What you are looking at
The find that starts this identification is usually a white cylinder standing upright in bare or disturbed ground: a roadside embankment reseeded last year, the raw edge of a new footpath, a heap of settled wood chip, the churned soil beside a building site, or the well-used corner of a playing field. The shape is unlike almost anything else. A young specimen is a tall, narrow column with parallel sides and a rounded top, tapering slightly at the base, and the surface is broken into shaggy, upturned white to buff scales that stand away from the cap like a ragged fleece. Older specimens in the same troop tell the rest of the story, their rims flared, blackened and dripping.
Reading the cap
Measure the cap along its length rather than across it, because when young it is far taller than it is wide, commonly 5 to 15 cm high and only 3 to 6 cm broad. The ground colour is white, warming to pale ochre or buff over the smooth central disc that stays intact while the rest breaks up. The shagginess is the key: the outer skin splits into coarse, concentric rows of upturned scales that are white to fawn with darker tips, thickest towards the base of the cylinder and finer near the top.
As the cap ages it does not simply flatten. Instead the lower margin rolls outwards and upwards, thins, turns inky grey then black, and begins to liquefy from the rim inwards, so a mature specimen looks like a white bell with a black dripping skirt. On the ground beneath, dark stains and an inky smear are common. Expansion, blackening and collapse can all happen within a single day in warm weather.
The gills and the process of dissolution
Slice a young specimen down its length and the gills reveal themselves as extraordinarily crowded, narrow, and free from the stipe, packed so tightly that they appear as a solid ivory sheet in section. There is a narrow air channel between the gill edges and the stipe.
Watch the colour sequence, because it is diagnostic. Gills start pure white, pass through a soft pink flush, then a dark greyish brown, and finally jet black, with the change running from the cap margin upwards towards the disc. As each zone turns black it autodigests into an inky fluid that runs off the rim. If you find a specimen that is white at the top and black and dripping at the bottom, all three colour phases are visible on one mushroom at once.
Stipe, ring, base and flesh
Pull a whole specimen free rather than cutting it, because the base matters. The stipe is 10 to 20 cm long, sometimes more when it grows up through deep grass, slender at 1 to 2 cm thick, white, smooth to very finely silky, and hollow with a fine cottony thread running down the cavity. Low on the stipe, and often loose enough to slide up and down between finger and thumb, is a narrow white ring; it frequently detaches entirely and slips to the base, where it sits as a white collar. The base is slightly swollen and tapers into a short root-like extension in loose soil.
The flesh is thin, soft and white, and does not change colour when cut in the young stage. There is no sheathing sac at the base, no snakeskin banding on the stipe and no volval patches on the cap.
Taking a spore print
This species will make a print for you whether you ask for it or not, but the trick is timing. Take a specimen whose cap is still mostly white with only the extreme rim greying, cut the stipe flush, and set the cap on white paper under a cover. Within an hour or two you will have a deposit, and the paper will also collect drips of the same inky liquid. Read the dry deposit rather than the liquid: it is jet black. Nothing else will accumulate that quickly or that darkly. Under a lens the spores are smooth, dark, lemon to ellipsoid in outline, and each has a conspicuous pore at the narrow end.
Substrate, season and behaviour
Shaggy Ink Cap lives on buried plant remains in rich, disturbed, nitrogen-loaded ground rather than on standing wood or as a tree partner. Typical ground includes lawns and verges, recently landscaped soil, gravelly car park edges, wood chip mulch, compost-enriched borders, riverside gravel and the trampled margins of paths. It fruits from early summer through to hard frosts, with the main flush in autumn, and appears in loose troops or lines that follow buried roots, old turf or a mulch seam. Because it recycles buried organic matter, the same patch will often produce fruit bodies for several consecutive years and then stop when the substrate is exhausted.
Separating it from the other inky species
Coprinopsis atramentaria grows in dense clumps from buried wood or roots, has an egg-shaped to bell-shaped grey to grey-brown cap that is smooth or only faintly fibrillose with a few small scales near the centre, and never carries the coarse white shag. Its cap is broader relative to its height and it lacks a free-moving ring.
Coprinopsis picacea is dark chocolate to blackish with large, flat, white felty patches, giving a magpie-like pattern rather than upturned scales, and grows singly on leaf litter under beech.
Smaller inky species such as Coprinellus micaceus form tight clusters of tawny, finely glistening caps only a few centimetres tall, with a strongly grooved margin, and no shaggy scales.
The parasol mushrooms, Macrolepiota and Chlorophyllum, share coarse cap scales but expand to a broad flat plate on a long stipe, keep firm white gills, deposit a white spore print and never liquefy. Since Shaggy Ink Cap dissolves and prints black, one overnight test settles the question.
In arid regions, Podaxis pistillaris looks superficially similar as a tall pale club on a woody stem, but it stays dry and closed, splits raggedly to release powdery brown spores, and has a tough woody stipe rather than a fragile hollow one.
