Orange Tooth Identification Guide
A practical walk-through for recognising Hydnellum aurantiacum in conifer duff, from its lumpy rust-orange cap and pale spines to the banded, cork-hard flesh revealed by a vertical cut.
Where You Are Standing When You Find It
Picture yourself on a mossy bank in an old spruce or fir stand, on thin, gravelly, acid soil where the needle litter is deep and the ground layer is mostly feather moss and scattered blueberry. Orange Tooth belongs to that kind of place. What catches your eye is rarely mushroom-shaped: it is a low, squat, lumpy object the colour of rust and old brick, sitting almost flush with the moss, often two or three fruitbodies grown together into a single compound mass with lobed, irregular outlines. The first honest impression most people have is that something was spilled onto the forest floor and then hardened. Because these fruitbodies are woody and persistent, you will also find blackened, mummified specimens from previous weeks standing right next to fresh ones, which is itself a useful clue that you are among the tooth fungi rather than among ordinary soft-fleshed agarics.
Reading the Cap
Work top-down. The cap is roughly 3-10 cm across but almost never circular. Young caps are finely velvety, matted-felty to the fingertip, and they carry a broad pale zone at the growing edge: whitish to cream, sometimes flushed pale orange, sharply set off from the deeper rusty-orange to orange-brown centre. As the fruitbody ages, that pale rim fills in with colour and the surface becomes roughened, pitted, bumpy and sometimes radially ridged, occasionally with faint concentric banding. Look for a habit that is diagnostic of the whole genus: twigs, needles and living grass blades are simply engulfed and grow straight through the cap, because the fungus expands around whatever is in its way. Fresh, actively growing margins may bead with clear to pale amber droplets. Note carefully whether any droplets are deep blood-red, because that points elsewhere.
The Spore-Bearing Surface
Turn the fruitbody over. Instead of gills or pores you find crowded, downward-pointing spines (teeth) roughly 2-6 mm long, running decurrent down onto the stalk. In fresh material they are whitish to pale pinkish-buff or pale tan with slightly paler tips; with age and spore deposition they darken to dull brown. Drag a thumb gently across them: they are firm and slightly springy, not brittle and shattering. Under a hand lens the teeth are neatly conical and separate, not fused into a maze.
Stipe and Base
The stalk is short and stout, typically 1-5 cm tall, often off-centre, sometimes tapering downward, coloured rusty-orange to brown and felted like the cap. The base is usually swollen and thoroughly matted with moss, needles and sand, so the fruitbody does not lift cleanly; you have to dig, and you should, because the base carries information. Excavate a little and check whether the stalk plunges into soil (it does) or into buried wood (it does not).
Flesh, Section and Colour Change
This is where the identification is really decided. Slice the whole fruitbody vertically from cap edge through the base with a sharp knife. Three things should be true. First, the flesh is tough, corky to nearly woody; you cannot tear it the way you would tear an ordinary mushroom. Second, it is duplex: a softer, more fibrous upper layer sits over a harder, denser lower layer, and the boundary is usually visible as a change in texture. Third, and most useful, the cut face shows strong concentric zoning in bands of orange, rust and brown, like growth rings. There is no dramatic instantaneous colour change on cutting, only slow darkening. Critically, there should be no blue or blue-grey zone anywhere in the lower flesh or stalk.
Taking and Reading a Spore Print
Tooth fungi print perfectly well if you treat them like any other mushroom. Trim the fruitbody free, set it spine-side down on white paper, cover it with a bowl to stop draughts, and leave it somewhere still for several hours or overnight. The deposit is brown. On mature specimens in the field you can often shortcut this: look at the moss, twigs and neighbouring fruitbodies immediately downwind and below, which are frequently dusted with a fine brown bloom of shed spores. If you have a lens or a microscope, the spores themselves are excellent confirmation - subglobose and covered in coarse warts and knobs rather than smooth. Brown, warted spores plus corky, zoned flesh places you firmly in the tooth-fungus group that contains Orange Tooth.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
Orange Tooth is an ectomycorrhizal partner of conifers, most often spruce, fir and pine. It fruits from the ground in duff and moss, never on wood, and it favours long-undisturbed, often nutrient-poor sandy or gravelly acid soils. Fruiting runs from late summer through autumn, with the tough fruitbodies persisting long after softer species have collapsed. Because it takes years to establish and is tied to mature stands, repeat visits to a known patch usually pay off - the same colony fruits in the same square metre season after season.
Separating the Closest Look-alikes on Morphology Alone
- Hydnellum ferrugineum: young, actively growing caps exude conspicuous blood-red droplets and the cap is pinkish-buff to reddish-brown rather than orange; sectioned flesh is zoned in pinkish-brown tones.
- Hydnellum caeruleum: young cap margins carry a bluish or grey-blue flush, and the vertical cut shows a blue to blue-grey band in the upper flesh above an orange base. That blue zone alone settles it.
- Hydnellum auratile: smaller, thinner-fleshed and a brighter, cleaner orange overall, with more sharply zonate caps and much less obvious duplex structure.
- Hydnellum concrescens and H. scrobiculatum: distinctly zoned pinkish-brown to dull brown caps, thinner flesh, and no strong orange.
- Phellodon species: white to grey flesh, a white spore print, thin and leathery rather than corky texture, and grey-white teeth.
- Sarcodon species: much larger, fleshy-brittle rather than corky, with coarse upturned scales; they snap when bent instead of resisting.
- Hydnum repandum: pale apricot to cream, fleshy and brittle throughout, with a white spore print, brittle spines that rub off easily, and a clean central stalk.
Field Checklist
