The First Impression
The scene is usually a woodland path edge, a scrubby verge, a birch-fringed car park or a strip of disturbed ground where a track cuts through trees. You come across a troop of solid, pale mushrooms, often arranged in an arc or a broken ring, sometimes dozens of them. The caps are cream to pale clay, low domed, faintly greasy in the wet, with an inrolled margin that gives each fruitbody a slightly clenched, unfinished look. They are firm rather than delicate, they sit low, and they have a distinctly plain, unmarked appearance with no scales, no veil scraps and no bright colours.
Crouch down and put your nose close. There is a strong, clean, sharp smell of radish, sometimes shading toward a raw-vegetable pungency. That smell, combined with pale colours and a dull brown gill maturity, puts you firmly in the genus Hebeloma before you have examined anything closely. Then look at the gill edges of a fresh, well-hydrated specimen in humid weather and you may see the character that makes this species famous: tiny watery droplets beaded along the edges like dew on a spider line.
Reading the Cap
Caps measure 4 to 10 cm across, occasionally more on rich ground. They begin convex with a strongly inrolled margin, then flatten out, usually retaining a low broad umbo. The surface is smooth and bald, without fibrils or scales, and it is slightly viscid to greasy when moist, drying to a matt or faintly shining finish that often picks up leaf fragments and grit while sticky.
Colour is the classic pale Hebeloma scheme: warm ochre, tan or clay-buff at the centre, fading outward to cream or nearly white at the rim, so there is a gentle gradient rather than a sharply two-toned disc. Very young caps can be almost uniformly cream. In wet weather the disc darkens; in drought the whole cap bleaches to ivory.
Examine the margin with a lens. When young it is often minutely downy or faintly frosted with the remains of a very thin veil, but there is never a persistent hanging fringe and never a cobwebby cortina strung to the stipe. If you find a distinct veil leaving a fibrillose band on the stipe, you should move to another species in the genus.
The Gills and the Weeping Character
Gills are crowded, narrow to moderately broad, and adnate to notched, sometimes appearing almost free in old flattened caps. Their colour walks steadily from pale whitish-clay through greyish-buff to a dull cinnamon or snuff-brown at maturity. Note that the brown here is a warm, dull, earthy brown with no purple and no rust-red.
The edges are whitish and, under a lens, minutely uneven or fringed. In humid conditions, and particularly in young specimens, they exude small colourless droplets. As the droplets evaporate they leave behind rusty-brown to dark spots along the gill edge, so an older cap may show a stippled brown-flecked edge even when no liquid is present. Finding those dried spots is often more reliable in practice than catching the droplets themselves, because the beading only shows in the right weather.
Stipe, Base and Flesh
The stipe is 4 to 8 cm long and 1 to 2 cm thick, white to cream, usually more or less cylindrical but often slightly thickened or club-shaped toward the base. It is firm, solid when young, becoming stuffed with a soft pith and finally hollowing in old specimens. Look at the top third with a lens: the surface is covered in fine mealy or floccose white granules, thinning downward into a smoother, faintly fibrillose lower stipe. That pruinose apex is a good Hebeloma cue.
There is no ring and no ring zone. At the base, dig rather than pull. You want to confirm that the stipe simply ends, tapering slightly or swelling slightly, with white mycelial threads binding soil and litter, and that there is no long rooting extension and no volva.
Slice a fruitbody in half lengthwise. The flesh is white and fairly thick in the cap centre, and it does not change colour on exposure. Watch for a full minute; some genera that fruit alongside will flush pink, blue or brown, and a genuinely unchanging white is a positive character here. Check the stipe interior too: it should be white and solid or stuffed, without a distinct hanging flap or plug of tissue in the cavity.
Taking and Reading a Spore Print
Set a mature cap gills-down on white paper under a container for three to six hours. The deposit is dull clay-brown to snuff-brown, sometimes described as milky-coffee or cigar-brown. Compare it against white; the important thing is what it is not. It is not rusty orange-brown, not purple-brown, not black and not white.
Under a microscope, spores are almond-shaped to lemon-shaped, 9 to 13 micrometres long by 5.5 to 7 wide, with a finely warted or roughened surface that becomes clearer in the mounting fluid, and they usually turn reddish-brown in Melzer's reagent. The gill edge is packed with clavate to slightly swollen cheilocystidia, which is why the edge looks fringed and why it can exude droplets.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
This is an ectomycorrhizal fungus, partnering with both broadleaved and coniferous trees. Birch, willow, oak, lime, poplar, hazel, pine and spruce all serve. It is strongly associated with disturbed and compacted ground: path edges, ditch banks, roadsides, recently landscaped areas, and open ground under young plantation trees. The rings and arcs it forms reflect an expanding mycelial front in the soil around its host roots.
Fruiting runs from late summer through autumn, often persisting into the first frosts, and it can be extremely abundant, with large troops recurring in the same spot in successive years. Because it partners readily with pioneer trees and tolerates disturbance, it is one of the commonest woodland-edge fungi in temperate regions.
Separating It From Look-alikes
The genus itself is the main difficulty, and Hebeloma crustuliniforme in the modern narrow sense sits in a complex of very similar pale species. Work through the following on morphology.
Hebeloma mesophaeum is smaller and clearly two-toned, with a dark date-brown disc against a much paler margin, and it carries a distinct fibrillose veil that leaves a band on the stipe. Its gills weep much less reliably.
Hebeloma sinapizans is bigger and coarser with a more strongly rooting, robust stipe; cut it lengthwise and the stipe cavity carries a characteristic downward-pointing plug or tongue of tissue hanging into the hollow, which crustuliniforme lacks.
Hebeloma radicosum is unmistakable once seen: a scaly cap, a real membranous ring on the stipe, a long tapering root, and a powerful sweet almond smell instead of radish.
Hebeloma sacchariolens and its relatives are smaller and smell strongly and sweetly, of burnt sugar or scented soap, and have notably larger spores.
Outside the genus, Inocybe species share the radish smell but almost always have a dry, radially fibrillose or scaly cap, frequently with a sharp umbo and a split margin, and they tend to be more slender. Cortinarius species have a cobwebby cortina when young and give a rusty orange-brown spore print. Agrocybe species have a smoother, more ochre cap, often a ring, and a duller brown print. Any pale mushroom with a white spore print, such as a Clitocybe or Lepista, is excluded by the print alone.
