Hare's Ear Identification Guide

A practical field walkthrough for Otidea leporina, the tan ear-shaped cup fungus of conifer litter, covering the split apothecium, the scurfy outer surface, spore characters and the other Otidea species it sits beside.

The First Impression

You are unlikely to spot Hare's Ear by scanning at eye level. It turns up when you are already walking slowly through a mature conifer stand, spruce or pine, with your attention on the needle carpet rather than the canopy. What registers first is not a mushroom silhouette at all but a small huddle of tan, pliable flaps standing upright out of the duff, each one curved inward and open along one whole side. From a few paces away a group can pass for curls of dead bark or scattered fragments of dried peel. Crouch down and the illusion breaks: the concave inner face is smooth, evenly coloured and slightly glossy in the way only a hymenium is, and the whole structure is elastic rather than brittle.

Treat the group as the first character. Otidea leporina is a gregarious fungus. Solitary fruitbodies happen, but the normal picture is a cluster of five to twenty, sometimes fused at the base, pushing through needles and hair moss over an area the size of a dinner plate. That habit of arriving in troops, all at roughly the same height and all leaning slightly outward from a shared centre, is worth noting in your field book before you touch anything.

Reading the Apothecium

Pick one fruitbody and read it from the top down. A typical apothecium is 2 to 6 cm tall and 1 to 4 cm wide, taller than broad, and clearly compressed from side to side rather than round in plan. The critical feature is that it is split. The cup never closes into a ring; it is cleft from the rim right down to the base along one side, so that the two edges stand apart or overlap slightly, producing the leaning, ear-like outline the name records. Look at the rim itself: it is entire or very slightly wavy, not toothed or fringed, and it is often incurved so the ear seems to be cupping something.

The inner, fertile surface is a warm ochre to tawny-ochre, sometimes with a faint olive or greyish cast in wet weather and a brighter orange-tan in dry. It is matt to faintly satiny, essentially smooth, with no veins, ribs or blistering, though large specimens may undulate gently. Colour is even from rim to base; there is no distinct paler zone or dark disc. Consistency matters as much as colour. Press the wall between finger and thumb and it feels thin, supple and slightly rubbery, closer to soft leather than to the waxy snap of a Peziza.

The Outer Surface, Base and Flesh

Turn the fruitbody over. The outer surface is the same broad colour family but duller and drier looking, often a shade paler and sometimes with a greyish bloom. Bring a hand lens to it: the surface is minutely scurfy or granular, covered in tiny mealy flecks, quite different from the smooth interior. That contrast between a smooth fertile face and a furfuraceous exterior is a reliable genus-level cue.

Follow the wall downward. It narrows steadily into a short stem-like extension, usually 0.5 to 1.5 cm long, occasionally a little longer where the litter is deep, sometimes with a few shallow longitudinal furrows but never with the sharp branching ribs of a Helvella. Where this base enters the ground it turns whitish and is bound into a felt of white mycelium that glues needles, moss stems and fragments of humus into a plug. Lift a whole fruitbody carefully with a knife rather than pulling; the mycelial plug is part of the identification and tears away if you snatch.

Slice one specimen vertically. The flesh is very thin, often barely a millimetre, pale ochre and translucent, and it is pliant rather than crumbly. There is no latex, no gelatinous layer, and no colour change on cutting. Handled specimens may darken very slightly to a duller brown along the edges, but nothing sudden or dramatic happens, and any guide description promising a bruising reaction points to a different fungus.

Taking and Reading a Spore Deposit

Because this is an ascomycete, spores are fired from the asci rather than dropped passively. You can still take a deposit: set a fresh apothecium fertile-side down over a piece of dark card inside a closed box for two or three hours. The result is a faint whitish to cream bloom, sometimes uneven because the discharge comes in bursts. A quicker field trick is to breathe warm moist air across the inner surface of a fresh specimen and watch for the visible puff of spores released a few seconds later.

Under a microscope the confirmation is clean. Spores are smooth, ellipsoid, colourless and 12 to 16 micrometres long by 6 to 8 wide, and each normally carries two conspicuous oil drops, one toward each end. The paraphyses, the sterile threads between the asci, are slender and distinctly hooked or curved at their tips, which is a classic Otidea signature and separates the genus from cup fungi with straight, swollen or pigment-filled paraphyses. The asci do not turn blue in iodine, unlike those of Peziza.

Substrate, Season and Ecology

Season runs from late summer into autumn, peaking after the first sustained wet spell that follows warm ground. The substrate is needle litter, mossy humus and the shallow organic layer beneath conifers, most consistently Norway spruce and pines, on soils from acidic to roughly neutral. It is not a wood-rotter and you will not find it on stumps or logs.

The ecology explains the distribution. Otidea species form ectomycorrhizal partnerships with their host trees, so the fungus tracks the trees rather than the litter itself. That is why it appears in plantations and mature stands and rarely in isolated garden conifers, and why the same patches produce fruitbodies year after year once you have found them. Mark the spot.

Separating It From Look-alikes

The hard work in Otidea is telling the species apart, and it is done on shape, colour and size alone.

Otidea onotica is the closest confusion. It is larger and more elongated, narrower in proportion, and the inner surface carries an apricot to yellow tone with a distinct pink or salmon flush, while the outer surface is more yellow than brown. It also leans toward broadleaved woodland. Hare's Ear is squatter, plainer and evenly ochre-tan without pink.

Otidea alutacea is bigger, duller and greyer, a leathery clay-brown, with a more expanded and irregular cup that is often split less deeply, and a longer stem-like base. Otidea bufonia and its relatives are much darker, umber to nearly blackish-brown inside, with more contorted outlines. Otidea concinna is a clear yellow throughout and is not easily mistaken once seen.

Outside the genus, Peziza species form regular, symmetrical cups that are not cleft down one side, usually sit flat on the substrate with no stem-like base, and often have a different texture, brittle and waxy rather than pliable. Helvella species that grow in the same habitats are either saddle-shaped or, if cup-like, carry a stout stipe with pronounced branching ribs. Geopora fruitbodies are half-buried, with a hairy brown exterior and a mouth that tears open into lobes rather than a clean lateral split.
