A vivid yellow-green crustose lichen whose black-rimmed patches meet like countries on a map, painting granite and slate in exposed mountain country.
Overview
The Map Lichen is one of the most instantly recognisable crustose lichens in the world. Its thallus is a tightly bonded crust of bright yellow-green tiles (areoles) set on and separated by a jet-black fungal prothallus, so that neighbouring colonies meet along dark lines that look uncannily like inked borders on an atlas page.
Like all lichens, it is not a single organism but a partnership: a fungus in the family Rhizocarpaceae housing a green algal photobiont within its tissue. The genus Rhizocarpon contains many similar yellow and grey species, and R. geographicum is best treated as the core of a species complex — several closely allied taxa share the same map-like architecture and are separated only under a microscope.
The lichen is famous among geologists for lichenometry: because it expands at a slow, roughly measurable rate on stable rock, the diameter of the largest colonies has long been used to estimate how long a boulder field, moraine or rockfall surface has been exposed. Colonies on old alpine rock can be centuries old.
How to identify it
Thallus
A tightly appressed crust, never leafy or free at the edges, typically forming rounded patches from a few centimetres to tens of centimetres across. The colour is a distinctive acid or sulphur yellow-green, sometimes duller olive in shaded sites. The surface is divided into small angular areoles, each a fraction of a millimetre to about 1 mm wide, separated by fine cracks.
Prothallus and margins
The defining feature is the black prothallus — a sterile fungal layer that shows between the areoles and, more obviously, as a black border around the whole colony. Where two colonies grow into one another, they are separated by a crisp black line, which is what produces the map effect.
Apothecia
The fruiting bodies are black, angular to rounded discs (apothecia) sunk among the areoles and flush with the surface, often mistaken for gaps in the crust. They are usually flat with a thin black rim, and are present on most mature colonies. Ascospores are dark and multi-celled, best seen microscopically.
Substrate reaction
The crust is inseparable from its rock — it cannot be lifted off intact. Colonies are extremely hard and slow-growing, and old rock faces can carry a mosaic of dozens of individuals of different ages.
Where and when it grows
Map Lichen colonises hard, acidic, silica-rich rock: granite, gneiss, quartzite, schist and slate. It avoids limestone and other calcareous stone. Typical sites are exposed summit rocks, boulder fields, glacial moraines, drystone walls, roadside cuttings and any long-undisturbed rock surface with good light and clean air.
It is a cool-climate specialist with a vast distribution — circumpolar in the Arctic and boreal zones, and descending into temperate mountain ranges worldwide, including the Rockies, Appalachians, Alps, Scandinavian fells, Scottish Highlands and comparable uplands in the southern hemisphere. Being perennial and evergreen, it is visible in every season, brightening most when wet.
Ecological role
The fungal partner builds the crust and anchors it to the mineral surface, while the green algal partner photosynthesises within a thin internal layer, supplying sugars. The lichen absorbs water and nutrients directly from rain, mist and dust, which makes it a pioneer able to colonise bare rock where no plant can root.
Growth is famously slow — often well under a millimetre of radial expansion per year — so established colonies represent decades or centuries of continuous occupation. Over long timescales the lichen contributes to biological weathering, etching and loosening the rock surface and helping generate the first thin skims of mineral soil. It is also sensitive to air pollution, so rich Map Lichen cover generally indicates clean upland air.
Similar species
Other yellow Rhizocarpon species, such as R. lecanorinum, share the yellow areoles and black prothallus; in R. lecanorinum the areoles are horseshoe-shaped and wrap around the apothecia, whereas in R. geographicum the areoles are angular and the apothecia sit between them. Grey members of the genus (for example R. petraeum) have the same black prothallus but a grey to whitish crust rather than yellow-green.
Acarospora species on the same rocks form yellow-brown to yellowish crusts but lack the strong black prothallus and have a more scattered, scale-like, often shinier surface. Lecidea and Porpidia crusts are grey to white with black discs and never show the yellow-green pigment. Candelariella on rock is a warmer egg-yolk yellow, granular rather than tiled, and has no black border between colonies.
