream to yellowish-buff, never dark brown or black.
Under the microscope the spores are smooth, ellipsoid and large, roughly 20 to 28 by 13 to 18 micrometres, arranged eight to an ascus, with club-shaped paraphyses between the asci. Mount a scrape from a ridge surface and you will see the tomentum resolve into chains of thin-walled hyphal cells with rounded end segments, which is the microscopic version of the velvety field character.
Substrate, season and range
Fire Morel is tied to fire. The heavy flushes come in the first spring and early summer after a stand-replacing burn in conifer forest, with a lighter second-year flush in some burns and very little afterwards. Fruit bodies come out of mineral soil and ash rather than out of wood, and the best ground is usually where the fire burned hot enough to strip the organic layer entirely. Its range covers the Rocky Mountains, the Cascades, the Sierra Nevada, interior British Columbia, Alaska and the Yukon, from lower montane forest up to subalpine basins.
Separating it from its look-alikes
Other burn morels of the black group, such as Morchella exuberans and its relatives, share the same charred ground and are the real test. They are glabrous: run a lens over the ridges and you find a bare surface with no hyphal pile. Their ridges tend to sharpen and darken with age rather than flatten and pale, their stipes are thin-walled and evenly hollow, and the base is not thickened, layered or rooting.
Morchella snyderi also has dark young ridges, but it is smooth rather than velvety, its stipe is conspicuously pitted and chambered instead of granular, and it favours unburned conifer forest.
Verpa bohemica looks superficially similar at a distance but the head hangs free like a thimble, attached only at the very apex, and its surface is longitudinally wrinkled and brain-like rather than genuinely pitted with a ladder of cross ridges. Cut the stipe and it is stuffed with cottony fibres instead of being cleanly hollow.
False morels in the genus Gyromitra have irregularly lobed, saddle-shaped or convoluted heads with no ridge-and-pit network at all, and their interiors are filled with folded chambers rather than one open cavity.
