Pale Brittlestem Identification Guide

A practical walkthrough for Psathyrella candolleana, the fragile cream-capped clustered mushroom of lawns, stumps and buried hardwood roots, including its veil fringe, hollow snapping stipe and dark purple-brown print.

First Impressions

You usually meet the Pale Brittlestem in the least dramatic place imaginable: a mown lawn near an old tree, the edge of a path, a bed of wood chips, or the crumbling remains of a hardwood stump. A tight cluster of pale, thin-fleshed caps pushes up overnight, and by the following afternoon the caps have flattened, split at the rim and turned the colour of old cream. Everything about the mushroom announces fragility. Try to lift one by the cap and the stipe often snaps first.

Two impressions should register immediately. First, the cap changes colour as it dries, going from a warm honey or tan tone to a much paler ivory, and it does so unevenly, so a single troop can contain caps at three different shades at once. Second, the mushroom grows in bunches from a shared point below ground, which tells you there is buried hardwood down there even if no stump is visible.

Reading the Cap

Fresh caps are 2-8 cm across, at first almost egg-shaped or bluntly conical, then bell-shaped, then broadly convex, and finally flat with a low central hump. The surface is smooth, sometimes minutely wrinkled over the disc, and is never scaly or granular. The flesh is remarkably thin, and by maturity the margin becomes wavy, uplifted and often splits radially into shallow tears.

The most useful cap character is the veil. Young fruit bodies carry a delicate white membrane stretched from cap margin to stipe. When it tears it leaves a row of soft, cottony, white flakes hanging from the cap edge like a fringe of tiny curtains. On the freshest caps in a cluster this fringe is obvious; on the oldest it may have washed off entirely, so always examine the youngest members of a group.

Because the cap is hygrophanous, describe it twice: once wet and once dry. Wet, it is tan to date-brown, often darkest at the centre. As it dries, pallor spreads outwards from the disc, leaving a two-tone cap with a paler middle and a browner rim, and eventually a uniform pale straw or whitish colour.

The Gills

Turn the cap over and watch the gills over the life of a cluster, because they are a clock. Whitish and rather pale in buttons, they pass through grey and lilac-grey to a dark purplish or chocolate-brown at maturity. The gills are crowded, narrow, and attached to the stipe by a narrow adnate to adnexed join, never running down it. Under a lens the gill edges are finely white-fringed against the darker faces, which gives the mature gill a pinstriped look worth confirming.

Stipe, Base and Flesh

The stipe is 4-9 cm long and only 3-8 mm thick, white to off-white, smooth or faintly silky-fibrillose, and equal from top to bottom or slightly swollen at the base. Snap it: it is hollow and brittle, breaking with a clean crack rather than bending. That brittleness is where the name comes from and is a genuine field character, not a metaphor.

There is usually no proper ring, but on freshly opened fruit bodies you may find a faint fibrillose zone near the top where the veil released. Dig the base out rather than cutting it. You will typically find several stipes converging on a common base, bound to fragments of rotting wood or root by white mycelial cords and threads. Flesh throughout is white, thin, watery and unchanging; nothing stains blue, red or yellow when cut.

Taking a Spore Print

This species prints readily and the print is diagnostic. Cut a mature cap free and lay it gills-down on white paper, cover it to stop draughts, and leave it two to four hours. The deposit is dark purplish-brown, sometimes so dark it reads as blackish-brown until you smear it thinly with a fingertip and see the purple undertone against white. That colour immediately separates the Pale Brittlestem from the plain brown-printing and rust-printing groups it can resemble in the field.

Substrate and Season

Psathyrella candolleana is a wood decomposer that specialises in buried resources. It fruits on and around hardwood stumps, on dead roots under lawns and verges, along the shaded edges of paths, in flower beds, on wood chip mulch and in gardens. It is one of the most widespread mushrooms in the north temperate world and fruits from late spring through autumn, often in repeated flushes after rain, and it can appear in enormous numbers in a single week.

Because it lives on buried wood, the visible substrate is often just grass. When someone reports "a cluster of pale mushrooms in the lawn under the old maple", this species is a leading candidate.

Separating the Look-Alikes

Other Psathyrella species are the real challenge, and many are separable only under a microscope. What sets P. candolleana apart macroscopically is the combination of a comparatively large cap that dries very pale, the persistent cottony veil fringe on the margin, clustered growth from buried hardwood, and a stipe that is white and clean rather than brown-fibrillose. Species such as P. spadiceogrisea are more slender, browner as they dry, and lack the conspicuous marginal veil flakes.

Coprinellus micaceus grows in similar clusters on the same stumps and shares a tawny cap, but its cap is finely grooved from the margin nearly to the centre and dusted with glistening granules when young, and its gills eventually blacken and soften, printing black rather than purple-brown.

Agrocybe praecox occupies the same wood chips and lawn edges but is a sturdier mushroom with a firmer, less brittle stipe, a distinct membranous ring, and a plain brown spore print.

Panaeolus species on grassy ground have tougher stipes, mottled grey-black gills and a jet-black print.

Pluteus species on stumps have completely free gills and a pink spore print, and grow singly rather than in dense bundles.

A Compact Field Checklist

Thin pale cap that dries ivory from the centre; white cottony flakes fringing the young cap margin; crowded gills passing whitish to grey to dark purple-brown with white edges; a white, hollow, snapping stipe with no true ring; clustered on buried hardwood, stumps or wood chips; dark purple-brown spore print. When those six line up, you are looking at the Pale Brittlestem.
