How to recognise Clavulinopsis fusiformis in the field: dense fused tufts of bright yellow, pointed, unbranched clubs in old unimproved grassland. Includes shape, colour, spore print and separation from the other yellow club fungi.
The Setting You Will Be Standing In
Golden Spindles announces itself as a burst of pure yellow in short turf, usually in autumn, usually in a place that has never seen a fertiliser bag. The classic ground is old unimproved grassland: sheep-grazed hill pasture, churchyards and cemeteries with a long mowing history, ancient lawns, dune grassland, upland hay meadows and the mossy edges of woodland rides. These sites tend to have a short, mossy, species-rich sward and thin soils. Golden Spindles usually appears alongside the wider grassland fungus community of waxcaps, earthtongues, pinkgills and other coral fungi, so if you are finding those, you are in the right field. The tufts sit low, often part-buried in moss, and from a standing height they look like scattered spills of yellow paint or clumps of dried grass catching the light.
First Impression and Overall Form
Get down to ground level. What you are looking at is a dense, tightly packed bundle of upright, unbranched clubs, all fused together at the base into a single yellowish mass. That fusion is the character that carries the identification. Individual clubs stand roughly 3 to 15 cm tall and 3 to 8 mm thick, and a mature tuft may hold ten, twenty or more of them pressed shoulder to shoulder, some of them leaning outward. There is no cap, no gills and no stem in the ordinary sense: the whole structure is a simple fertile spindle, producing spores over most of its outer surface.
Reading Shape and Surface
Take a single club and examine it end to end. It is spindle-shaped, which means it swells gently through the middle and tapers to both ends, narrowing at the top to a fine point rather than ending in a rounded or clubbed tip. That pointed apex is important. Old clubs almost always show a browning or rust-tinged tip where the tissue has begun to die back, and this browning progresses downward with age while the lower two thirds stay vivid.
The surface is smooth and matt to slightly glossy, without any bloom, powder or hairs. Many clubs are not truly round in cross section: they are flattened, sometimes with a longitudinal groove or channel running down one face, and larger ones may be twisted or slightly forked at the very tip through fusion of neighbours. The colour is a strong, saturated yellow, often described as chrome, egg-yellow or golden, sometimes shading a little more orange at the base of the tuft. It is a pure, cheerful yellow, not the dull ochre of litter clubs nor the orange of some smaller relatives.
Flesh, Interior and Colour Change
Snap a club in half. The flesh is the same yellow as the outside, or slightly paler, and the texture is firm but pliant, tougher than a waxcap and more elastic than a brittlegill. Young clubs are solid or stuffed; older ones commonly become hollow in the middle, sometimes with a narrow tubular cavity running much of their length. Nothing changes colour on breaking, there is no latex or juice, and there is no distinctive odour worth recording. Handling does not stain the fingers.
The Base and How the Tuft Is Built
Ease the moss away at ground level and look at how the clubs meet. In Golden Spindles they are genuinely fused, sharing a common pale yellowish to whitish base that lifts as a single unit. This is different from clubs that merely grow close together and separate cleanly when teased apart. If your clubs come away one at a time from separate points in the soil, you are almost certainly looking at another species. The base is usually clean, occasionally with soil and moss fragments bound to fine white threads running out into the turf.
Taking a Spore Print
Club fungi are awkward to print because there is no cap to invert, but it is straightforward with a little patience. Lay two or three fresh, mature clubs flat on a sheet of dark paper or a glass slide, cover them with an upturned box or bowl to hold humidity, and leave them for four to eight hours. Spores fall from the whole outer surface, so you should get a fine deposit running alongside the length of each club rather than a neat radial pattern. Scrape it together with a blade to judge the mass colour: it is white, showing up clearly on black paper and essentially invisible on white. Any yellow, ochre or brown deposit rules the species out. Under a lens the spores are smooth, broadly ellipsoid to nearly round, roughly 5 to 9 microns, each with a noticeably prominent projecting point where it was attached to the basidium.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
Golden Spindles fruits from late summer through autumn, often continuing until the first hard frosts, and it responds to rain within a week or two. It grows from soil and moss, never from wood, dung or living plants above ground. The soil is typically low in nutrients, and the sward short, mossy and undisturbed for decades. The exact nutritional strategy of the grassland clubs is still debated; they behave broadly as decomposers of grassland organic matter and moss litter, but stable isotope work has suggested some may take carbon in ways closer to a biotrophic relationship with plants. What is not debated is the indicator value: dense populations point to grassland that has escaped ploughing and fertiliser for a very long time, so tread lightly and avoid disturbing the turf while examining a tuft.
Separating It From Look-Alikes on Structure Alone
Clavulinopsis helvola is the commonest confusion. It is smaller, usually under 6 cm, more orange-yellow, and crucially grows scattered or in small loose groups rather than in fused bundles. Under a microscope its spores are strongly warted and spiny, whereas Golden Spindles has smooth ones, and that check settles the matter conclusively.
Clavulinopsis laeticolor is again a solitary or gregarious species, shorter, with a more rounded or blunt tip and no dense clumping.
Clavulinopsis luteoalba is more slender and orange-yellow, and its tip is typically paler, whitish or cream, rather than browning.
Clavulinopsis corniculata shares the grassland habitat and yellow tones but is branched, forking repeatedly into antler-like tips, so it fails the unbranched test immediately.
Clavaria fragilis, the white spindles, has the same fused tufted architecture and similar dimensions but is white to very pale cream throughout, with tips that brown in age.
Calocera viscosa can look superficially similar in colour but grows on conifer wood or buried wood, branches into forks, and has a distinctly gelatinous, rubbery, elastic texture that resists snapping.
Clavariadelphus ligula and its relatives grow in conifer litter, are pale ochre-buff rather than golden, and have flattened, blunt tops with no tapering point.
