Rosy Bonnet Identification Guide
A field walkthrough for Mycena rosea, the large pink bonnet of beech leaf litter. Covers cap colour and striation, the notched gills, the radish smell, amyloid spores and the lilac relatives it is confused with.
The Woodland and the First Impression
Rosy Bonnet is a litter fungus of broadleaved woodland, and the classic encounter is in a beech wood in autumn. You are walking on a deep bed of fallen leaves, ideally on chalk or limestone soil, and a loose troop of pink-capped mushrooms is scattered across the litter, sometimes dozens of them spread over a few square metres. Oak, hornbeam and mixed deciduous stands produce it too, and it will fruit under conifers occasionally, but leafy litter over base-rich ground is the reliable ground.
The first impression is a mushroom that is too big to be an ordinary bonnet. Most Mycena species are slight, brittle things a centimetre or two across. This one has a cap up to six centimetres wide on a stout stem, with a definite presence in the litter. The colour reads as a soft, clean pink — rose, coral or pinkish-buff rather than lilac or purple — and the cap is usually broadly bell-shaped with a bump in the middle.
Reading the Cap
The cap is 2 to 6 centimetres across, occasionally a little more. It starts conical to broadly bell-shaped and expands to nearly flat, keeping a low, broad umbo at the centre. In old specimens the margin often lifts and becomes wavy or splits shallowly.
Surface texture is smooth and dry to faintly greasy in wet weather, never truly slimy and never scaly. The cap is hygrophanous, so colour depends heavily on moisture: fresh damp caps are a clear rose-pink, often deepest at the centre and paler toward the rim; drying caps fade toward pinkish-buff, cream-pink or almost whitish, with the centre holding colour longest. Because of that fading, judge colour on the freshest specimens in a troop rather than on a single dried-out cap.
Look at the margin with the light behind it. When moist you should see fine translucent striations running in a short distance from the edge, marking the gills beneath — a bonnet character worth confirming.
Reading the Gills
Turn a cap over. The gills are moderately broad, fairly well spaced, and whitish to pale pink or pinkish-cream, often deepening slightly in tone with age. Look at the attachment closely: they are adnate and typically notched near the stem, frequently running down it as a very short decurrent tooth. Under a lens the gill edges are even and paler than the faces, and interconnecting veins run across the spaces between the gills in mature material — the underside looks slightly wrinkled between the plates rather than perfectly clean.
Count spacing rather than guessing: a mature cap of this species carries relatively few gills reaching the stem for its size, which contributes to the open, airy look of the underside.
Reading the Stipe and the Base
The stem is 4 to 9 centimetres tall and 4 to 10 millimetres thick, which is stout for a bonnet, cylindrical or slightly swollen downward, and hollow. Colour is white to very pale pink, usually palest at the apex and picking up a pinker or buff tone below.
The surface is smooth and slightly polished, sometimes finely powdered near the apex and covered in scattered fine fibrils lower down. Look at the very base with a lens: there is a conspicuous mat of coarse white cottony fibrils or downy mycelium that binds fallen leaves and litter fragments to the stem. Lift a specimen carefully and you will bring a small wad of glued leaf fragments up with it.
There is no ring, no volva and no cortina.
Flesh, Smell and Colour Change
Split a fruit body from cap to base. The flesh is thin, white to faintly pink, and watery, and the stem is hollow with a narrow central channel. There is no latex.
Nothing changes colour. Cut and bruised surfaces stay whitish, and the gills do not stain when rubbed. If a pink-capped bonnet blackens, reddens or exudes a coloured juice, you are in a different part of the genus.
Smell is a real diagnostic here and should be tested deliberately: crush a piece of the stem base between finger and thumb and sniff immediately. Rosy Bonnet has a strong, clean radish-like odour, a character it shares with its closest relatives. A complex, layered smell with an odd sweetish component points toward one of the near neighbours discussed below.
Taking and Reading a Spore Print
Cut the cap free, set it gills-down on white and black paper together, cover it with a cup and leave it four to eight hours. Mature caps print reliably. The deposit is white, sometimes with a faint cream tone in thick layers, and the black paper is essential because a white print on white paper is invisible.
Under the microscope the spores are ellipsoid, smooth, colourless and roughly 6 to 9 by 3.5 to 4.5 micrometres. Mount them in Melzer's iodine and they turn blue-grey — they are amyloid, which is a group character worth confirming, since several superficially similar pink woodland mushrooms have inamyloid spores. Scrape a gill edge and you will find clavate to spindle-shaped sterile cells, colourless and thin-walled, without pigment.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
Rosy Bonnet is a decomposer of leaf litter. It works on the fallen leaves and small woody fragments of broadleaved trees, especially beech, breaking them down as part of the litter recycling community rather than partnering with living roots. This is why troops appear in the open litter layer between trees rather than clustered on stumps or logs.
Fruiting runs through autumn, typically from September into November in temperate regions, and can continue into early winter in mild years. It is gregarious: single fruit bodies are the exception, and finding one usually means finding twenty within a few paces. It prefers calcareous and neutral soils and is scarce on strongly acid ground.
Separating It From the Look-alikes
Mycena pura is the principal confusion, and the two are close relatives with the same radish smell. Its colours run to lilac, violet, purple and mauve, sometimes greyish or even yellowish, and its build is generally more slender with a smaller cap. Colour is variable enough in both that stature and the clean pink tone of Rosy Bonnet should be weighed together rather than relying on shade alone.
Mycena diosma is darker, a greyish-lilac to purplish-grey, usually with a distinctly duller cap, and its smell is complex and layered rather than plainly radish-like — a mixed odour with an unusual perfumed or sweetish note.
Mycena pelianthina grows in the same beech litter and has a similar build, but a hand lens on the gill edge settles it instantly: the edges are lined with a dark purple-brown band, quite unlike the pale even edges of Rosy Bonnet.
Mycena pearsoniana is smaller, more lilac, has gills that run distinctly down the stem, and — decisively — inamyloid spores that stay pale in iodine.
Laccaria laccata and relatives can look pinkish in litter, but their gills are thick, waxy-looking and widely spaced, their caps are dry and often minutely scurfy, and their stems are tough and fibrous-twisted rather than hollow and clean-surfaced. They also lack the radish smell entirely.
Small pink Entoloma species in litter give a pink to salmon spore print rather than a white one, so the print alone separates them; they also tend to have more angular, sinuate gills and a more brittle stem.
Clitocybe and Lepista species with pinkish caps are altogether fleshier, with decurrent gills and, in Lepista, a pale pink spore print.
