Pine Bolete Identification Guide
A step-by-step read of Boletus pinophilus: the mahogany cap, non-bluing pores, netted bulbous stipe and wine-red subcuticular line, plus how it differs from Penny Bun and other stout boletes.
The First Impression
You are under Scots pine on sandy, acid ground, or in an old spruce plantation, often on higher or cooler ground than you would search for other big boletes. Frequently the mushroom announces itself before it emerges: a low dome pushing up through needle litter and moss, which you scrape aside to reveal a cap the colour of polished mahogany. Weight is the second impression — a well-grown Pine Bolete is a heavy, dense object with a barrel of a stalk. Colour is the third and most useful: deep brick to red-brown, warmer and distinctly redder than the hazel-brown of a Penny Bun.
Reading the Cap
The cap is 8–25 cm across and occasionally larger, hemispherical when young, becoming convex and eventually broadly convex; it rarely flattens completely. The colour is the defining field character — chestnut, mahogany, brick, copper or deep reddish-brown, sometimes darker over the disc, sometimes with paler ochre patches toward the rim, but generally without the crisp narrow white band around the margin that so many people use to recognise the Penny Bun.
Texture matters too. Young caps are covered in a fine whitish bloom or pruina that rubs away under a finger, leaving the surface beneath uneven, lumpy and slightly wrinkled — a bumpy, hammered look rather than a flat smooth one. In wet weather the cuticle becomes slightly greasy or tacky; in dry weather it is matte to faintly shining, and it does not peel far when you try to lift it at the margin.
Pores and Tubes
Turn the mushroom over. The pore surface is finely porous with small round openings, packed tight and white to whitish when young, then cream, then yellow, and finally olive-yellow in fully mature specimens as the spores ripen. The tube layer is thick, and the tubes are adnexed to almost free, sinking into a shallow depression around the stipe apex. Push a thumb into the tube layer and lift: in this group the whole spongy layer separates cleanly from the cap flesh in a sheet, which places the mushroom in the Boletus group at once.
Now do the bruise test, and do it firmly. Press the pore surface hard with a thumb, and score it with a fingernail. The result should be essentially nothing — no blue, no green, at most a slow faint brownish discolouration. That negative reaction is one of the pillars of the identification.
The Stipe
The stipe is 6–15 cm long and 3–8 cm thick, sometimes more; obese, barrel-shaped or bulbous when young, becoming club-shaped or nearly cylindrical as it elongates, but always stout in relation to the cap. Ground colour is pale ochre-brown to reddish-brown, and it usually carries warmer red-brown tones than the pale, almost white stalk of the Penny Bun.
The surface network is important, so read it with a lens in raking light. There is a fine reticulum — a mesh of raised ridges, not dots, granules or scabers — covering at least the upper half of the stipe and often running nearly to the base. It is pale to whitish at first, and it commonly takes on the reddish-brown tone of the stipe as the mushroom ages. Reticulum versus scabers is a genus-level distinction: raised interlocking ridges say Boletus, while small roughened dots say Leccinum.
Flesh and Colour Change
Cut the fruit body vertically from the cap centre through the base of the stipe. The flesh is white, firm and thick, and it stays white on exposure — no blueing, no pinking, no green. Watch the cut face for a full minute before recording it as unchanging.
Then look immediately beneath the cap cuticle. A thin vinaceous, wine-red or reddish-brown line is usually visible there, and this subcuticular flush is one of the most useful supporting characters for the species. The stipe flesh may be faintly brownish in the base, and older specimens are commonly tunnelled by insect larvae. The smell is mild and pleasantly fungal.
Taking a Spore Print
Cut the cap free from the stipe and set it pore-side down on white paper or glass under a bowl. Large boletes drop heavily, so a good deposit often appears within two or three hours; leave it up to eight for a thick print.
The print is olive-brown to olive-ochre — a distinctly olive-toned brown, not the cinnamon-rust of Cortinarius nor the dark purple-brown of Agaricus. Under the microscope the spores are smooth, spindle-shaped to subfusiform, and long relative to their width, roughly 14–18 × 4.5–6 µm.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
Pine Bolete is ectomycorrhizal, forming sheaths around the fine roots of its partner trees and exchanging soil nutrients and water for tree sugars. The partnership is strongly with pine, especially Scots pine, and also with spruce and fir; in southern Europe it is occasionally recorded with beech, sweet chestnut and oak. It favours acid, sandy or gravelly, well-drained soils and is common on heathland pine, upland conifer woods, plantation margins, and mossy needle litter with bilberry or heather underneath.
Fruiting often comes in two windows: an early flush in late spring or early summer where conditions allow, and the main autumn one. Because the mycelium is tied to particular root systems, fruit bodies appear in the same places year after year, often in loose arcs around the drip line of a single tree — so a productive spot is worth marking and revisiting.
Separating It from the Look-Alikes
Boletus edulis, the Penny Bun, is the nearest relative and the usual comparison. Its cap is paler — hazel, tan, warm brown — usually with a narrow pale or whitish band right at the margin, its stipe is whitish to pale brown with a fine white net normally confined to the upper third, and it lacks the wine-red line beneath the cuticle. It also grows with a much wider range of trees, including beech, oak, birch and spruce.
Boletus reticulatus (often listed as B. aestivalis) has a dry, matte, paler brown cap that typically cracks into a fine mosaic in dry weather, a conspicuous white net running the whole length of the stipe, and a summer season in broadleaf woodland.
Boletus aereus is very dark bronze to blackish-brown, often mottled and unevenly coloured, with a brown stipe and brown reticulum, and it favours warm oak and chestnut woods.
Imleria badia, the Bay Bolete, has a smooth chestnut cap that can approach the right colour, but the stipe carries only fine fibrils with no true net, and the pores stain blue-green promptly and obviously on pressure.
Tylopilus felleus mimics the shape and has a reticulate stipe, but its net is coarse and dark brown on a paler stalk and its pore surface develops a pink flush as it matures.
Caloboletus calopus has lemon-yellow pores, a red-zoned netted stipe and flesh that blues strongly on cutting.
Neoboletus luridiformis, Suillellus luridus and the red-pored Rubroboletus species all have orange to red pore mouths and blue instantly and dramatically.
Leccinum species have stipes covered in dark scabers rather than a raised net, and their flesh nearly always discolours grey, black, pink or wine on cutting.
