Orange Birch Bolete Identification Guide

Working through a tall orange-capped bolete under birch, using the black stipe scabers, the overhanging cap skin, the wine-grey to black flesh change and the blue-green stipe base to arrive at Leccinum versipelle.

First impression, and the setting

Late summer or autumn, a damp birch wood, a heathy common with scattered birch, or a mossy hollow on the edge of a plantation, and there in the grass and moss stands a tall bolete with a bright orange cap sitting on a long, pale, obviously roughened stem. Even at ten paces the proportions are recognisable: the stem is tall relative to the cap and tapers upward, so the mushroom has an elegant, slightly top-heavy look quite unlike the squat build of many other boletes.

The cap colour is the second impression, a strong orange to orange-brown or tawny orange, matt and dry, holding its colour well even in old specimens.

Reading the cap

The cap is 6 to 20 cm across, hemispherical and tightly domed when young and expanding to broadly convex, rarely flattening completely.

The surface is dry and finely felted or suede-like when fresh, becoming smoother and sometimes slightly greasy in wet weather, and it can crack shallowly in dry spells to show pale flesh in the fissures. Colour ranges through orange, apricot-orange, tawny and orange-brown, generally uniform, occasionally a little paler at the extreme margin.

Now check the margin, because it carries a very useful character. The cap skin extends slightly beyond the tube layer as a narrow, sterile, overhanging flap or lip of tissue, often ragged and a shade paler, which you can see by looking at the cap edge in profile or by running a fingertip along the underside of the rim. That overhanging cuticle is typical of this species and its close relatives and is worth learning to spot.

Reading the pore surface

Turn the fruitbody over. The spore-bearing surface is a sponge of fine tubes, and here the colours are subdued rather than showy.

The pores are small and round, densely packed at several per millimetre, and their colour is whitish grey to dirty grey or pale greyish buff in young specimens, deepening to a dingier olive-grey or brownish grey with age. There is no red, no bright yellow and no orange in the pore surface, which is a helpful contrast with the vivid cap.

Press the pores firmly. They stain darker where bruised, working through olive-brown toward blackish brown over a few minutes. The tube layer itself is fairly deep, greyish, and it can be separated from the cap flesh with a knife.

Reading the stipe

The stipe is the anchor character for the whole genus and the place to confirm the species.

It is 8 to 20 cm tall, sometimes much more in deep moss, and 2 to 4 cm thick, distinctly tapering from a broader base to a narrower apex so that the outline is a long slender cone. In moss and deep litter a good proportion of the stem may be buried, so excavate it fully.

The surface is white to pale greyish and is covered from top to bottom with dense, small, tufted scales called scabers. In this species those scabers are dark: blackish, sooty black or very dark grey-brown, from the earliest stages, and they are arranged in more or less vertical rows so that the stem looks finely bristled or peppered. Their darkness against the pale ground gives a strong salt-and-pepper appearance and is the character that most quickly names the species once you know the cap is orange.

Reading the flesh, base and colour change

Take a fruitbody, split it in half vertically from cap centre through the whole stipe, and lay the halves cut face up. Then wait and watch, because this species puts on a genuinely informative display.

Fresh flesh is white and firm, denser in the stipe than in the cap. Within a minute or two the exposed surface begins to flush pinkish, wine-pink or lilac-grey, most obviously in the stipe. That flush then deepens through slate-grey and dark grey to a sooty blackish purple over the following ten to twenty minutes, until the cut face is dark and marbled. In cold weather the process is slower and greyer; in warm humid conditions the pink phase is vivid.

Now look specifically at the very base of the stipe. In this species the basal tissue frequently shows blue-green, turquoise or verdigris tones on cutting, sometimes as a distinct band and sometimes as a patchy wash. Do not expect it on every fruitbody, but when present it is a strong confirming character.

Taking and reading a spore print

Boletes print readily if the cap is mature.

Cut the cap free, place it tube surface down on white paper, cover it with a bowl, and leave it four to eight hours or overnight.

The print is a dull olive-brown to snuff-brown or ochre-brown. It is not black, not pink, and not white. That places the specimen comfortably in the mainstream of the bolete relatives and, combined with the scabers, keeps you in the right genus.

Substrate, partner tree and season

This is an ectomycorrhizal fungus and its partner is birch. Its mycelium forms sheaths around birch fine roots, and every genuine collection you make should have birch within reasonable rooting distance, which in practice means the same clump, hedge or heath edge.

The habitats to search are damp birch woodland, birch scrub on heath and moor, mossy hollows, the edges of bogs where birch has colonised, birch on old spoil and disturbed ground, and birch planted along plantation rides. It often grows through deep moss, bilberry or grass rather than bare litter, and on acid soils in particular.

The season is summer into autumn, generally starting earlier than many boletes and running until the first hard frosts. Fruiting responds strongly to sustained rain followed by warmth.

Separating it from close look-alikes

Work through the genus on stipe scaber colour, cap colour, partner tree and flesh change.

Leccinum scabrum, the brown birch bolete, shares birch and the tapering stem, but its cap is dull brown to greyish brown rather than orange, its scabers are brown to grey-brown rather than black, and its flesh changes very little on cutting, remaining white or drifting only slightly.

Leccinum variicolor also grows with birch and has dark scabers, but its cap is mottled grey-brown to blackish brown with pale patches rather than clean orange, its flesh in the stipe base is strongly and consistently blue-green, and its tubes often show blueing.

Leccinum aurantiacum has an orange to brick-red cap but is associated with aspen and poplar, and its stipe scabers start pale or reddish brown and darken later rather than being black from the outset; its flesh reddens more strongly before greying.

Leccinum albostipitatum is another aspen species with an orange cap and a strikingly white stipe whose scabers stay white or become pale rusty.

Boletus, Imleria and Butyriboletus species are excluded immediately by their stipe surface: they may be reticulate, dotted or smooth, but they never carry the discrete tufted scabers of this genus.

Field checklist

Cap colour, scaber colour and partner tree. Leccinum scabrum shares birch but has a dull brown cap, brown-grey scabers and flesh that barely changes. Leccinum aurantiacum and Leccinum albostipitatum have orange caps but grow with aspen and poplar and have pale, whitish or reddish-brown scabers rather than black ones from the start. Leccinum variicolor is with birch and has dark scabers but a mottled grey-brown cap and consistently strong blue-green in the stipe base.
