Meadow Waxcap Identification Guide
A thick-fleshed apricot-buff waxcap of old grassland with broad, waxy, strongly decurrent gills and a dry tapering stipe. This guide covers the cap, the gill attachment, the spore print and the pale and orange waxcaps and chanterelle-like fungi it is confused with.
First Impression and the Grassland Setting
Meadow waxcap turns up in the same habitats as the rest of the waxcap assemblage: short, unimproved, unfertilised turf. Ancient pasture, churchyards, upland sheep grazings, old lawns and mossy dune grassland are the classic settings, often alongside yellow coral fungi, earthtongues and pink-gilled Entoloma species. It also strays into grassy woodland rides and open woodland edges more readily than most of its relatives.
In the field it is one of the larger and sturdier waxcaps, and the initial impression is of a solid, matt, apricot to pale orange-buff mushroom with a slightly clumsy, irregular outline. Where many waxcaps are glossy, brittle and jewel-coloured, this one is dry, soft-toned and thick-fleshed. Turn one over and the gills settle it: broad, widely spaced, pale, and running noticeably down the stipe.
Reading the Cap
The cap is typically 3 to 8 cm across, occasionally reaching 10 cm on good ground, which makes it substantially bigger than most grassland waxcaps. It starts convex, expands to flat, and often finishes shallowly depressed with a low broad umbo in the centre.
The surface is dry to very slightly greasy in wet weather, never truly viscid or slimy, and it has a distinctly matt, almost suede-like finish. Colour ranges from warm apricot and pale orange through salmon-buff to a dull tan, generally fading toward the margin and paler overall in exposed sites.
Two shape details help. First, the margin is often irregularly wavy, lobed or split rather than neatly circular, and older caps frequently develop radial cracks running inward from the edge. Second, the cap flesh is unusually thick for a waxcap, especially at the centre, and this gives the fruit body a heavy, substantial feel in the hand.
The Gills
Waxcap gills are the family signature and this species shows them well. They are thick, broad and waxy in texture, so rubbing one between finger and thumb gives a soft, slightly greasy smear rather than a papery tear.
Spacing is distant: the gills are clearly separated, with obvious gaps between them, and short intermediate gills are present. Colour is paler than the cap, cream to pale buff or very pale apricot, and it does not darken with age. Many collections show conspicuous veins or cross-connections between the gills on the underside of the cap, especially near the stipe, which is worth checking with a lens.
Attachment is the decisive character: the gills are strongly decurrent, running well down the stipe rather than stopping at it. Look at the join in profile and the gills should sweep continuously from the cap onto the stem. Combine that with the waxy texture and the wide spacing and you have the core of the identification.
Stipe, Base and Flesh
The stipe is 3 to 8 cm long and 1 to 2 cm thick, usually shorter and stouter in exposed turf. It tapers downward, often quite markedly, ending in a narrowed base with no bulb, no volva and no ring. The surface is dry and smooth to slightly fibrillose, and it is decidedly not slimy: several other waxcaps have glutinous stems and this one does not.
Stipe colour is whitish to pale buff, generally paler than the cap and sometimes almost white at the base. The flesh is white to very pale apricot, thick, firm and solid when young, becoming softer and sometimes stuffed or hollowed in the stipe with age.
Cut a fruit body lengthwise and watch it. There is no colour change of note: no blackening, no reddening, no blueing, and no latex. That negative result is itself useful, because some waxcaps blacken conspicuously when bruised or aged. The odour is faint and unremarkable in fresh material, sometimes very slightly farinaceous in a closed container.
Taking and Reading a Spore Print
Cut the stipe off flush with the gills, set the cap gills-down on dark card with a strip of white paper beneath one edge, cover it with a bowl and leave it four to eight hours. Because the gills are thick and distant, the print is often patchy rather than a solid disc, and dark card makes the white deposit readable.
The print is white. That immediately rules out the pink-spored Entoloma species and the brown-spored Clitocybe relatives that share the same turf, and it is one of the cheapest confirmations you can run.
Under the microscope, the spores are smooth, colourless, ellipsoid and typically 5 to 8 by 4 to 5 micrometres. The gill trama is a further check for anyone with a microscope: in Cuphophyllus the hyphae of the gill tissue are interwoven rather than arranged in parallel, which distinguishes the genus from Hygrocybe in the strict sense.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
Fruit bodies arise from soil among short grasses and mosses, never from wood. The species is one of the indicator fungi of long-established, unfertilised grassland: swards that have not been ploughed, reseeded or dosed with fertiliser for many decades. Its presence, particularly alongside several other waxcaps, points to a grassland of high conservation interest.
The biology of waxcaps remains partly unresolved. They are not straightforward litter decomposers, and isotopic and molecular evidence points to some form of biotrophic relationship, possibly with mosses or with plant roots, rather than simple saprotrophy. This explains the tight fidelity to stable old turf and the failure of these fungi to colonise recently disturbed or fertilised ground.
Season runs from late summer through autumn into early winter, later than most grassland agarics, and fruiting can continue until hard frosts. Sites are persistent: the same patches of sward produce year after year.
Separating the Closest Look-alikes
Cuphophyllus virgineus. Same genus, same decurrent waxy gills and same habitat, but the entire fruit body is white to ivory and generally smaller and more slender. Pale, washed-out meadow waxcaps in exposed turf can approach it, so check cap thickness and any residual apricot tone at the disc.
Cuphophyllus flavipes and Cuphophyllus colemannianus. Both are grassland Cuphophyllus with decurrent gills. Cuphophyllus flavipes has grey to grey-brown tones on the cap with a yellow-tinted stipe base; Cuphophyllus colemannianus is smaller, browner and duller, with a more sharply conical young cap.
Hygrocybe species in the strict sense. Species such as Hygrocybe punicea, Hygrocybe coccinea and Hygrocybe conica are far brighter in colour, frequently have viscid or glutinous caps and stems, and typically have adnate or narrowly adnexed gills rather than strongly decurrent ones. Hygrocybe conica blackens dramatically on handling and with age, which the meadow waxcap never does.
Hygrophorus nemoreus. Closely similar in colour and stature but a woodland fungus of oak and beech rather than turf. Its cap surface is more fibrillose and streaky, its odour is markedly farinaceous, and the habitat difference is usually decisive.
Cantharellus species. Chanterelles share the apricot colouring and the decurrent look, but they have blunt, forking, vein-like ridges rather than true blade-like gills. Run a fingernail across the underside: waxcap gills are discrete plates that can be separated individually, whereas chanterelle ridges are shallow folds continuous with the cap flesh.
Clitocybe and Ampulloclitocybe species. Also decurrent-gilled and grassland-capable, but the gills are thin, crowded and not waxy, the flesh lacks the soft greasy quality, and many have a strong farinaceous or sweetish odour.
Lactarius species. Decurrent gills but they bleed a latex when the gill tissue is cut. A quick nick across the gills with a knife blade settles it.
