Russell's Bolete Identification Guide
A field method for Aureoboletus russellii, built around its extraordinarily long, deeply lacerate-reticulate stipe, dry cracked cap, yellow pores and olive-brown spore print in oak woodland.
First Impressions
Russell's Bolete announces itself by proportion long before colour. Walking an oak ridge in high summer you notice a bolete standing unusually tall for its cap size, with a stalk that looks as if it has been carved with a coarse rasp. The cap is often modest, 4-12 cm, but the stipe can reach 8-15 cm and looks disproportionately long and slender. Get down to eye level with it: the stalk surface is broken into a deep, raised, shaggy network of ridges with sunken pits between, so exaggerated that it appears shredded. Nothing else in eastern oak woodland does this so dramatically, and once you have seen it the species becomes unmistakable at a glance.
Reading the Cap
The cap is dry, never viscid, and quickly develops a finely to coarsely cracked, felted or subtomentose surface. In dry weather the cracking can become pronounced, revealing paler yellowish flesh in the fissures. Colour ranges from reddish-brown, brick or rusty-tan through olive-brown to yellowish-brown, often with a slightly darker centre and paler margin. Shape moves from convex to broadly convex and finally almost flat, with a margin that may hang slightly beyond the tube layer as a narrow sterile fringe. Feel the surface: it should be dry and suede-like, not tacky.
The Pore Surface
Turn the cap over and check that the underside is a spongy layer of tubes rather than gills. In this species the pores are bright yellow when young, dulling to olive-yellow, olive or brownish-yellow with age. They are relatively large and angular, and they are typically adnate to slightly depressed around the stipe, sometimes appearing to run a little way down it. Press a thumb firmly into the pore surface and hold for thirty seconds, then look again: there is no dramatic blue flush. At most you may see a slow, faint brownish discolouration. That absence of blueing is a genuine character worth recording, not just a non-result.
The Stipe: the Decisive Feature
This is where the identification is won. The stipe is 8-15 cm or more long, 1-2 cm thick, roughly equal or tapering upward, and covered from top to bottom with a coarse, deeply raised reticulum. The ridges are not the fine, neat mesh of a Boletus - they are tall, ragged, shaggy and often lacerate, with deep pits between them, and they frequently darken to reddish-brown or maroon while the pit floors remain paler yellow-brown. The base is often narrowed and may descend into the litter with a tapering, root-like extension. There is no ring, no partial veil and no volva.
Flesh and Colour Change
Slice the whole fruit body in half from cap centre to stipe base. The flesh is pale yellow to whitish-yellow in the cap and yellow to yellow-brown in the stipe. Watch the cut face for a full two or three minutes. There should be no blue, and no strong red or black staining - at most a slow, mild brownish or faintly pinkish change. The flesh is soft in the cap and distinctly more fibrous and tough in the stalk, which is why the stipe holds its shape long after the cap has slumped.
Taking a Spore Print
Boletes print well if you give them enough tube surface. Cut the cap free, set it pore-side down on white paper, cover it to slow drying, and leave it four to twelve hours. The print is olive-brown to dark olive-brown. That colour is a useful anchor: a white print would send you to Amanita or another gilled group entirely, and a pinkish print would indicate Tylopilus. Microscopically the spores of this species are large and longitudinally striate under high magnification, a distinctive feature shared with only a small handful of related boletes.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
Russell's Bolete is ectomycorrhizal with oaks, and to a lesser extent with other members of the beech family. Search dry to mesic upland oak and oak-hickory woodland, ridge tops, wooded roadside banks and the mossy edges of trails where oak roots run shallow. It fruits from early summer through early autumn, responding to warm rain, and typically appears singly or in small scattered groups rather than in troops. It is a fungus of eastern North America and is rarely abundant, so most collections are one or two fruit bodies at a time.
Separating the Look-alikes on Morphology
Heimioporus betula (Austroboletus betula) is the classic confusion. It also has a very long, deeply reticulate stipe, but its cap is smooth, brightly reddish to orange-yellow and distinctly viscid or even sticky when moist, rather than dry and cracked, and its reticulum ridges are more regular and less shredded.
Aureoboletus projectellus likewise has a long stipe with raised reticulation, but it associates with pines rather than oaks, its cap is a duller purplish-brown to reddish-brown with a projecting sterile margin, and its reticulum is far less lacerate.
Strobilomyces species have grey to blackish, coarsely shaggy-scaly caps, whitish flesh that reddens then blackens on cutting, and a blackish spore print.
Xerocomellus and Hortiboletus species share the cracked cap but have short stipes with no reticulum at all, and most of them flush blue somewhere on cutting or bruising.
Tylopilus species may have reticulate stipes but give a pinkish to flesh-brown spore print and have pale pinkish pore surfaces at maturity.
Suillus species growing under conifers have viscid caps, often a ring or glandular dots, and never this exaggerated shredded reticulum.
A Compact Field Sequence
Under oaks? Stipe far longer than the cap is wide? Reticulum tall, ragged and deeply pitted over the whole stalk? Cap dry and cracking rather than sticky? Pores yellow to olive with no blue flush on pressure? Flesh pale yellow and essentially unchanging? Olive-brown print? That sequence identifies Aureoboletus russellii without needing anything beyond a knife and a sheet of paper.
