Golden Cup Identification Guide
A brilliant orange spring cup fungus of montane conifer duff whose exterior bruises and ages to a distinctive olive- or blue-green. Learning to read that colour shift is the whole identification.
The moment you spot it
You are almost always standing in a coniferous forest in early spring, somewhere the snow has only just pulled back. The ground is a matted brown carpet of spruce and fir needles, the duff is saturated, and there are still dirty white drifts under the denser trees. Scattered across that brown, sometimes half-buried in it, are little splashes of hot orange, roughly the size of a thumbnail up to about the size of a walnut shell. From a standing height they read as bits of dropped orange peel or plastic. When you crouch, they resolve into shallow, irregular cups with wavy, split, folded margins, sitting flush with the litter rather than perched on a stalk.
Golden Cup is an ascomycete, not a gilled mushroom, and the recognition logic is completely different. There is no cap, no stipe worth the name, and no gills. What you are reading instead is the geometry of the cup, the contrast between its two surfaces, and above all what happens to the colour when the fungus is handled or gets old.
Reading the fruitbody, step by step
Overall form. Fruitbodies are 1 to 4 cm across, cup- or saucer-shaped at first, then expanding, flattening and splitting irregularly at the margin so mature ones look like crumpled shallow bowls or fragments of peel. Many are lopsided. They often occur gregariously, dozens over a few square metres, sometimes almost touching.
The inner surface (hymenium). This is the spore-bearing face and it is the brightest part: a saturated egg-yolk to orange, smooth, faintly waxy in appearance, without veins, wrinkles or hairs.
The outer surface. Paler orange to yellowish, minutely downy or almost smooth. This is where the diagnostic character lives. With age, on bruising, near the margin, and wherever a finger or a passing animal has rubbed it, the outer surface develops olive-green to grey-green or even bluish-green discolouration. Old fruitbodies can be more green than orange. If you press a fresh margin firmly with a fingertip and come back to it after a few minutes, that dulled green tone is usually beginning to appear.
Base and attachment. There is essentially no stalk. The cup narrows to a small pinched point or a short rudimentary stub that is buried in the needle litter, often with a tuft of pale mycelium and adhering needle fragments. Lift a fruitbody free and check that base for greening as well.
Flesh. Thin, brittle and waxy, snapping rather than tearing, orange in section and fading toward the outer skin. It exudes no latex or juice. Sectioning a cup vertically with a blade and watching for ten minutes is a genuinely useful field test: the cut edge dulls and takes on that same greenish cast, which no orange spring cup you are likely to confuse it with will do.
Spores and how to take a print
Cup fungi do not drop spores from beneath a cap, so a conventional spore print is awkward, but it can be done. Set a fresh, fully expanded fruitbody hymenium-face-down over a piece of dark card or a glass slide, cover it with a bowl to keep the humidity up, and leave it for several hours. Because asci fire their spores actively, you sometimes get a faint whitish bloom scattered around the cup rather than a clean silhouette beneath it. Breathing gently on a fresh cup, or bringing a chilled one into warm air, can trigger a visible puff of spores.
Under the lens, spores are globose, smooth, colourless and small, roughly 6 to 8 micrometres, without oil drops or ornamentation. That combination of round, smooth and hyaline is worth confirming because several of the look-alikes have distinctly ellipsoid or ornamented spores.
Substrate, season and setting
Golden Cup is a snowmelt fungus of the northern conifer belt: montane and boreal spruce, fir and pine forests across North America, northern Europe and Asia. Fruiting is tightly tied to the receding snowline, so the season is short and moves uphill through the spring. It grows in needle duff and humus, frequently near conifer seed and seedlings, and it is well known ecologically as an agent affecting conifer seed in the soil and in seed storage. If someone hands you a bright orange cup from a hardwood log, or from a lawn in October, the habitat alone argues against this species.
Separating it from look-alikes on form alone
Orange Peel Fungus (Aleuria aurantia). The classic confusion. Aleuria is typically larger, thinner, and more extravagantly peel-like, with a paler, whitish-downy outside and a brilliant orange inside. Critically, it fruits in late summer and autumn on bare compacted soil, path edges, gravelly disturbed ground and roadsides rather than conifer duff, and it never develops the olive-green bruising. Its spores are ellipsoid and coarsely net-ornamented, the opposite of Caloscypha in every respect.
Eyelash cups (Scutellinia species). Also orange discs, but with a fringe of stiff, dark brown to black bristles around the rim, visible with a hand lens. They favour damp rotting wood and wet soil. No greening.
Otidea and Sowerbyella species. Otidea forms split, ear-shaped cups leaning to one side, usually more ochre-brown than orange. Sowerbyella has a distinct short rooting stalk. Neither greens.
Scarlet cups (Sarcoscypha species). Deep blood-red rather than orange-yellow, with a pale outer surface, and they grow attached to buried hardwood sticks, often on the same spring schedule. The attachment to wood, the red tone and the absence of greening separate them cleanly.
Yellow-orange discomycetes on dung or burnt ground. Cheilymenia, Byssonectria and their relatives are much smaller, often hairy, and are anchored to dung or old fire sites rather than conifer duff.
A practical field routine
Note the setting first: conifer, spring, snowmelt line. Confirm the fruitbody has no real stalk and is sitting in needle litter. Check the margin and outer surface for any green tinge; if none is present, deliberately bruise a spot and revisit. Slice one fruitbody and watch the cut edge. Photograph a group in place, and take one specimen to dry, because the greening usually intensifies in a paper bag on the way home and often makes the identification obvious by the time you get to a table.
