Rosy Wood Mushroom Identification Guide

First Impressions

Rosy Wood Mushroom is a small, neat, softly coloured Agaricus that looks nothing like the robust field species most people picture for the genus. You usually meet it in humus-rich woodland litter, along shaded woodland edges, in conifer plantations, on hedge banks or in mulched garden borders, typically as single fruit bodies or small scattered groups rather than rings or troops.

The overall impression is of a delicate, pale mushroom whose cap centre has been brushed with dusty lilac-pink, standing on a slim white stipe with a skirt. Two things then pull you into the genus: the gills are free of the stipe and change colour dramatically with age, and the stipe base turns yellow when you handle or cut it.

The Cap

The cap is 2 to 5 cm across, occasionally a little more, hemispherical to convex at first with an inrolled margin, expanding to broadly convex or nearly flat, sometimes with a low broad umbo.

The ground colour is whitish to pale buff. Over this lies a covering of fine, pressed-down, radiating fibrils and small scales in lilac-pink, vinaceous or purplish-brown. These are densest at the disc, where they often fuse into a solid darker patch, and they thin out towards the margin, so the outer third of the cap can look almost white. The distribution matters: a dark centre grading to a pale rim, rather than an evenly coloured cap.

Rub the cap surface gently with a fingertip. In this species it flushes yellow, and the yellowing is often most obvious around the margin. Dry weather can bleach the fibrils considerably, so on a sun-exposed specimen look for pigment remnants at the very centre.

The Gills

Bend the cap back or slice a fruit body in half vertically. The gills are free, leaving a clear gap or narrow collar around the top of the stipe, and they are crowded and narrow.

Track the colour, because in this genus the gill colour sequence is the identification backbone. Very young gills are pale greyish-pink or dirty whitish, never pure chalk white. They then pass through a clean pink stage and finally darken to a deep purple-brown as the spores ripen. Gill edges are finely fringed and stay paler than the faces. If you have only one fruit body and it is immature, note the pale pinkish-grey tone and be prepared to come back for a mature one.

Stipe, Ring and Base

The stipe is 3 to 6 cm long and 4 to 8 mm thick, cylindrical with a slightly swollen or club-shaped base, white, smooth above the ring and faintly fibrillose or minutely floccose below. It becomes hollow with age.

The ring sits in the upper third and hangs downwards as a thin, membranous, skirt-like collar, white, often with a faintly woolly or patchy underside. It can tear or collapse in dry conditions, so check the stipe for a ring zone even when the skirt itself has gone.

The base is the diagnostic zone. Handle it and it yellows; split the stipe lengthwise with a knife and the extreme base flushes a distinct chrome to lemon-yellow within a minute or two, then fades to a dingy ochre over the following quarter of an hour. Cap flesh yellows too, but far more weakly.

Flesh, Odour and Chemistry

The flesh is white, thin in the cap and soft. Apart from the yellowing described above there is no reddening and no other colour change. The odour is sweetish and aniseed-like, sometimes described as almond-scented, and is best assessed by crushing a fragment of stipe flesh between your fingers in a warm hand.

Two chemical checks corroborate the section. A drop of potassium hydroxide on the cap surface produces a deep yellow reaction. Crossed lines of aniline and nitric acid on the cap give an orange response, the positive form of the classic reaction used to sort this genus into sections. Neither is essential if the morphology is clear, but both are quick.

Taking a Spore Print

Cut the stipe flush with the gills on a fully expanded cap, lay the cap gill-side down on white paper, cover it with a bowl or glass, and leave it for two to six hours. White paper is best here because the print is dark and shows up sharply.

The deposit is a rich dark purple-brown to blackish-brown. That immediately rules out the white-printing genera with free gills and a ring, and equally rules out the salmon-pink printing genera. Under a microscope the spores are small, smooth, thick-walled and ellipsoid, about 4 to 5.5 by 3 to 3.5 micrometres, dark brown in water.

Substrate, Season and Ecology

Rosy Wood Mushroom is a litter and humus decomposer, not a wood rotter and not a root partner. It grows in leaf and needle litter under both broadleaves and conifers, in woodland, plantation edges, shelter belts, parks, cemeteries, hedge banks and mulched beds, on soils with a good organic layer.

The season runs from midsummer to late autumn, peaking after warm rain. It is widespread in Europe and reported across temperate North America. Because it likes disturbed humus, gardens and landscaped ground can be as productive as natural woodland.

Separating the Look-alikes

Agaricus purpurellus and the closely allied Agaricus dulcidulus sit in the same section and share the yellowing base and sweet odour. They are typically even smaller, with more saturated, more purple-red fibrils covering a greater proportion of the cap, and they lean strongly toward conifer needle litter. The distinction is one of degree, so record cap width, the extent of the coloured fibrils and the habitat carefully.

Agaricus comtulus is the same size and also yellows, but its cap is whitish to pale yellowish with no lilac or vinaceous fibrils at all, and it is a species of grassland rather than woodland litter.

Agaricus porphyrizon looks like a scaled-up version, reaching 8 cm or more, with a heavier build, a strongly purple-brown fibrillose cap and vivid yellowing in the stipe base.

Agaricus xanthodermus is much larger, 5 to 15 cm, with a whitish cap that greys and often looks squared-off when young, a thicker ring, and a base that flushes intense chrome yellow instantly. Its odour is sharply phenolic or ink-like rather than sweet and aniseed-like, which is the quickest separation.

Agaricus sylvaticus is bigger with coarse brown fibrillose scales, and its flesh reddens rather than yellows when cut.

Lepiota species can mimic the silhouette, since they too have free gills and a ring, but their gills stay white or cream and never pass through pink to purple-brown, and their spore print is white. A print settles it in a couple of hours.

Field Checklist

  1. Small cap, 2 to 5 cm, pale with lilac-pink to vinaceous fibrils concentrated at the centre.

Common questions

How quickly should the yellowing appear?
Split the stipe lengthwise and watch the extreme base. In Agaricus semotus a clear chrome to lemon-yellow develops within a minute or two, then dulls to a dingy ochre over the next ten to fifteen minutes. Cap flesh yellows much more faintly. Very old, waterlogged or frosted fruit bodies can react weakly, so test a fresh specimen where possible.
What habitat should I search for it in?
Look in humus-rich litter under both broadleaves and conifers: woodland edges, plantation rides, shelter belts, hedge banks, parkland and mulched garden borders. It decomposes leaf and needle litter rather than wood, so a deep organic layer over reasonably drained soil is the thing to look for. Midsummer to late autumn, best after warm rain.
How do I tell it from the very similar small purple-tinged Agaricus species?
Compare the intensity and extent of the cap fibrils along with size and litter type. Agaricus purpurellus and Agaricus dulcidulus are usually smaller with more saturated purple-red fibrils covering more of the cap, and they favour conifer needle beds. Agaricus comtulus is the same size but has no lilac tones at all and grows in grassland.
Do the gills ever look white?
Not truly. Even at the button stage the gills are a dirty pale greyish-pink rather than the clean white of the white-spored genera, and they darken through pink to deep purple-brown as spores mature. If gills remain chalk white right through to a fully expanded cap, take a spore print, because a white deposit points you to a different genus entirely.
