Honey Waxcap Identification Guide

A practical field routine for recognising Hygrocybe reidii, the small orange-red waxcap of old unimproved grassland, and for telling it apart from the other red and orange waxcaps that share its turf.

The Moment You Spot It

Honey Waxcap announces itself as a small spark of orange-red in short, mossy turf. You will almost always be standing somewhere that has not been ploughed, fertilised or reseeded for decades: an old churchyard, a hill pasture grazed tight by sheep, a lawn that has been mown but never fed, a coastal dune slack, or a grassy bank in an upland valley. The setting matters as much as the mushroom, because waxcaps are creatures of ancient, nutrient-poor grassland and they seldom appear in rich, improved fields.

Crouch down before you touch anything. At a glance the fruit body is 2 to 5 cm across, with a cap that looks slightly greasy or moist, the colour of orange peel deepening to a warm reddish tone at the centre and paling towards the rim. In a good autumn you will find them in scattered troops, often mixed with other waxcaps, earthtongues and small clavarioid clubs, a community that is itself a strong hint you are in the right kind of place.

Working Through the Cap

Start with shape. Young caps are hemispherical to bluntly conical, expanding to convex and finally almost flat, often with a low broad umbo and a margin that becomes wavy or slightly upturned with age. The surface is smooth, faintly greasy when damp but never truly glutinous; you should not be able to leave a slimy film on your fingers. In dry weather the cap becomes silky and matt.

Colour is the character people get wrong. Fresh caps are orange to orange-red or brick-orange, not the pure scarlet of some relatives. As the fruit body ages and dries it fades unevenly, going pale orange-yellow, apricot or almost buff at the margin while the disc holds its warmer tone. Look for faint translucent striations at the rim in wet weather, showing the gill positions through the thin cap flesh.

Bring the cap close to your nose and warm it briefly between your fingers. A distinctly sweet, honeyed odour is the single most useful field character of this species, and it becomes far more obvious as the fruit body starts to dry or when a bruised piece is left in a pot for a few minutes. Some collections release it only faintly when perfectly fresh, so do not dismiss the species if you smell nothing on the first sniff.

Reading the Gills

Waxcap gills have a texture you can learn by feel. Rub one between finger and thumb: it should feel thick, soft and waxy, almost greasy, and it will smear rather than crumble. In this species the gills are moderately distant, broad and rather thick, and they are attached to the stem either broadly adnate or with a short decurrent tooth running a little way down it. Interveining is often visible between the gills when you tilt the cap into the light.

Gill colour runs from pale orange or yellow-orange in youth to a deeper orange with age, usually a shade or two lighter than the cap. The edges stay even and concolorous. Count the pattern of full-length gills against the shorter intermediate ones; waxcaps typically have several tiers of these lamellulae, which contributes to the neat radial fan you see from below.

Stipe, Base and Flesh

The stipe is 3 to 6 cm long and 3 to 8 mm thick, cylindrical or slightly flattened, sometimes tapering or curved at the base. It is dry to slightly moist, never viscid, smooth, and coloured much like the cap: orange to orange-yellow, usually paler and often whitish right at the base where it meets the soil. There is no ring and no volva, and no fibrous or scurfy covering, just a smooth, clean, waxy-looking stalk.

Cut the fruit body lengthwise. The flesh is thin, soft and pale orange, watery in the cap and hollowing in the stem as it matures. Nothing dramatic happens on cutting: there is no milk, no latex, and no blackening or blueing. That absence of colour change is diagnostic in its own right, since several grassland waxcaps do change colour when handled or with age.

Taking and Reading a Spore Print

Waxcaps drop spores freely, so a print is quick. Cut the stipe flush with the gills, set the cap gill-side down on a piece of dark paper or on glass over a dark background, cover it with an upturned cup to keep humidity in, and leave it for two to four hours. Honey Waxcap gives a white print. Against dark paper this reads as a clean, chalky deposit with no cream, pink or brown tint. Under the microscope the spores are smooth, thin-walled and broadly ellipsoid, roughly 7 to 9 by 4 to 5 micrometres, and the hymenium is built from very long, parallel basidia, another family trait.

A white print rules out a great many small orange agarics in grassland at a stroke, so it is worth doing even when you are fairly confident.

Substrate and Season

This is a grassland species that fruits from soil and moss, not from wood or dung. It favours short, unimproved, moss-rich turf on neutral to slightly acid soils, and it is a regular member of the waxcap grassland assemblage in churchyards, old lawns, upland pasture and coastal grassland. The main season is autumn, from late summer through to the first hard frosts, with fruiting triggered by prolonged damp weather.

Because the mycelium is long-lived and slow to recover from disturbance, the same patches produce fruit bodies year after year. Mark a site and return to it; repeat visits across a season are the fastest way to learn how variable the colour of a single population can be.

Sorting Out the Look-Alikes

Scarlet Waxcap (Hygrocybe coccinea) is the closest confusion. Its cap is a truer blood-scarlet rather than orange-red, the gills are broadly adnate with a decurrent tooth and are usually more strongly interveined, and it has no honeyed odour. Its stipe tends to be flattened and slightly more brittle.

Splendid Waxcap (Hygrocybe splendidissima) shares the sweet odour on drying but is a much larger, stouter fungus, with a cap often 5 to 10 cm across, a thicker stipe, and a deep blood-red colour fading to orange-yellow. Size and build separate them reliably.

Crimson Waxcap (Hygrocybe punicea) is larger again, with a viscid deep-red cap, a conspicuously fibrous, streaky stipe that is often white at the base, and yellowish gills. The fibrillose stipe is the giveaway.

Vermilion Waxcap (Hygrocybe miniata) is small and orange-red like Honey Waxcap but has a dry cap that is minutely scurfy or scaly at the centre under a hand lens, and it favours more acid, heathy ground.

Butter Waxcap (Hygrocybe ceracea) and the sticky Hygrocybe glutinipes are yellower and, in the latter case, have a distinctly slimy stipe you can feel at once.

Hygrocybe quieta is orange throughout but smells oily rather than sweet, and its gills are more crowded and orange-buff.
