Freckled Dapperling Identification Guide
Working through Echinoderma asperum in the field: the erect brown pyramidal cap spines, veil-fringed margin, forking free gills and woolly stalk that pin it down among spiny-capped look-alikes.
The Setting and the First Impression
The Freckled Dapperling is a mushroom of rich, disturbed, shady ground. You will usually be pushing through a nettle bed at the edge of broadleaf woodland, working along a hedge bank, or standing in a neglected corner of a park or churchyard where the soil is deep, nitrogen-rich and often limy. It also appears in shelterbelts, on old compost-enriched banks and among ivy under sycamore or beech.
The first impression is of a solid, spiky, brown-topped mushroom, noticeably chunkier than most dapperlings. Cap five to twelve centimetres across, dry, dull ochre to warm reddish-brown or date-brown, and rough all over, as if it had been rolled in coarse crumbs. That prickly texture, on a mushroom with a whitish stalk and free white gills, is the starting point.
Reading the Cap
Young caps are hemispherical and almost entirely covered by the veil, giving them a shaggy, unopened look; they expand through convex to broadly flat, often keeping a low, blunt umbo.
The surface repays close attention. The ground colour is pale buff to cream, but it is largely hidden by a dense armament of scales. These scales are not flat patches: they are erect, conical, pyramidal spines or warts, one to three millimetres tall, sharply pointed, coloured mid to dark brown and set closest together over the disc, becoming smaller and sparser towards the margin. Run a fingertip over the cap and they catch on the skin; brush harder and they detach cleanly, leaving small pale round scars on a smooth pale cap surface. Rain and age remove many of them, so old caps can look almost bald in the centre with a ring of spines still standing further out.
The margin is important too. It is usually appendiculate, hung with soft whitish to pale brown fragments of the partial veil that persist as a ragged fringe long after the cap has opened. In young specimens the margin is inrolled and shaggy.
The Gills
Turn the cap over. Gills are free, distinctly so, ending in a clear gap around the stipe apex, and they are crowded, narrow to moderately broad and soft. Colour is white to cream at first, dulling to pale buff or with faint pinkish-brown stains where damaged or with age.
Now use a lens on the gill faces near the margin. In this species the gills frequently fork and are connected near the cap edge by low cross-veins, and the gill edges are minutely fringed or floccose. Forking gills combined with erect cap spines is a strong combination.
Stipe, Ring and Base
The stipe is five to twelve centimetres tall and eight to fifteen millimetres thick, cylindrical, usually widening downwards and ending in a distinctly swollen, rounded to abruptly marginate bulb. There is no sac, cup or free volva around that bulb, only a firm swelling with white mycelial strands binding leaf litter and soil.
Above the ring the stalk is smooth, whitish and often faintly silky. Below the ring it is a different animal: covered in a woolly, felty, floccose layer of brownish to ochre fibrils and small scales, concentrated towards the base and often arranged into vague bands. The stalk is stuffed then hollow, fibrous, and it splits lengthwise easily.
The ring is high on the stalk, large but flimsy: a spreading, membranous, whitish collar whose upper surface may be dusted with the same brown granules as the cap, and whose lower surface is woolly. It tears readily and in older specimens survives only as an irregular fibrous zone with scraps hanging from it.
Flesh, Colour Change and Odour
Cut the fruit body in half from cap to base. The flesh is white, firm and reasonably thick over the disc, thinner towards the margin, and white and fibrous in the stalk around a hollow core.
Watch the cut face. There is no rapid or dramatic colour change; at most the flesh dulls to pale cream or acquires a faint brownish or slightly pinkish tinge over several minutes, particularly in the stipe base. Nothing turns red, orange, blue or green.
The odour, on the other hand, is strong and distinctive, and should be checked deliberately by crushing a piece of flesh between the fingers. It is sharp, unpleasant and chemical-sounding, variously described as rubbery, gassy or resembling a rank, sour cellar. Combined with the spiny cap it is a reliable confirmation.
Taking and Reading a Spore Print
Cut the stipe flush with the gills, lay the cap gill-side down on half-black, half-white paper, cover it with a bowl and leave it three to eight hours or overnight in a cool, still place.
The print is white to pale cream. Under the microscope the spores are small, smooth, ellipsoid to oblong with a slightly flattened side, and they stain dull reddish-brown in Melzer's reagent, the dextrinoid reaction expected in this group. Gill-edge cells are club-shaped to bottle-shaped, and the cap spines are built of chains of swollen, thick-walled cells, which is what allows them to stand up as rigid cones rather than lying flat. A brown, rusty or green print would rule this species out at once.
Substrate, Season and Habitat
This is a saprotroph of nutrient-rich humus. It thrives where nitrogen has accumulated: nettle beds, hedge banks, woodland edges, old bonfire and compost sites, parkland under broadleaf trees, and it shows a marked preference for calcareous or at least base-rich soils. It fruits from midsummer to late autumn, usually singly or in small scattered groups, sometimes in loose clusters where the litter is deepest. It does not grow on standing wood, though it will fruit on very rotten buried timber mixed into soil.
Separating It from Look-Alikes
Echinoderma calcicola is the nearest relative and is best separated by size and tone: it is larger and stouter, with paler, greyer, coarser spines on a whiter cap, and it is even more strictly tied to chalk and limestone.
Amanita echinocephala also carries pointed warts on a pale cap, but the differences are decisive: its warts are pyramidal veil remnants on a whitish to greyish cap, its gills age to a distinctly greenish-cream, its stalk base is a large rooting, rimmed bulb with concentric ridges, and it is mycorrhizal with broadleaf trees on chalk.
Shaggy Parasol (Chlorophyllum rhacodes) has coarse, upturned, flat shaggy scales rather than erect conical spines, a thick double movable ring, and flesh that flushes orange-red then brown within a minute of cutting.
Stinking Dapperling (Lepiota cristata) is far smaller and slimmer, with flat reddish-brown concentric scales on a smooth white cap, a thin fragile ring and a sharp radish-like odour.
Cystoderma species are smaller, granular rather than spiny, with a granular-sheathed stalk and gills that are attached to the stipe rather than free.
Carry the diagnostic bundle: erect brown pyramidal spines that rub off, a veil-fringed margin, free forking white gills, a woolly-scaly stalk with a bulbous base and flimsy ring, a strong rubbery odour, and a white spore print in rich nettle-bed soil.
