Plantpot Dapperling Identification Guide

How to recognise Leucocoprinus birnbaumii, the bright yellow mushroom of plant pots and glasshouse beds, from its powdery pleated cap to its fragile ring and white spore print.

First impressions and the setting

This is the mushroom that appears overnight in a houseplant. Most encounters happen indoors or under glass: a potted fig, a conservatory bed, an office planter, a greenhouse bench, a bag of fresh potting compost. Outdoors in the tropics and subtropics it does the same thing in mulched borders, glasshouse beds and rich humus.

The first impression is impossible to miss. A sulphur to lemon-yellow mushroom, 2-6 cm across the cap and 3-10 cm tall, stands alone or in a small scattered group on bare compost. Fresh specimens are startlingly bright, almost artificial-looking, and the whole thing has a dusty, powdered appearance as if it has been dredged in yellow flour. It is also fleeting: a fruit body that opens in the morning is often collapsed, browning and slumped by evening, so a day-old specimen looks like a different organism.

Reading the cap

Watch the shape sequence, because it changes fast. The button is a small elongated egg or bullet, taller than wide, with the margin clamped against the stem. It then becomes conical, then bell-shaped, then broadly convex or almost flat with a low blunt umbo. Old caps flare and split at the margin.

The surface is dry, matt and covered with fine mealy or granular yellow scurf, the remains of a powdery universal veil. Brush it with a fingertip and it comes away, leaving a smoother, slightly darker surface beneath. The centre often keeps a denser, deeper yellow or slightly brownish cap of granules while the margin is paler.

The margin itself is strongly and finely grooved, with radial furrows running in about a third to a half of the cap radius. Those pleats deepen as the cap expands, giving mature specimens a distinctly ribbed parasol outline. Between the powder and the pleats you have the two most useful cap characters.

Colour fades. Bright chrome-yellow buttons become pale lemon, then buff or dirty cream, and finally the whole fruit body slumps to a brownish smear. A faded specimen is best identified by the pleating, the ring and a fresh neighbour.

Gills and the spore-bearing surface

Turn a cap over carefully; it tears easily. The gills are free, meaning they stop short of the stem and leave a clear circular gutter around it. This is a dapperling character and is worth confirming with a lens or by slicing the cap vertically through the stem junction.

Gills are crowded, fairly narrow, soft, and pale yellow to lemon, usually a paler shade than the cap surface. They do not darken to brown or black with age, they do not deliquesce, and they carry no coloured edge. Short gills of varying lengths are interleaved between the full-length ones.

Stipe, ring and base

The stipe is 3-10 cm long, slender, 2-6 mm thick, and yellow, usually a slightly paler and cleaner yellow than the cap. It is dusted with the same fine mealy granules over its lower part, and it is hollow, so it snaps with a crisp, brittle break.

The base is characteristically swollen into a club or a small bulb, not abruptly marginate and never enclosed in a sac. There is no volva and no cup, and no rooting extension: the base sits in the compost and lifts out cleanly.

In the upper third there is a ring, and its condition tells you the age of the specimen. Freshly opened, it is a delicate yellow membranous skirt that flares outwards. It is extremely fragile, and within hours it may be reduced to a ragged collar, a fibrous zone, or nothing at all. Some specimens have a movable ring that slides on the stem. Absence of a ring on an old specimen proves nothing.

Flesh, odour and colour change

The flesh is thin, soft, pale yellow to whitish in the stipe, and very watery. Cut a fruit body lengthways and watch: there is no bluing, no reddening, no orange latex, no gradual blackening. The only change over the following hours is a general collapse and browning as the whole structure autodigests structurally, which is age rather than a bruising reaction. Odour is faint and unremarkable.

Taking and reading a spore print

Act fast, because this species is short-lived. Choose a cap that has just flattened, cut it from the stem, and set it gill-side down on black paper under an upturned glass. Two to four hours will usually give a result, but do not leave a wilting specimen overnight expecting a heavy deposit; it may simply collapse into a smear.

The print is white, occasionally with the faintest cream tint. Read it on black paper, since a white print on white paper is easy to miss, especially when the mushroom itself is bright yellow and biases your expectation towards a yellow deposit. The white print is the key confirmation, because the two commonest yellow-capped confusions both drop brown spores.

Substrate, season and ecology

Leucocoprinus birnbaumii is a saprotroph of rich, humus-heavy, moist substrates. It lives in the potting medium itself, breaking down composted bark, peat, coir and organic matter, and it does not attach to plant roots or damage the host plant. Its mycelium can persist for years in a pot, producing occasional flushes without ever being visible in between.

It is a warm-climate species that has followed horticulture worldwide. In temperate regions it is effectively an indoor and glasshouse fungus, fruiting at any time of year whenever warmth, moisture and organic matter coincide, typically a few days after heavy watering. In the tropics and subtropics it fruits outdoors in mulch, gardens and forest humus, mainly in the wet season.

Separating it from look-alikes on morphology alone

Other Leucocoprinus species. Leucocoprinus cepistipes and Leucocoprinus cretaceus share the pleated cap, free gills, mealy surface, fragile ring and white print, but they are white to cream rather than yellow, and cepistipes typically has a more strongly swollen, onion-like stem base. If the fruit body is yellow throughout including gills and stipe, birnbaumii is the answer.

Leucocoprinus fragilissimus. Also yellow, but far more delicate, with a paper-thin, almost transparent, deeply pleated cap with a greenish-yellow tinge on a thread-like stem. It collapses at a touch and lacks the substantial mealy cap crust.

Yellow Fieldcap (Bolbitius titubans). Also bright yellow and short-lived, but the cap is slimy and viscid rather than powdery, the gills mature to cinnamon-brown, and the spore print is rust-brown. It grows in grass, dung and mulch rather than in pots.

Milky Conecap (Conocybe apala) and other Conocybe. Similar fragility and speed of collapse, but cream to pale tan rather than yellow, with a smooth conical cap, brown gills and a rust-brown spore print, typically in lawns.

Amanita and true parasols. Both have free gills and white prints, but Amanita has a volva or a distinct basal cup and a smooth or patchy cap rather than a mealy pleated one, and the true parasols are far larger with brown scale patterns on a white ground.

A quick field sequence

Bright yellow throughout, in potting compost or a glasshouse bed. Cap mealy-granular and radially pleated. Gills free, pale yellow, never browning. Stipe hollow with a club-shaped base, no volva, fragile yellow ring. Flesh unchanging on cutting. White spore print on black paper. That is Plantpot Dapperling.

Common questions

How do I confirm the gills are free rather than attached?
Slice the cap vertically through the stem junction and look at the cut face, or use a hand lens from below. In Leucocoprinus birnbaumii the gills stop short of the stem, leaving a clear circular gutter, which separates the dapperlings from most yellow mushrooms of mulch and grass.
Which yellow look-alikes does the spore print rule out?
A white print eliminates the Yellow Fieldcap and the conecaps, both of which drop rust to cinnamon-brown spores and mature to brown gills. Read the print on black paper, since a white deposit is easy to overlook, especially with such a strongly yellow fruit body.
Why does it appear in houseplants?
It is a saprotroph living in the potting medium, breaking down composted bark, peat, coir and other organic matter. It has no attachment to the plant's roots. Its mycelium can persist unseen in a pot for years and flushes a few days after heavy watering in warm conditions.
Why do specimens look so different from morning to evening?
Fruit bodies are extremely short-lived. A crisp bright yellow bullet in the morning expands, pleats, fades to buff and slumps into a brownish collapse by evening, often losing the fragile ring on the way. Identify from the freshest specimen in the pot and treat old ones as supporting evidence.
