Girdled Knight Identification Guide

A field walkthrough for Tricholoma cingulatum, the grey knight that carries a woolly white belt on its stem and grows only where willows are rooted. Covers the cap, notched gills, ring, spore print and the close grey relatives it is confused with.

Reading the Habitat Before the Mushroom

Girdled Knight is a species you locate by finding its partner tree first. It is tied to willows, so the productive ground is open, damp and often disturbed rather than deep closed forest: dune slacks where creeping willow mats across the sand, the gravelly shoulders of a flooded pit, wet flushes beside forestry tracks, the sedgy fringe of a fen, and young thickets of grey or goat willow colonising bare mineral soil. The willow involved is frequently only ankle to knee high, which catches people out. You can be standing in what looks like rough grassland and still be inside a willow wood as far as the fungus is concerned. Fruit bodies come up in scattered troops, loose arcs and small huddles through moss, sedge litter and damp sand, and because the caps are a sober grey they read as pebbles or fallen leaves until your eye locks on.

The First Impression

The overall shape is unmistakably that of a knight, the informal name for the genus Tricholoma: a firm, fleshy, medium-small mushroom with a dry fibrous cap, pale gills that are notched where they run up to the stem, a solid pale stem, and no rusty or dark tones anywhere. Caps are usually 3 to 7 cm across, so this is a mushroom of modest build, neither a fragile grassland species nor a heavyweight. Then comes the detail that names it: a soft, woolly, whitish band encircling the upper stem. Almost every other grey knight is entirely ringless, so a persistent cottony girdle on a grey, willow-associated Tricholoma is already most of the determination.

Working Through the Cap

Start with shape. Young caps are convex with the margin curved inward; with age they expand to broadly convex or nearly flat and normally retain a low, blunt central hump. The surface is the next check: it should be dry and matt, never greasy or polished, and covered in fine radial fibrils that break into small pressed-down scales, densest and darkest over the centre. Colour runs from mouse-grey through ash-grey to grey-brown, occasionally with a faint brownish or lilac cast in the middle, and the fibrils create a subtly streaked look rather than a uniform wash. The margin is thin, sometimes shallowly wavy, not lined or grooved, and may split radially in dry weather. Wipe the cap gently with a fingertip: a viscid film would push you away from this species and toward other genera entirely.

The Spore-Bearing Surface

The gills are the second structural pillar of the identification. Slice one mushroom vertically from cap edge to stem base and look at the profile. The gills should be sinuate, meaning they run toward the stem and then curve up into a distinct notch just before attaching. They are neither free nor decurrent. In the hand they are moderately crowded, fairly narrow, white when young, ageing to cream or pale greyish, and often develop rusty or grey blotches and a finely uneven edge in older fruit bodies. Draw a fingernail across them: they should be firm and slightly waxy in feel, not brittle and shattering.

Stipe, Girdle and Base

The stem is 3 to 8 cm long and roughly 0.5 to 1.2 cm thick, cylindrical or thickening slightly downward, white to off-white, and solid when young. The defining feature sits about two-thirds of the way up: a soft, cottony white ring formed from the fibrous partial veil. It varies. In fresh dry material it is a distinct woolly collar; in wet weather it can collapse into a matted belt or a fibrous zone with tufts of veil hanging free. Below the girdle the stem surface is finely woolly or flocculose; above it, smooth and sometimes faintly powdery. At the base, scrape the litter away carefully rather than pulling: the base is usually white, occasionally with a faint ochre stain, and you can often trace pale mycelial threads running off toward willow roots. That physical link is worth confirming, because it turns a habitat guess into a habitat observation.

Flesh and Colour Change

Split a fruit body lengthwise and watch the cut face for a few minutes. The flesh is white and firm, sometimes with a slightly greyer band immediately under the cap skin, and it does not change appreciably. There is no latex, no blueing, no reddening; at most a weak yellowish tint can appear at the stem base in some collections after a long wait. The odour is strong and floury, the classic ground-grain smell of the genus, and it is best judged by crushing a small piece of stem flesh between finger and thumb and smelling immediately.

Taking and Reading a Spore Print

Cut the stem off flush with the gills, set the cap gills-down on a sheet that is half white and half dark, cover it with an upturned cup or bowl to hold humidity, and leave it three to six hours or overnight somewhere cool. When the deposit has built up, scrape it into a thick ridge with a blade and judge the colour of that concentrated pile in daylight against white paper. The correct answer here is pure white to at most a faint cream. Any pink, ochre, rust or cocoa tone removes Tricholoma from consideration completely and redirects you to Entoloma, Hebeloma, Cortinarius or the pinkgills. Under a lens the spores are smooth and broadly ellipsoid, roughly 4.5 to 6 by 3 to 4 microns, and do not turn blue-black in iodine reagents.

Substrate, Partners and Season

This is an ectomycorrhizal species, exchanging mineral nutrients with willow roots in return for carbon, and it has no interest in wood or dung. Records cluster on calcareous sand, damp mineral soil and disturbed ground, most often with creeping willow, grey willow and goat willow. The fruiting window runs from late summer into late autumn, peaking after a soaking rain followed by frost-free nights. Because the tree association is so tight, treat it as part of the identification rather than a footnote. A grey, ringed knight under pines or oaks with no willow within rooting distance needs rethinking.

Separating It From Close Relatives

Tricholoma scalpturatum is the one that really matters. It shares the grey fibrillose cap and the general build, and it also produces a veil, but that veil leaves only a fleeting fibrous zone rather than a persistent woolly girdle. More usefully, its gills turn a distinct sulphur to chrome yellow with age and where bruised, a change Girdled Knight does not show. It also partners with a wide spread of broadleaved trees and conifers rather than willow alone.

Tricholoma terreum has a similar grey, felty-scaly cap but no veil and therefore no ring at any stage, greyer gills, a more brittle hollowing stem, and a strong preference for pines on light soils.

Tricholoma argyraceum and other members of that grey complex again lack the persistent cottony belt and often yellow slightly on the gills.

Cystoderma species are ringed, but the whole cap and lower stem are coated in a granular, mealy powder, the colours run to ochre and rust, and the gills are adnate rather than deeply notched.

Lepiota and relatives have gills that are entirely free of the stem and a scaly cap over pale flesh, a different construction altogether.

Hebeloma and Cortinarius species that grow with the same willows are separated instantly by the spore print, which is clay-brown or rusty, and by cobwebby rather than cottony veil remains.

A Quick Field Sequence

  1. Confirm willow within a few metres, at any height.
  2. Check the cap is dry, grey and radially fibrillose-scaly.
  3. Check the gills are sinuate, pale and not yellowing when rubbed.
  4. Find the cottony white girdle and the woolly stem surface below it.
  5. Crush flesh and check for a strong floury odour.
  6. Take a print and confirm it is white.

When all six line up, the determination is firm. When the girdle is missing but everything else fits, weathered material is possible, so look for the woolly texture on the lower stem, which usually survives longer than the ring itself.

What is the single most reliable field character for Girdled Knight?
The combination of a dry, grey, radially fibrillose cap with a soft cottony white ring or belt on the upper stem. Nearly all the other grey knights are completely ringless, so a persistent woolly girdle on an otherwise typical grey Tricholoma is a strong lead, especially when the lower stem is also finely woolly below the ring.
Which trees does it grow with, and does it ever occur without them?
It forms ectomycorrhizal partnerships with willows, most often creeping willow, grey willow and goat willow. It is not known to fruit away from Salix roots, so if no willow is present within rooting distance, the identification should be reconsidered. The willow can be a low creeping shrub rather than a tree, which is why dune slacks and damp pit margins are such productive ground.

Watch the gills. Tricholoma scalpturatum stains distinctly yellow with age and where handled, and its veil leaves only a transient fibrous zone. Girdled Knight keeps white to cream gills without a yellow flush and carries a more persistent cottony girdle, and it is confined to willow rather than the broad range of hosts scalpturatum uses.
What season and ground conditions favour fruiting?
Late summer through late autumn, usually a week or so after heavy rain while nights remain frost-free. It favours damp, open, low-nutrient mineral ground such as calcareous sand, dune slacks, gravel workings and disturbed track edges, where willow scrub is establishing and the litter layer is thin.
