Rayed Earthstar Identification Guide

A close reading of Geastrum quadrifidum, the small arched earthstar that stands its spore sac on four legs above a basal cup of glued litter. Covers the pedicel, the delimited peristome and separation from other earthstars.

Finding it in the first place

Rayed Earthstar is small and the colour of the litter it lives in, so most people find it only once they have learned to look. The habitat is dry, mossy conifer duff — needle carpets under spruce and pine, often on well-drained or lime-rich ground, sometimes in the shelter of old hedgerows and under conifer plantations. Kneel down and scan the surface of the needle layer rather than the vegetation above it. What resolves out of the background is a curious little structure: a grey-brown ball perhaps a centimetre across, held up off the ground on four pale arching legs, so the whole thing looks like a tiny spider or a spore capsule on a vaulted stand. Where one occurs there are usually several, scattered over a few square metres.

The four-part architecture

Earthstars repay a slow, structured examination, and Geastrum quadrifidum has four distinct parts. Work through them in order.

The basal cup. The outermost layer of the young fruitbody, the mycelial layer, does not lift with the rest. It stays behind on the ground as a shallow felted bowl with soil grains, needles and moss fragments cemented into it. The tips of the rays remain fastened to the rim of that cup. Slide a finger under the fruitbody to confirm the cup is there; it is one of the most decisive characters in the genus.

The rays. Above the cup the outer wall splits into arms — usually four, occasionally five, which is what the epithet quadrifidum records. Rather than lying flat, they arch strongly downward and outward and brace against the ground and the cup rim, lifting the central body 1–4 cm clear of the litter. This arched, vaulted posture is called fornicate. The rays are buff to pale brown on their inner face, and the whole expanded structure spans 2–4 cm.

The spore sac. Sitting at the top is the endoperidium, a globose to slightly flattened chamber 0.5–1.2 cm across, grey-brown and finely mealy or pruinose rather than glossy.

The stalk and collar. This is the character that finishes the identification. Between the rays and the sac there is a short but clearly visible stalk, or pedicel, and at its top a small collar-like swelling — an apophysis — where it meets the sac. Tilt the specimen and look sideways with a lens; a genuinely sessile sac sitting straight on the rays rules the species out.

Reading the mouth

Examine the top of the spore sac closely, ideally with a hand lens. There is a single opening, the peristome, and it is conical and fibrillose — built of converging fine fibres that give it a beaked, silky appearance rather than a series of neat grooves.

Around that cone is the feature that clinches the species: a distinct pale, smooth, circular zone that sets the peristome off sharply from the rest of the sac, like a saucer around a spout. This is described as a delimited peristome, and in Geastrum quadrifidum it is well marked and easy to see. Several otherwise similar earthstars have a fibrillose mouth that grades gradually into the sac surface with no such boundary.

Flesh, texture and behaviour

There is nothing soft to cut here. The rays are tough and leathery to almost woody, and the sac wall is papery. Nothing bruises, nothing changes colour, and there is no latex. The fruitbodies are also not hygroscopic: they do not close up when dry and reopen when wet. That distinguishes the genus habit from the barometer earthstars, whose thick rays fold shut over the sac in dry weather. Because the tissue is so durable, weathered Geastrum quadrifidum fruitbodies persist for many months and can be found in any season, greyed and dust-emptied.

Getting a spore deposit

The spore print equivalent is simple. Hold or stand a ripe specimen over a sheet of white paper and tap the sac gently with a fingertip. A puff of dark brown dust is expelled through the mouth, exactly as a raindrop would do in the field, and it settles as a fine brown deposit. The colour is a dark chocolate to dull umber brown.

Under the microscope the spores are globose and coarsely warted, roughly 4–6 µm in diameter and dark brown. Mixed among them is the capillitium: long, thick-walled, essentially unbranched threads, which help hold the spore mass in place until a disturbance shakes it loose.

Substrate, season and ecology

The species is a saprotroph of needle litter and humus, living on the accumulated dead plant material of the forest floor rather than partnering with tree roots. It favours dry, sheltered, well-drained places, often under dense conifer canopy where the duff layer is deep and undisturbed, and it shows a preference for calcareous ground in many regions. It is a northern-temperate to boreal fungus, widespread but rarely abundant.

Fresh fruitbodies mature in late summer and autumn, but because the structure is so tough the same population can be recorded through winter and spring. Dispersal is by the bellows mechanism: rain drops striking the papery sac compress it and puff spores out through the mouth. The fornicate, stilted posture matters here — by lifting the sac clear of the litter and into the moving air just above it, the fungus improves the chance that expelled spores are carried away rather than settling straight back into the duff.

Separating the other earthstars

Geastrum fornicatum is the closest match and also arches on a basal cup. Separate it by scale and mouth: it is considerably larger and more robust, generally 5–8 cm expanded with a bigger, darker spore sac, and its fibrillose peristome is not delimited by a pale circular zone. It also tends to occur in richer, more nutrient-loaded ground and hardwood litter.

Geastrum fimbriatum and Geastrum saccatum have rays that spread flat or curl only modestly, no basal cup, and a spore sac sitting directly on the rays without a stalk or apophysis; their peristomes are fibrillose but not delimited.

Geastrum triplex is much larger and develops a thick fleshy collar around the base of the sac from the cracking inner ray layer — a completely different look.

Geastrum pectinatum does have a distinct stalk, but the rays are not fornicate, and its mouth is a long grooved beak with fine radiating furrows rather than a silky fibrous cone.

Geastrum striatum also has an apophysis, but its peristome is grooved and striate.

Astraeus hygrometricus has thick, hard, cracked rays that close over the sac in dry weather and reopen when wet, no basal cup, no stalk, and an irregular tear for a mouth.

Myriostoma coliforme is unmistakable once seen: many mouths pepper its sac and it stands on several short stalks.

Field summary

How are the spores released?
By a bellows mechanism. Falling raindrops or a passing animal strike the papery spore sac, momentarily compressing it and puffing a cloud of dry brown spores out through the single mouth. Because the rays arch and stand the sac a centimetre or more above the litter, the released cloud enters moving air rather than falling straight back into the duff, which improves dispersal in the still conditions of a closed conifer floor.
