Rosy Brittlegill Identification Guide

A field walkthrough for Russula rosea, the chalk-hard rosy brittlegill of beech woodland. Covers the matte unpeeling cap, cream spore print, cedarwood smell and the red russulas it is most often mixed up with.

Standing in the Wood

Rosy Brittlegill is a summer and autumn mushroom of broadleaved woodland, and beech is the tree to look for. Oak works too, and mixed deciduous woodland on chalk or limestone is prime ground. You are walking on leaf litter, often on a slope or a path bank, and a firm red-pink cap sits low in the leaves — half buried, so that only a domed patch of colour shows, with litter still stuck to the rim.

The first impression is of solidity. Where most red brittlegills look glossy, thin-fleshed and slightly fragile, this one is hard, chunky and matte, and lifting it feels like lifting a small stone. That combination of a dry, chalky-matte rosy cap and unusually hard flesh is the species in one sentence, and everything below is confirmation.

Reading the Cap

The cap is 4 to 10 centimetres across, sometimes larger, convex at first and expanding to flat or slightly depressed at the centre. The margin stays incurved for a long time and is not grooved or striate — check this deliberately, because striate margins point elsewhere in the genus.

The surface is the key. It is dry, matte and faintly velvety or chalk-bloomed, never polished or greasy, even in wet weather. Colour is a rose-red to coral-pink or slightly carmine tone, but it is characteristically uneven: patches fade to ochre, buff or cream, especially at the centre and where rain has washed it, so a mature cap is often a mosaic of pink and pale straw. Do not reject a specimen because it is partly discoloured; that mottling is normal here.

Now test the cuticle. Take the edge of the cap skin with a fingernail and try to peel it toward the centre. In this species it barely lifts — perhaps a millimetre or two at the very rim — and then tears. Species with cuticles that strip halfway or more to the centre are different mushrooms.

Reading the Gills

Turn it over. The gills are moderately close, fairly narrow, and pale cream to a faint ochre-cream, deepening slightly with age. Attachment is adnexed, narrowing near the stem, and they are brittle — draw a finger across them and they shatter into fragments rather than deforming, which is the genus check that puts you in the brittlegills to begin with.

Two details are worth a lens. First, look for forking: some gills fork near the stem attachment, and short intermediate gills reach in from the margin. Second, check the gill edges near the cap rim, where they often carry a delicate pink or reddish tint in fresh material — a small but useful supporting character for this species.

Reading the Stipe, Base and Flesh

The stem is 3 to 7 centimetres tall and 1.5 to 3 centimetres thick, cylindrical or slightly clubbed, and it is exceptionally firm — this is one of the hardest stems in the genus, chalky and dense rather than pithy. Colour is white with a rose or coral flush over part of the length, usually strongest in the middle or lower half, sometimes almost absent in pale specimens. The surface is dry and minutely wrinkled lengthwise.

There is no ring, no volva and no cortina, and the base is simply rounded, without a bulb or sac, embedded in litter with white mycelium binding leaf fragments.

Cut the fruit body lengthwise. The flesh is white, thick and dense, filling the stem solidly when young and only slowly becoming a little pithy inside with age. Note what does not happen: the cut surfaces do not blush, redden, yellow, blacken or grey, and bruised gills do not stain. Set the cut specimen aside for half an hour and check again — the absence of any slow discolouration is a real character, since several related species grey or darken. There is no latex, which separates the whole genus from the milkcaps.

Smell it deliberately. Fresh material has a faint but distinctive dry, resinous odour often likened to cedarwood pencil shavings or menthol, most noticeable when the flesh is broken and warmed in the hand.

Taking and Reading a Spore Print

Spore colour is the backbone of brittlegill identification, and it must be judged from a thick deposit. Cut the cap free, lay it gills-down on white paper or, better, a piece of clear glass, cover it, and leave it overnight. Scrape the deposit into a heap with a blade and view it against white paper in daylight, holding the paper vertically.

The print here is pale cream — clearly not pure white, but well short of ochre or yellow. Comparing your heap against a reference colour chart is the usual practice, and this species sits low on the cream range.

Under the microscope the spores are broadly ellipsoid, roughly 6 to 9 by 5.5 to 7 micrometres, and ornamented with warts joined here and there by fine connecting lines into a partial network. The ornamentation stains blue-black in Melzer's iodine while the spore body does not. The cap cuticle contains no true gelatinised layer, which is consistent with its dry matte feel.

Substrate, Season and Ecology

This is a mycorrhizal fungus. Its mycelium forms sheaths around the fine root tips of broadleaved trees, exchanging soil-derived water and mineral nutrients for carbon from the tree, so it cannot be cultivated on wood or litter and always appears in association with living trees. Beech is the dominant partner across much of its range, with oak and other broadleaves also recorded.

Look for it from midsummer through autumn, typically July to October, on neutral to calcareous soils. Fruit bodies come singly or in small scattered groups along the same stretch of woodland floor, often reappearing in the same spot in successive years because the mycorrhizal network is perennial.

Separating It From the Look-alikes

Russula sanguinea shares the rosy cap and a pink-flushed stem, but it is a conifer associate, usually with pine on sandy or calcareous ground; its cap is smoother and shinier, its gills become more distinctly ochre-yellow with age, and its flesh is firm but nothing like as chalk-hard.

Russula paludosa is a large, more slender, orange-red to blood-red species of damp conifer woodland and bog margins, often among Sphagnum; its cap is shiny and viscid when moist, its margin becomes striate in age, and its gills often carry a reddish edge near the rim.

The Russula emetica group consists of bright scarlet, glossy, sticky-capped mushrooms with thin fragile flesh, pure white gills, a white stem without any pink flush, and a cuticle that peels easily most of the way to the centre — the opposite of this species on every count.

Russula velenovskyi has a brick to rosy-red cap with an ochre-tinged centre and a more slender stem, but its flesh is ordinary in firmness and its cuticle peels more freely.

Russula aurea can show reddish tones but is marked by golden-yellow gill edges and a yellow-flushed stem.

Milkcaps are excluded the moment you damage a gill: they bleed latex, and no brittlegill does.

Waxcaps in grassland can be rosy but have thick waxy widely spaced gills and a habitat far from beech litter, so setting and gill texture separate them at a glance.

Common questions

What single field test says most about Rosy Brittlegill?
Firmness combined with a matte cap. The flesh and stem are chalk-hard, among the densest in the genus, and the cap surface is dry, matte and faintly velvety rather than glossy or sticky. Add a cap cuticle that will only peel a millimetre or two at the rim, and you have separated it from almost every other red brittlegill in the wood.
