Orange Bonnet Identification Guide
A working method for recognising Mycena acicula, the pinhead-sized scarlet-orange bonnet of damp woodland twigs, from cap and gill colour through to its amyloid white spores. Includes step-by-step separation from Orange Mosscap and the other tiny orange agarics.
The Moment You Find One
Almost nobody sets out to find Orange Bonnet. You find it while kneeling for something else, and a spark of hot orange registers at the edge of vision, sitting on a wet fallen twig or a rotting stem of last year's nettle. The setting is nearly always the same: shaded, humid, low-lying broadleaf or mixed woodland, a ditch bank, a damp hollow where leaf litter stays sodden, or the mossy flank of an old log. The whole fungus is smaller than a match. A cap of two to five millimetres sits on a hair-thin yellow stalk that rarely exceeds three centimetres, so your first task is simply to get your eye down to substrate level and slow down.
A hand lens is not optional here. Every character that matters on this species lives at ten-times magnification, and trying to work from a naked-eye impression of a small orange dot is the fastest route to a wrong name.
Reading the Cap
The cap is hemispherical at first and stays domed or bell-shaped throughout its life. It never flattens out into a plate and it never develops a central navel. Colour is the strongest single character: an intense orange to orange-scarlet over the centre, cooling to orange-yellow and finally pale lemon at the rim. Sun and age bleach it steadily, so a weathered specimen can be almost apricot with only a hint of red left at the disc.
The surface is dry to slightly moist rather than sticky, and under the lens it carries a faint frosted bloom. When the cap is water-loaded you can see the gill lines telegraphing through as fine translucent striations that run from the margin toward the disc. The margin itself is thin, sometimes very slightly scalloped, and paler than the rest.
Gills, Stipe and Base
Turn the cap over gently with a pin or a blade of grass rather than a fingertip. The gills are pale yellow to whitish-yellow, distant, and there are usually only nine to fourteen of them reaching the stalk. Attachment is the character to fix in your mind: they are adnate, meeting the stipe squarely, at most with a tiny decurrent tooth. They do not run down the stalk. Gill edges are concolorous or slightly paler, never contrastingly coloured.
The stipe is thread-thin, one to five tenths of a millimetre wide, cylindrical, hollow, translucent and elastic. It is pale to bright lemon-yellow, often warmer orange right at the apex where it meets the gills. Fresh material is densely pruinose over its whole length; a lens shows a haze of fine hairs that gradually wears away as the fungus ages. At the very base a small tuft of white hairs grips the substrate. There is no ring, no volva, no bulb, and no cord-like rhizomorphs running away through the litter.
Flesh and Colour Change
There is almost no flesh to describe. What there is is watery, pale yellowish and completely unchanging when cut or squeezed. No milk or coloured juice is released, and no bruising reaction develops on the cap, gills or stalk. Crushing the cap smears a little orange pigment on the fingers, but that is dye transfer rather than a chemical change, and it fades on the skin within minutes. If you find a small orange bonnet that stains, weeps latex, or slowly reddens or blackens where handled, you are not looking at this species.
Smell is negligible and of no diagnostic value.
Getting a Spore Print
A spore print from a two-millimetre cap sounds absurd, but it is achievable and worth doing. Take four or five caps, trim the stalks close, and lay them fertile-side-down on a strip of black card or a glass microscope slide. Cover them with an upturned cup with a scrap of damp tissue tucked underneath to hold humidity, and leave the arrangement somewhere still and cool overnight. The result is a faint chalky bloom, and its colour is white.
Under the microscope the spores are cylindric-ellipsoid, roughly nine to eleven by three to four and a half micrometres, and they are amyloid, turning grey-blue in Melzer's iodine. That amyloid reaction is a genus-level anchor for Mycena and it immediately rules out several of the small orange species that grow alongside it.
Substrate and Season
Orange Bonnet is a small-scale recycler of fine woody and herbaceous debris. Look for it on fallen twigs, dead stems of herbaceous plants, decaying leaf petioles, bramble canes, and woody fragments buried in wet litter, often with moss growing around the point of attachment. It also turns up on the sodden underside of rotting logs. What it does not do is grow in a moss carpet on open turf, and it does not grow from soil.
Fruiting runs from spring through to late autumn, tracking rainfall rather than the calendar; a mild wet week in April can produce as many as October will. It is widespread across Europe and North America but chronically under-recorded because of its size. Specimens appear singly or in loose scattered groups, never in tight clusters from a single base.
Separating the Look-Alikes
Orange Mosscap (Rickenella fibula) is the confusion that catches most people. Its cap is umbilicate, with a small sunken navel at the centre from an early stage, and its gills are white and strongly decurrent, running visibly down the stalk. It lives in moss carpets on lawns, banks and walls rather than on twigs, and its spores are inamyloid. Gill attachment alone settles it.
Scarlet Bonnet (Atheniella adonis, long known as Mycena adonis) shares the size and the bell-shaped cap but the colour is a pinkish coral-red rather than orange-scarlet, and crucially the stipe is white, not yellow. It favours grass, heath, moss and conifer duff.
Ivory Bonnet (Atheniella flavoalba) is cream to pale yellow throughout, with no orange phase at all, and prefers grassy places.
Xeromphalina campanella appears in swarms of dozens on rotting conifer wood, has decurrent yellowish gills, and a tough, dark rusty-brown stipe with a conspicuous hairy base.
Loreleia postii is orange with decurrent gills and turns up on burnt ground or among liverworts, again separated by gill attachment and habitat.
Work the sequence in this order and you will rarely go wrong: confirm the domed non-navelled cap, confirm the adnate pale yellow gills, confirm the yellow pruinose stalk, then confirm the woody or herbaceous debris it is sitting on.
