Pink Waxcap Identification Guide

A field-first walkthrough of Porpolomopsis calyptriformis, from the rose-lilac cone spotted across old turf to the waxy gills, white spore print and the grassland setting that clinches it.

The setting, and what catches your eye first

The Pink Waxcap tends to be identified from ten metres away and only confirmed on your knees. You will almost always be standing on short, mossy, unfertilised turf: an old churchyard, a dune slack, a hill pasture that has never been ploughed or fed, a lawn that has been mown for decades and improved never. The season is late summer through to the first hard frosts, with October usually the peak.

Against that green, the fruit body reads as a small rose-lilac spike, 4-10 cm tall, standing singly or in loosely scattered troops rather than tight clumps. Two things register at once: the colour, a soft chalky pink with a lilac cast that no other grassland agaric quite reproduces, and the profile, a narrow pointed cone on a pale stalk. Nothing else in that habitat combines a pink conical cap with a white stem.

Reading the cap

Get the cap into profile before you touch anything. Young caps are sharply conical, almost bullet-shaped, 3-7 cm tall and often taller than they are wide. With age the cone flattens outwards but keeps a pointed central peak, so an expanded specimen looks like a low tent rather than a dome.

The surface is dry to faintly greasy, never sticky in the way that Gliophorus species are, and finely silky-fibrillose under a lens. Colour runs from a strong salmon-pink through rose to a pale lilac-pink, and it fades markedly with age, sun and rain, so an old cap can be almost cream with pink only at the margin. The most useful cap character is the margin itself: as the cone expands it splits radially, sometimes deeply, and the split lobes lift and curl upwards. A weathered specimen can look torn and star-like. That splitting habit, combined with the peak, is worth more than the exact shade of pink.

Gills, and what waxy actually means

Turn one over. The gills are thick, broad, widely spaced and soft, running from narrowly attached to almost free of the stem, and they are usually a paler wash of the cap colour: pale pink, whitish-pink, sometimes near white in old specimens.

Rub a gill between finger and thumb. Waxcap gills feel greasy and slightly soapy, and they smear rather than tear; the texture is genuinely more like soft candle wax than like paper. They are also noticeably thick in section for such a small mushroom, and the gill edge is even, not serrated. Look for interspersed short gills that stop partway to the stem. This waxy, distant, soft-gilled arrangement immediately places you in the waxcap group even before you settle on a species.

Stipe, base and flesh

The stipe is 4-12 cm long, slender, roughly cylindrical, often slightly compressed or grooved lengthways, and white to very pale pink, usually paler than the cap and frequently pure white towards the base. It is dry, smooth to slightly fibrous, and hollow in maturity, so it snaps cleanly with a soft, brittle break rather than peeling into fibres.

There is no ring and no volva. The base is simply tapered or slightly rounded and sits in the turf and moss without a bulb, sheath or basal disc. Excavate gently with a knife and check the very bottom, because the absence of any sac or rim is a real character here, not just an omission.

The flesh is thin, white to pale pink, fragile, and does not change colour when cut or bruised. Slice a cap in half lengthways and leave it for a few minutes: no blackening, no blueing, no reddening. Any waxcap that stains dark on handling has moved you into a different group entirely. Odour is faint and unremarkable.

Taking and reading a spore print

Cut the cap free of the stipe and set it gill-side down on paper. Because the cap is conical and splits, it can sit unevenly; press it lightly onto the paper or lay it inside the fold of a piece of card so the gills make contact. Cover with an upturned cup to keep humidity in and leave it two to four hours, or overnight if the specimen is young.

The print is white. Read it against both black and white paper, or use a sheet of glass and slide different backgrounds underneath, because a thin white print on white paper is easy to miss. A white print is central to this identification, because the single most confusable group in the same grassland has a pink print.

Substrate, season and ecology

This species grows directly from short turf among mosses, never on wood, dung or leaf litter. It belongs to the waxcap grassland community, a suite of fungi that appears on old, nutrient-poor, undisturbed swards that have been grazed or mown for long periods without fertiliser. Finding one is a habitat signal in itself: look around and you will usually also find other waxcaps, earth tongues, coral fungi and pink-gilled Entoloma species in the same field.

Fruiting runs from August to November in the northern hemisphere, later where autumns are mild, and is triggered by rain following warm weather. Individual fruit bodies are short-lived and weather-battered within days, so the splitting margin is often already advanced when you find them.

Separating it from look-alikes on morphology alone

Pink-gilled Entoloma species. These are the real test, because several are pinkish and grow in exactly the same turf. Their gills start whitish and turn a distinct salmon-pink as spores mature, they are usually attached with a notch, the cap is not waxy and rarely conical with a persistent peak, and above all the spore print is pink to salmon rather than white. Under a microscope the spores are angular. Print first, and Entoloma falls away.

Lilac Bonnet and relatives (Mycena pura group). Superficially pinkish-lilac, but the cap is bell-shaped and never sharply conical, the gills are thin and crowded rather than thick and distant, the stem is more cartilaginous, and these grow in woodland litter rather than short unimproved turf. They also carry a strong radish-like smell that the Pink Waxcap lacks.

Amethyst Deceiver. Purple rather than pink, with thick distant gills that can suggest a waxcap, but the cap is convex with a depressed centre, the stem is tough and twisted-fibrous rather than brittle and hollow, and it fruits with trees, not in open grassland.

Other waxcaps. Blackening Waxcap starts orange and turns coal-black on handling; Meadow Waxcap is buff-apricot with decurrent gills; Persistent Waxcap is a similar pointed cone but yellow to orange. In practice, the combination of pink cone, splitting margin, white stem and white print is not shared by any of them.

A quick field sequence
