Scaly Shield Identification Guide

A hands-on guide to recognising Pluteus petasatus, the pale, robust wood-chip shield with brown fibrillose scales at the disc. Covers free gills, the pink spore print, the ringless stipe and how to rule out Volvariella, Agaricus and Entoloma.

The first impression

The classic encounter is not in old woodland at all but in a managed, disturbed place: a wood-chip mulch bed in a park or car park planting, a sawdust pile beside a timber yard, the crumbling remains of a hardwood stump, or ground where buried construction timber and root fragments are rotting. The fruitings can be substantial, with several stout mushrooms appearing over a few days from late spring right through to late autumn, and they often look too clean and too big for their scruffy setting.

The silhouette reads as a solid, pale, broad-capped mushroom on a straight white stalk, 5 to 15 cm across the cap, with nothing dramatic about it until you turn it over. The single most informative movement in the whole process is that turn: free gills that stop short of the stipe, and a colour somewhere between white and salmon, immediately narrow the field.

Reading the cap

The cap starts strongly convex, almost hemispherical and rather thick-fleshed, then expands to broadly convex and finally nearly flat, sometimes with a low broad umbo and a slightly wavy or split margin in large specimens. The ground colour is the giveaway: whitish, cream or pale greyish-buff, considerably paler than most of its relatives.

Over that pale ground, brown to greyish-brown fibrils lie flat and radiating, condensing into small appressed scales concentrated over the centre. The disc can look almost uniformly brown while the outer half stays nearly white, so the cap presents as a dark centre grading into a pale margin. In dry weather the surface is silky and the margin may crack; in wet weather it is slightly greasy but never truly slimy. There is no veil, no patches and no volval remnants on the cap surface.

The gills

Gills are the key to the genus. They are crowded, fairly broad, and completely free, ending in a clear gap all the way round the top of the stipe so that a section shows a clean channel between gill edge and stalk. Check this properly with a knife rather than by eye.

Colour follows a fixed sequence: pure white and rather soft in a young button, then cream, then unmistakably salmon or flesh-pink as the spores ripen, and finally a duller brownish-pink in old age. Gill edges are typically slightly paler and finely fringed under a lens. Nothing here bruises green, blue or black.

The stipe and base

The stipe is 5 to 12 cm long, 1 to 2 cm thick, cylindrical or slightly thickened downward, solid and firm, white to cream, and covered in fine longitudinal silky fibrils that may darken to brownish streaks toward the base. Two negative characters must be checked deliberately, and both require digging the fruitbody out whole:

There is no ring and no ring zone. There is no volva, no sac and no membranous cup at the base. What you should find instead is a slightly swollen or club-shaped base sitting in wood chips, sawdust or rotten wood, often with white mycelial strands binding the substrate into a lump. If a sac or a ring is present, you are not in the shield genus.

Flesh and colour change

Slice one from cap edge through to base. The flesh is thick over the disc, white, firm, and it stays white. There is no latex, no oozing, no reddening, no yellowing and no blue-green flush. Recording that stability is genuinely useful because several look-alikes do change colour and one important genus reddens strongly.

Taking and reading a spore print

A print is essential and easy. Choose a cap with gills already showing a pink tinge, cut the stipe off flush, place the cap gills-down on white paper, cover it, and leave it four to eight hours. Half-on-white and half-on-glass works well if you want to judge the tone accurately.

The deposit reads salmon-pink to pinkish-brown, warm rather than purple, and is quite dense from a large cap. Under a microscope the spores are smooth and broadly ellipsoid, and the gill faces carry thick-walled cystidia armed with two to five short apical hooks, a striking feature of the group this species belongs to and well worth looking for if you have a scope.

Substrate and season

This is a wood decomposer, and the substrate is normally hardwood in a fragmented or processed state: chip mulch, sawdust, bark beds, buried timber, old stumps and the wood-rich soil of felled areas. That preference for man-made and disturbed wood habitat is one of the practical field pointers, because it puts the species in gardens, parks, industrial verges and landscaped beds far more often than in undisturbed forest. The season is long, running from spring through to the first frosts, with the biggest flushes after warm wet spells on freshly laid chip.

Separating it from the look-alikes

Deer Shield, Pluteus cervinus. The nearest relative and the commonest confusion. Its cap is uniformly darker, a mid to dark brown with radiating fibrils across the whole surface rather than a pale ground with a dark disc, it is usually smaller and thinner-fleshed, and it grows more typically on intact logs and stumps than on chip beds. In a mixed collection, lay them side by side and the pale versus dark cap difference is obvious.

Willow Shield, Pluteus salicinus. Smaller, with a grey cap often carrying greenish or bluish tints, especially at the base of the stipe, and a preference for waterside broadleaf wood.

Volvopluteus gloiocephalus and Volvariella species. These share a pink print and free gills but always emerge from a distinct membranous sac at the base. Volvopluteus additionally has a strongly viscid greyish cap. Digging the base out is what catches them, so never assess a stipe base that snapped off in the substrate.

Agaricus species. Also free-gilled with pink young gills, which is why beginners mix them up. But an Agaricus has a distinct ring on the stipe, and its gills go on past pink to chocolate brown, giving a dark brown print rather than salmon.

Entoloma species. These give a pink print too, but their gills are attached to the stipe, often with a notch or a decurrent tooth, and they grow from soil rather than wood.

Amanita species. Free white gills and a white print, plus a ring, a volva or both. The pink print and absence of any veil structures separate the shield cleanly.

Leucoagaricus and Lepiota. Free gills again, but a white spore print and a distinct ring, usually growing in soil, litter or grass.

Compare overall cap colour.
