Meadow Coral Identification Guide
A golden-yellow, repeatedly forked clavarioid fungus of old mossy turf, recognised by its antler-like branching and blunt tips. This guide covers branch architecture, colour, base and spore print, plus the unbranched and woodland corals it is most often confused with.
The Setting and the First Impression
Meadow coral is a grassland fungus, and finding it usually means you are already in the right kind of place: a short-cropped, unimproved, nutrient-poor sward. Think old churchyards, ancient pasture on thin soil, mossy lawns that have never been fed, dune grassland, upland sheep-grazed turf. In that setting the fungus reads as a small golden shrub, three to eight centimetres tall, sitting in moss with its branches held stiffly upright.
At a distance and from standing height it can be mistaken for a yellow waxcap, or for a scatter of dead grass stems catching the light. What resolves it is the branching. Kneel down and the structure becomes obvious: a short common stalk rising from the turf and dividing again and again into paired arms, spreading like miniature antlers. That repeated forking is the character the species is built around, and it is visible without any equipment at all.
Reading the Architecture
Work from the ground upward. There is a short, often slightly paler stalk at the base, rarely more than a centimetre long and frequently obscured by moss. From that the fruit body divides, and the divisions are predominantly dichotomous: one arm splits into two, those two split again, and so on for two to four orders of branching. Forks are typically at wide angles rather than tight and parallel, which gives the crown an open, spreading, antler-like profile rather than the dense cauliflower mass of the larger woodland corals.
The branches themselves are round in section, smooth, and two to four millimetres thick, tapering only slightly. Look carefully at the tips. In this species they are characteristically blunt, rounded or shortly crown-like, sometimes with a final small fork; they are not drawn out into fine sharp points. Blunt, forked tips on a branched yellow coral in turf is one of the most efficient field shortcuts available.
The overall crown is usually two to five centimetres across, and fruit bodies grow singly, in small groups or in loose clusters where several arise from a shared mycelial patch. Neighbouring fruit bodies do not fuse into a common fleshy base.
Colour and How It Changes
Fresh material is bright golden yellow to warm ochre-yellow, sometimes with a faint orange or buff cast in the upper branches. The colour is even along the branches, without the strong tip-to-base gradient seen in some relatives.
Two colour details are worth checking deliberately. First, the extreme base is frequently whitish and finely downy or tomentose where it meets the moss and soil, and this pale downy foot contrasts with the yellow above it. Second, older or handled fruit bodies commonly develop dull brownish or olive-brown discolouration, particularly at the tips and along bruised branches. Weathered specimens can look distinctly drab, so judge the species from the freshest individuals in a colony.
Flesh, Texture and Odour
Snap a branch across. The flesh is concolorous or slightly paler than the surface, fairly brittle yet with a degree of flexibility, and solid rather than hollow. There is no gelatinous layer, no rubbery elasticity, and no latex. The break is clean and dryish.
Many collections have a faint farinaceous odour, most noticeable when several fruit bodies are crushed together in a container. It is a supporting character rather than a decisive one, since it is inconsistent and easily missed in cold weather.
Taking and Reading a Spore Print
Clavarioid fungi produce spores over the whole outer surface of the branches, so there are no gills to invert. The practical method is to lay two or three whole fruit bodies horizontally on a sheet of dark card, cover them with a bowl or an upturned pot to still the air, and leave them for six to twelve hours in a cool place. Spores fall as a faint ghost outline along the underside of each branch, which is exactly why dark card is essential.
The print is white to very pale cream. Under a microscope the spores are more or less globose, smooth, colourless and equipped with a prominent pointed apiculus at the attachment point. Spore shape is the standard way to confirm placement in Clavulinopsis, and it also separates the group from the woodland genus Ramaria, whose spores are ornamented and whose prints are distinctly ochre to yellow-brown.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
Meadow coral fruits from soil among mosses and short grasses, never from wood, and it is closely associated with long-established, unfertilised turf. It is one of the members of the grassland fungus assemblage that also includes waxcaps, earthtongues, pink-gilled Entoloma species and other clavarioid fungi, and the presence of several of these together is a strong indicator of a sward that has not been ploughed, reseeded or fertilised for decades.
The nutritional strategy of Clavulinopsis is still debated. These fungi are not straightforward wood or litter decomposers, and stable isotope work has suggested some form of biotrophic association, possibly involving mosses or plant roots, rather than simple saprotrophy. In practical terms this is why the species does not colonise garden beds, mulch or recently disturbed ground.
Season runs from late summer through autumn and, in mild oceanic climates, into early winter. Fruiting follows sustained rain on cool ground and can persist for several weeks in the same spot. Colonies reappear in the same patches of turf year after year, so a mapped site remains useful.
Separating the Closest Look-alikes
Clavulinopsis fusiformis. Bright yellow and grassland-dwelling, but the fruit bodies are unbranched spindles, pointed at the tip, growing in dense fused tufts from a common base. If you can see individual pointed clubs pressed together rather than true forks, it is this species.
Clavulinopsis helvola and Clavulinopsis laeticolor. Both are simple, unbranched clubs, yellow to apricot-orange, usually growing singly or in small scattered groups. Absence of branching is the whole distinction, so check several fruit bodies rather than one, since occasional meadow coral individuals can be sparsely divided.
Clavulinopsis umbrinella. Also branched and also in old grassland, but the colour is greyish white, buff or drab brown rather than golden yellow.
Ramariopsis crocea and Ramariopsis kunzei. Ramariopsis crocea is smaller, more delicate and orange-toned with finer branches; Ramariopsis kunzei is white to ivory with a similar branching habit. Both are more fragile in the hand than meadow coral.
Ramaria species. These are the bulky woodland corals, generally much larger, arising from a thick fleshy basal trunk, and growing on woodland soil or wood rather than in turf. Their spore print is ochre to yellow-brown and their spores are warted or striate under the microscope.
Calocera viscosa. Superficially a forked yellow-orange coral, but it grows on buried conifer wood, and the texture is decisive: gelatinous, rubbery and elastic, so a branch bends and pulls rather than snapping cleanly. Its base is usually rooting into rotten wood.
Clavaria and Clavulina species. Clavulina coralloides is white to greyish with sharply divided crested tips; Clavaria species in grassland are typically unbranched and white, grey or violet.
