The Ground You Search

This is a fungus of poor, sandy, free-draining soil under pines. Coastal dune systems with scattered Scots or maritime pine, sandy heathland plantations, inland dune ridges and pine belts on old blown sand are the classic places, and the season runs late: October into December in much of its range, often after the main autumn flush has finished.

A characteristic of the species is that it fruits deep. More often than not you do not see a mushroom at all; you see a heave in the sand and needle litter, a crack, a small dome pushing the surface up. Experienced searchers scan for disturbance in the litter rather than for caps. When you clear the sand away, the stem is frequently longer below ground than above it, and the whole fruit body comes out gritty.

The Cap

Diameter is usually 5 to 12 cm. The shape is convex at first, with a strongly inrolled margin, and flattens with age, generally keeping a low broad umbo.

Colour is yellow with an olive cast, browner or ochre-brown towards the centre, and the disc often carries fine appressed reddish-brown fibrils or small flattened scales that make it look slightly darker and rougher than the outer part. The margin stays even and unstriated.

The surface is the character people underrate: it is distinctly viscid or greasy when moist, drying to a shine, and because the fungus grows in sand, the cap almost always has grains of sand and pine needles glued to it. A gritty yellow cap in dune pines is a strong first indication.

Gills: Look for the Notch

Tricholoma is a genus defined by gill attachment, so this step is not optional. Slice a fruit body vertically from cap centre to stem base and look at how the gill meets the stem. In Tricholoma the gill runs inward, dips sharply into a notch just before the stem and then stops, leaving a small scoop or bite taken out of the lower gill edge. The term is emarginate or sinuate. It is easy to see in section and almost impossible to judge from below.

The gills of this species are crowded, moderately broad, and a clear sulphur to lemon yellow, and they hold that colour without spotting or discolouring as they age. The edges are even, not serrated or fringed. There is no partial veil covering them at any stage.

Stem and Base

The stem is 4 to 9 cm long and 1 to 2.5 cm thick, cylindrical or slightly thickened downward, solid and firm, and pale yellow to yellowish-white with a fine fibrillose surface. Firmness is worth noting: this is a dense, heavy fungus that does not feel hollow or fragile.

Go through the negatives. There is no ring. There is no cobwebby cortina between margin and stem in young material. There is no volva, no sac and no abrupt marginate bulb. The base simply tapers or stays cylindrical and is usually stained and packed with sand.

Flesh and Colour Change

Cut the fruit body in half. The flesh is thick, firm and white, sometimes pale yellow immediately under the cap cuticle and in the outer stem, and it does not change appreciably on exposure. There is no bluing, no reddening, no blackening, no latex. At most a faint yellowing develops slowly on the cut face.

The smell is faint, at most mealy or slightly farinaceous, and it is usually easier to detect on a broken stem than on the cap. Absence of a strong smell is itself informative here, because the main yellow confusion species has an obvious one.

Spore Print

The cap is pale and the gills are yellow, so people assume a coloured print and skip the step. Do not. Cut the cap free of the stem, lay it gills-down on dark card or on a slide over dark paper, since a white deposit is invisible on white paper, cover it with a bowl and leave four to eight hours.

The print is white, occasionally with the faintest cream cast. It is never pink, never rusty, never brown. That single result eliminates the entire yellow-brown web-cap group and the pink-spored genera in one move. Under the microscope the spores are small, smooth, ellipsoid and not amyloid.

Habitat and Association

Tricholoma equestre is ectomycorrhizal, partnering pines above all, with Scots pine and maritime pine the usual hosts, and there are records with spruce. The soil requirement is consistent: nutrient-poor, sandy, sharply drained ground, whether that is a coastal dune slack, a stabilised dune ridge planted with pine, or a sandy inland plantation.

Fruiting is late in the season, sometimes continuing to the first frosts, and it often occurs in loose troops, arcs or partial rings following the root spread of a host tree. Where you find one buried dome, sweep the litter in a circle around it; there are usually more.

Separating the Look-Alikes

Tricholoma sulphureum is the main yellow rival. It is uniformly bright sulphur-yellow throughout, including cap, stem and flesh, its gills are noticeably thick and widely spaced rather than crowded, and it has a strong and unmistakable smell of coal gas or illuminating gas. It also favours broadleaf woodland, especially oak and beech, rather than sandy pines. Gill spacing plus smell resolves it in seconds.

Tricholoma portentosum shares the sandy pine habitat and the viscid cap, but its cap is grey to grey-violet with dark radiating fibrils, and its gills are white at first, taking on a yellowish flush only near the edges and with age. Cap colour splits them cleanly.

Tricholoma frondosae and the other segregates of the equestre complex look extremely similar but are associated with broadleaf trees such as aspen and poplar, or have a browner disc and thinner flesh. Habitat and host tree are the practical separators.

Tricholoma joachimii and other dune species tend to be browner and less evenly yellow.

Cortinarius species, including several yellowish ones on sandy ground, show a cobwebby veil between the cap margin and the stem when young, gills that discolour rusty with age, and a rusty-brown spore print. The print alone is conclusive.

Gymnopilus and Phaeolepiota are rusty-spored and usually ringed, and Gymnopilus grows on wood.

Yellow Russula species such as Russula claroflava have brittle flesh that snaps like chalk, gills that are attached without a notch, and a crumbly stem with no fibrous grain.

Amanita gemmata has a pale yellow cap but white gills, a ring, and a bulbous base with volval tissue.

The Working Combination

How do I separate it from Tricholoma sulphureum?
Gill spacing, colour distribution and smell. Sulphureum is uniformly bright sulphur-yellow through cap, stem and flesh, its gills are thick and distinctly widely spaced, and it smells strongly of coal gas.
