A practical routine for the bright yellow parasol that erupts overnight in houseplant pots and greenhouse beds: powdery cap, pleated margin, free gills, fragile ring, and a white spore print that separates it from Bolbitius titubans.
The Setting Gives It Away
Very few fungi announce themselves by habitat as loudly as this one. You find it indoors, in a plant pot, on a greenhouse bench, or in a bark-mulched bed in a warm climate, and it appears overnight — usually within a day or two of a thorough watering. The colour does the rest of the work: a brilliant chrome to lemon yellow that no houseplant produces and that stands out immediately against dark potting compost.
Typically there is not one but a small cohort at different stages, which is a gift for identification because you can read the entire developmental sequence in a single pot. Look for tiny yellow eggs just breaking the surface, taller bell-shaped adolescents, and one or two fully opened parasols already fading and sagging. Note also how short-lived it is: a fruit body that opens in the morning is often collapsed by the following day, drooping and going translucent rather than rotting.
Reading the Cap
Start with a young button. It is an oval or egg, 1 to 2 cm, intensely yellow, and covered all over in a fine mealy powder that comes off on your fingers. That powder is the remains of the outer veil and it is one of the defining textures of the genus. As the fruit body extends, the cap passes through a conical then bell-shaped stage and finally flattens out, often with a low broad umbo left in the centre.
Expanded caps are 2 to 6 cm across. The centre keeps the deepest yellow and the most powder; the margin pales toward straw or almost off-white, especially in older or drier material, so a single cap can look two-toned. The single most useful structural mark is the margin: it becomes strongly and radially grooved, pleated like a folded paper fan, with the grooves running a third or more of the way to the centre. In age those pleats split and the whole margin can tear and curl upward.
The whole thing is astonishingly thin and light. Cap flesh is barely a millimetre thick over most of its area, pale yellow, and it changes colour nowhere — no bruising, no reddening, no darkening on cutting.
The Gills
Look under the cap and check the attachment carefully, because it matters. The gills are free: they stop short of the stem and leave a narrow gutter or collar all the way round, so nothing runs down onto the stipe. They are crowded, moderately deep, soft and easily damaged, and short intermediate gills are interleaved between the full-length ones.
Colour is pale yellow to sulphur, sometimes almost whitish-yellow in fading material — and, critically, they never develop brown, rusty or cinnamon tones as they mature. If you are watching gills darken toward brown, you are looking at something else entirely.
Stipe, Ring and Base
The stipe is long and thin relative to the cap: 3 to 10 cm tall but only 2 to 5 mm thick, hollow, extremely fragile, and snapping at the slightest bend. It is yellow, powdery-mealy over most of its length like the cap, and it usually widens gently downward to a slightly swollen, club-like or small bulbous base seated in the compost. Ease it out and you will normally find yellowish mycelial threads running off into the potting medium.
Look for a ring roughly halfway up or a little higher. It is thin, yellow, membranous and often loose enough to slide, and it collapses, tears or falls away entirely in older material — so a missing ring is not evidence against the identification, but a present one is good supporting evidence. There is no cup, sac or volva at the base, only the slight swelling.
Taking a Spore Print
Because the whole fruit body collapses so fast, take the print from a cap that has just fully opened, before it begins to droop. Cut the stipe off flush, set the cap gill-side down on a piece of dark paper or a glass slide, cover it with a cup and leave it two to four hours; a thin cap gives up its spores quickly.
The deposit is white. Read it against something dark, and read it carefully, because loose yellow powder shed from the cap surface can drift down and tint a thin deposit. Scrape the print into a heap with a blade before judging the colour. A clean white print with free yellow gills and a ringed yellow stipe is the confirming combination for this species.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
This fungus is a decomposer of rich organic material. Its substrate is potting compost, peat-based growing media, greenhouse soil, wood-chip mulch and leaf mould — never living plant tissue and never sound structural wood. It does not attack the plant it shares a pot with; the mycelium simply breaks down the composted material in the medium and, when conditions turn warm and wet, throws up fruit bodies.
Indoors it fruits at any time of year whenever the pot is warm and freshly watered, which is why it turns up in January in heated rooms. Outdoors it is a warm-climate species, fruiting in summer and early autumn in mulched beds and glasshouse borders. It is now effectively global, distributed with the horticultural trade in bagged growing media, and because the mycelium persists in the pot it reappears repeatedly from the same container for months or years.
Separating the Look-alikes
Leucocoprinus cepistipes shares the powdery texture, pleated margin, free gills, ring and white spore print, but it is whitish to cream overall with a browner powdery centre, generally larger, and has a distinctly bulbous, onion-like stem base. Colour alone usually settles it.
Leucocoprinus straminellus is a paler straw-yellow, smaller and thinner, and fades faster; separating the two reliably needs microscopy, but the deep chrome yellow of young buttons here is a strong pointer.
Leucocoprinus fragilissimus is even more delicate — the cap is membranous and almost translucent, greenish-yellow, and the gills are strikingly few and widely spaced. It disintegrates at a touch.
Bolbitius titubans is the trap worth learning. It is also egg-yellow and also turns up in rich organic ground, but its cap is viscid and slimy rather than dry and powdery, it has no ring, its gills go from pale to rusty cinnamon as they mature, and its spore print is rusty brown. It also grows on grass, straw and dung rather than in flowerpots.
Conocybe species on plant pots and lawns are tan to ochre rather than yellow, have a conical smooth cap and give a rusty-brown print.
Small Leucoagaricus and Lepiota species may share the ring and white print, but they are firmer, white to brownish-scaled rather than chrome yellow, and they grow in outdoor soil and litter.
