Rooting Polypore Identification Guide

A field walkthrough for Polyporus radicatus, the stalked polypore that appears to grow from bare woodland soil. Covers the scurfy cap, fine white pores, black rooting stem and the stalked polypores it resembles.

The Setting and the First Glance

The Rooting Polypore is one of the few polypores you find apparently growing out of bare soil. Picture a deciduous or mixed woodland in eastern North America in late summer — oak, maple, beech, hickory overhead, a floor of leaf litter and thin humus. Somewhere along a trail edge, on a bank, or in the leaf duff between roots, a single stalked mushroom stands up. It looks at first like an oversized, tough, drab-capped agaric.

The immediate correction comes when you tip it over. Instead of gills there is a pale, finely pored surface running a short way down the stalk. That combination — a solitary, centrally stalked fruit body, terrestrial in appearance, with a whitish pore layer — narrows you to a handful of stalked polypores at once. The second correction comes when you try to pick it: the stem does not lift, because it continues into the ground as a long black root.

Reading the Cap

The cap is 5 to 15 centimetres across, occasionally larger. Young caps are convex; with age they flatten and then become shallowly depressed or funnel-shaped over the stem attachment. The margin starts inrolled and thins out, often becoming wavy or slightly lobed and sometimes splitting radially in dry weather.

Colour is unhelpful on its own — yellow-brown, ochre, olive-buff or greyish-tan, sometimes darker toward the centre. Texture is far more diagnostic. The cap surface is dry and distinctly roughened: minutely scurfy, granular or finely scaly rather than smooth and polished, and often with a faint felty bloom that rubs off under a thumb. Run a fingertip across it and compare that gritty feel against the slick, varnished caps of the related species discussed below. In wet weather the surface can look matte and slightly darker, but it never becomes viscid.

Reading the Pore Surface

Turn the fruit body over and look at the fertile layer with a hand lens. The pores are white to cream when fresh, dulling to buff or pale tan with age and often bruising faintly darker where handled. They are small and angular to nearly round, roughly 2 to 4 per millimetre — fine enough that the surface reads as smooth-porcelain from arm's length and only resolves into a mesh close up.

Trace the pores toward the stem. In this species they run down the stalk for a short distance, decurrent, fading out gradually rather than stopping at a sharp line. The tube layer itself is shallow, 1 to 4 millimetres deep, and cannot be peeled away from the cap flesh as a separate mat — this is the classic polypore arrangement and it immediately excludes the boletes, whose spongy tube layers strip off cleanly.

The Stipe and the Rooting Base

The stem is the star of the show. Above ground it is 4 to 12 centimetres tall and 1 to 2 centimetres thick, central or very slightly off-centre, tapering downward. The upper portion is pale ochre to buff and covered in the same scurfy, granular roughening as the cap. Lower down the colour darkens through brown to a definite black, and the surface becomes smoother and harder.

Now dig. The black stem does not stop at ground level: it continues as a long, tough, tapering pseudorhiza that can run another 5 to 15 centimetres — sometimes considerably more — through the soil before ending on a buried root, a fragment of dead wood, or a decaying stump remnant. Excavating that root and photographing it in place is the single most valuable thing you can do at the site. Pulled specimens with the base snapped off lose the character that defines the species.

Flesh and Colour Change

Slice the cap and stem lengthwise. The flesh is white to pale cream, firm, and distinctly tough — a fresh cap is leathery rather than crisp, and dried material is hard. In the lower stem the flesh becomes darker and progressively more corky. There is no latex, no gel and no dramatic reaction: cut surfaces stay whitish or slowly dull to buff, and bruising the pores produces at most a faint brownish stain. Any strong blueing, blackening or reddening on cutting points elsewhere. The smell is mild and mushroomy, not distinctive.

Taking and Reading a Spore Print

Stalked polypores print readily if the material is mature. Cut a wedge from the cap, lay it pore-side down on dark paper or a glass slide, cover it to hold humidity, and leave it overnight. The deposit is white to very pale cream and is often thin, so use black paper and raking light.

Under the microscope the spores are large for a polypore — roughly 12 to 18 by 6 to 9 micrometres — smooth, hyaline, and ellipsoid to somewhat spindle-shaped with a tapered end. They are not amyloid. That combination of a white print and conspicuously long spores is a useful confirmation, because several look-alikes have noticeably smaller spores.

Substrate, Season and Ecology

Despite appearing to grow in soil, Rooting Polypore is a wood decayer. The pseudorhiza is an exploratory structure that connects the fruit body to buried hardwood: dead roots, submerged branch fragments, or the remains of a stump long since covered by leaf litter. Because the resource is hidden, fruit bodies look isolated and randomly placed, often appearing singly or in twos rather than in the tight clusters typical of stump-top polypores.

Fruiting runs from mid-summer into autumn, peaking after sustained rain in warm weather. Oak-dominated woodland is the classic setting, but any hardwood stand with buried decaying roots can produce it. It is nowhere abundant, and repeated appearances in the same square metre usually mean the same buried root is still being worked.

Separating It From the Look-alikes

Polyporus melanopus is the closest confusion. It shares a depressed cap and a stem that is black in its lower half, but its cap is smoother and often more grey-brown, and above all its black stem base is short and blunt — there is no long tapering root to excavate.

Polyporus badius has a strikingly smooth, shiny, chestnut to blackish-red cap that looks polished or varnished, very fine white pores, and a stem black over most of its length. It usually sits visibly on wood rather than appearing to rise from soil, and its cap surface is the opposite of scurfy.

Polyporus varius (also placed as Cerioporus or Polyporus leptocephalus) is smaller and thinner, with a tan, smooth, kidney-shaped cap and a distinctly off-centre or lateral stem that is black only in the extreme base.

Coltricia perennis grows on soil in similar woodland and also has a funnel-shaped stalked cap, but everything about it is brown: concentrically zoned rusty-brown cap, brown pores, and — decisively — brown flesh rather than white. Slice it and the difference is obvious.

Boletes end the confusion instantly: their tube layer pulls away from the cap flesh as a separable spongy mat, their flesh is soft, and none of them has a hard black rooting stem.

Albatrellus species are also terrestrial and pale-pored, but they are chunkier, pale to yellowish overall, have brittle rather than leathery flesh, and grow with conifers without any black rooting base.

Common questions

Why does the Rooting Polypore look like it grows in soil?
Because its connection to wood is underground. The black lower stem continues as a long tapering pseudorhiza that runs through the soil to a buried hardwood root, branch fragment or old stump remnant. The fruit body emerges wherever that root happens to lie, so it looks like a soil-dwelling mushroom until you excavate the base.
How do I tell it from Polyporus melanopus and Polyporus badius?
Look at the cap texture and the stem base. Rooting Polypore has a dry, scurfy to finely scaly cap and a black stem that continues into a long root. Polyporus melanopus has a smoother cap and a short, blunt black base with no root, and Polyporus badius has a shiny, varnished chestnut-black cap and sits visibly on wood.
What does the pore surface look like up close?
