Orange Peel Fungus Identification Guide

A practical guide to Aleuria aurantia, the brilliant orange cup of bare disturbed ground, covering its two-tone surfaces, brittle flesh, spore discharge and reticulate spores. Includes morphology-only separation from other orange cup fungi.

Recognising the Situation

Orange Peel Fungus is a fungus of disturbance. The classic setting is a gravel forest track, a compacted path edge, a roadside cutting, a clay bank where machinery has scraped the topsoil, or newly landscaped ground around a car park. You are not looking in deep litter or on wood. You are looking at bare, packed, often stony earth in late summer or autumn, and what you see looks exactly like someone has dropped strips of orange peel.

The colour is extraordinary, a brilliant almost fluorescent orange that carries at a distance and looks artificial in dull light. Cups appear singly at first but frequently build into crowded colonies of dozens, pressed together into overlapping rosettes that can cover a square metre of path.

The Basic Architecture

This is an ascomycete, so throw out the cap-gills-stalk framework. What you have is an apothecium: an open cup lined on its inner face with the spore-producing layer. Fruitbodies are two to ten centimetres across, starting as a shallow disc, then expanding, splitting at the rim and becoming irregular, wavy, contorted and lobed. Older specimens often flatten out entirely or fold back on themselves, which is exactly what produces the peel resemblance.

There is no stalk. The cup is sessile, attached at a small central point, and it lifts away from the soil cleanly with a little grit stuck to the base.

The Two Surfaces

Read both faces separately, because their contrast is a strong field mark.

The inner, upper, fertile surface is the hymenium. It is brilliant orange to orange-red, smooth, matt to faintly waxy in appearance, and never slimy or sticky.

The outer, lower surface is considerably paler, whitish-orange to cream or with a faint pink cast, and it is finely downy under a lens, covered by a mealy bloom of short hyphal hairs. Critically, there are no stiff dark bristles along the rim. Several similar cups have hairy margins, and checking the rim under magnification is one of the fastest exclusions you can make.

Flesh and Colour Change

The flesh is thin, one to three millimetres, whitish to pale orange, and notably brittle. Bend a section and it snaps with a short clean break rather than tearing or stretching. There is no latex, no exudate, and no colour change on cutting or handling. Nothing bruises blue, green or brown. There is no distinctive smell.

That brittleness plus the absence of any staining reaction eliminates several other orange discs straight away.

Spores Without a Spore Print

Cup fungi do not drop spores passively the way a gilled mushroom does, so an ordinary print is not the tool here. There are two useful approaches.

First, provoke a discharge. Bring a fresh cup into sunlight, or breathe warm damp air across the fertile surface, and watch closely against a dark background. Thousands of asci fire simultaneously and you see a visible puff of spores drifting off the surface like a wisp of smoke. It is a satisfying confirmation that you are dealing with an ascomycete rather than a strangely coloured jelly or crust.

Second, for a deposit, invert a cup over a glass slide or dark card inside a covered box for a few hours. The deposit is whitish.

Under the microscope the spores are diagnostic beyond argument. They are ellipsoid, roughly seventeen to twenty-four by nine to eleven micrometres, contain two conspicuous oil droplets, and are covered with a coarse net-like reticulate ornamentation whose ridges project as short pointed apiculi at each end. Asci are eight-spored and operculate, opening by a hinged lid, and their tips do not blue in iodine.

Substrate, Season and Ecology

The species is a soil saprotroph and something of a pioneer, colonising ground where the vegetation and organic layer have been stripped or compacted. It is commonest on clayey or calcareous soils, and it turns up reliably on gravel tracks, forestry roads, path verges, quarry floors, building plots and thin lawns with exposed earth. It also appears on old burnt ground and on landscaped soil a year or two after the disturbance.

Fruiting runs from late summer well into late autumn, and cups often persist through the first light frosts, gradually fading and collapsing. It is widespread across the north temperate zone and is one of the most frequently photographed cup fungi because of its size and colour.

Separating the Look-Alikes

Caloscypha fulgens is a comparably brilliant orange cup but appears in spring near melting snow in conifer forest, has thicker, more persistent cup walls, and, decisively, stains blue-green to olive at the margin and wherever it is handled.

Eyelash Cup (Scutellinia scutellata) is much smaller, under fifteen millimetres, scarlet rather than orange, and carries a fringe of stiff black hairs around the rim that is obvious under a lens.

Melastiza species are small, under two centimetres, orange-red, and have a minutely brown-hairy margin.

Hare's Ear (Otidea onotica) is ear-shaped, split down one side rather than forming a closed cup, ochre-orange with pinkish tints, tapers into a short stalk at the base, and grows in leaf litter under broadleaf trees.

Sowerbyella radiculata is an orange cup with a distinct rooting stalk buried in conifer duff, so lift the whole fruitbody before deciding.

Scarlet Elfcup (Sarcoscypha austriaca and S. coccinea) is deep scarlet, keeps a goblet shape with a short stalk, grows from buried hardwood sticks, and fruits in winter and spring.

Pyronema omphalodes forms pinkish-orange crusts on burnt ground built from apothecia only one or two millimetres across.

Peziza species on similar bare ground are brown, purple-brown or ochre, never orange.

And worth saying: actual discarded citrus peel on a woodland car park catches people out every autumn. The fungus is brittle, downy and paler on its outer face, and it puffs spores when warmed.

Field sequence: bare disturbed ground, sessile brilliant orange cup, paler downy outer surface, no marginal bristles, brittle flesh, no staining. That is the species.
