Oakbug Milkcap Identification Guide

A dull red-brown milkcap found only under oaks, with faint watery zones, unchanging white milk and a distinctive oily, bedbug-like smell. This guide covers the full field sequence and the milk reactions that separate it from other oak milkcaps.

First Impressions and the Setting

Lactarius quietus is one of the most abundant mushrooms of oak woodland, and it is almost always the first milkcap a beginner meets there. The setting is straightforward: under oak, and only under oak, in woodland, wood-pasture, parkland, hedgerows and even a single oak on a village green. It fruits in the moss, short grass and leaf litter beneath the canopy, usually in numbers rather than singly.

The visual first impression is unremarkable, which is part of the problem. You see a medium-sized, dull rufous-brown, matt cap with a vaguely banded look, on a stem of similar colour. What is not unremarkable is the smell, which often arrives before you have finished kneeling down: oily, sweetish and slightly stale, the odour traditionally described as bedbugs or warm machine oil. Learning that smell is the fastest route to recognising this species for life.

Reading the Cap

Caps are 4-9 cm and occasionally 11 cm. They begin convex with an inrolled margin, flatten out, and become slightly depressed at the centre, sometimes retaining a small low umbo.

Feel the surface. It is dry to very slightly greasy in wet weather, never slimy or glutinous, and it is matt rather than shiny, sometimes faintly velvety towards the margin. The colour is dull reddish-brown, liver-brown, dull cinnamon or greyish-brown, and it is rarely bright. Look for the zoning: vague, darker, watery-looking concentric bands and blotches that give the cap a faintly ringed appearance. They are subtle and can be hard to see on a dry cap, but tilting the cap in the light usually brings them out. The margin is even at first, becoming wavy with age.

Gills and the Milk Test

Gills are adnate to slightly decurrent, crowded, narrow and often forking near the stem. They are pale cream at first, then pinkish-buff with an ochre-flesh flush, and they spot rusty or brownish where bruised or where milk has dried.

Now do the milk test properly, because it carries most of the weight in this genus. Choose a young, damp specimen; dry caps and old ones give little or nothing. Draw a clean blade across the gills and watch the beads that form.

The milk of Oakbug Milkcap is white to faintly creamy, usually only moderately abundant, and unchanging. Watch a drop on the blade for a full minute: no yellow, no lilac, no orange. Then wipe milk onto a white cotton handkerchief or white paper and check it again at fifteen and thirty minutes. It dries to a plain cream or pale brownish film without turning bright sulphur-yellow. That patient double-check is exactly what separates it from the commonest oak look-alike.

Stipe, Base and Flesh

The stem is 4-8 cm long and 1-2 cm thick, cylindrical or slightly swollen in the middle and often narrowing towards the base. It is dry, smooth or with faint shallow depressions, and coloured like the cap or a shade darker.

Two details are worth attending to. First, the base is usually distinctly darker, a deeper red-brown or almost chestnut, so the stem grades downward in colour. Second, there is frequently a narrow pale, almost whitish band at the very apex just under the gills. Together they give the stem a slightly two-toned look that is a genuine field character.

Cut the stem lengthways. It is stuffed when young and becomes hollow with a single wide chamber, and it snaps with the clean chalky fracture typical of the Russulaceae rather than tearing into fibres. The flesh is whitish to pale buff, turning pale brown in the stem base, and brittle and granular throughout. There is no dramatic colour change on cutting beyond a slow brownish tinge in old material.

Bag a specimen for a few minutes and open it under your nose: the oily, sweetish, faintly stale smell concentrates and is unmistakable. It also persists in dried collections for years.

Taking and Reading a Spore Print

The caps hold moisture well and print easily. Cut the stem flush with the gills, place the cap gill-side down on white paper or glass, cover it to stop it drying, and leave it overnight.

The deposit is pale cream with an ochre or buff tint. Scrape it into a thick line with a blade before judging the shade, because a thin dusting reads far whiter than the true colour, and compare it in daylight against a genuinely white sheet. Under a microscope the spores are broadly ellipsoid, about 7-9 by 6.5-7.5 micrometres, ornamented with low ridges and warts that form a partial network, and the ornament stains blue-black in Melzer's reagent.

Substrate, Season and Ecology

Oakbug Milkcap is ectomycorrhizal and effectively restricted to Quercus, forming sheaths around the fine roots of both native and planted oaks. It appears in leaf litter, moss and short turf under the canopy and out to the drip line, and it is one of the species that colonises even isolated urban and parkland oaks.

Fruiting runs from July to November, peaking in early to mid autumn, often in dozens. Because it is a root partner rather than a wood decayer, the tree is part of the determination: if you think you have found it under beech, pine or birch, check the canopy again before accepting the name.

Separating It From Look-Alikes

Lactarius chrysorrheus is the main trap because it also grows under oak. Its cap is paler, a pinkish-buff to pale salmon, usually with clearer concentric zoning, and its white milk turns bright sulphur-yellow on the gills within about thirty seconds. Always wait for that reaction before committing.

Lactarius subdulcis is a beech associate with a brighter, more uniform cinnamon to red-brown cap without watery zones, milk that is white and unchanging, no oily smell, and no darkening at the stem base.

Lactarius serifluus shares a strong bug-like smell but its milk is watery, whey-like and almost colourless rather than white, and it is scanty.

Lactarius camphoratus is darker and more red-brown, with a strong sweet aromatic smell that intensifies as the specimen dries, and a more rounded stem base.

Lactarius hepaticus grows under pine, is darker liver-brown, and its white milk turns yellow on a white cloth after a few minutes.

Lactarius rufus grows under pine and birch, is a brighter brick-red, often with a distinct pointed umbo, and has no oily smell.

Lactarius fulvissimus and L. decipiens are smaller and brighter orange-tan, and L. decipiens has its own distinctive green, ivy-leaf-like odour.

Russula species in the same litter are eliminated instantly: cut the gills and no milk appears at all.
