Shaggy Parasol Identification Guide
A step-by-step field reading of Chlorophyllum rhacodes, built around its coarse uplifted cap scales, smooth unbanded stipe, thick double ring and the saffron-to-red colour change of cut flesh.
The first impression
Shaggy Parasol announces itself as a big, pale, coarse-textured mushroom growing in enriched ground rather than open pasture. Typical settings are the shaded strip inside a conifer shelterbelt, a nettle-choked hedge bottom, the edge of a garden border where compost has been spread, a churchyard yew bed, or the humus-rich fringe of a dune slack. Young specimens look like drumsticks: a tight, barrel-shaped, smooth grey-brown head balanced on a stout pale stem. Once they open, the head becomes a broad plate covered in thick uplifted brown scales sitting on white flesh, so the cap reads as a coarse mosaic rather than a smooth surface. They usually appear in troops, arcs or full rings, and one patch tends to produce for years.
Reading the cap
Measure across the open cap, which is normally 6 to 15 cm and sometimes wider. The young cuticle is a continuous, dull greyish to warm brown. As the cap expands, that skin cannot keep up and tears into thick, coarse, recurved scales that lift away at their outer edges, exposing the paler fibrous surface beneath. The scales are large and few, not fine and numerous, and they are arranged in rough concentric rings.
One feature is worth pointing out because it is easy to overlook: the central disc remains unbroken. There is always a smooth, darker brown plate at the very centre of the cap, from which the scales radiate. The margin of a young cap is often fringed with hanging fibres left by the veil. The cap surface is dry at all ages and never viscid.
The gills
The gills are free from the stipe, crowded, soft, fairly broad, and whitish to pale cream at all ages. Look at how they end: they stop short of the stipe against a slight collar, leaving a clear channel around the stem, and this shows well in a lengthwise section.
Colour change matters here. Draw a fingernail along a gill face, or leave a specimen in a basket for half an hour, and the bruised areas slowly go dull reddish then brownish. Old caps often show scattered rusty blotches on the gill faces for exactly this reason.
Stipe, ring and base
The stipe is 5 to 15 cm long and 1 to 2 cm thick, widening steadily downwards into a distinctly swollen, club-shaped or bulbous base. Two things about its surface are diagnostic by omission and presence. First, it is smooth: dull whitish to buff, with no snakeskin pattern of dark girdles and no shaggy scales. Second, it discolours readily, going ochre-brown to dull reddish where handled, so a specimen that started white looks distinctly stained by the time it reaches the car.
The ring is one of the best features on the species. It is large, thick, complex and double-edged, with a broad flange and a second brownish rim on the underside, and it is free enough to be slid up and down the stipe with a fingertip. That combination of a movable, thick, double ring on a smooth stipe with a bulbous base is a strong signature.
Inspect the bulb closely. In this species it is swollen and rounded, blending into the stipe, without a sharply cut horizontal rim or gutter around its upper edge.
Flesh and the colour reaction
Cut a whole fruit body vertically with a clean blade and watch the exposed surfaces for one full minute. The flesh is thick, soft and white on cutting, and then in the stipe and cap it flushes a strong saffron to orange, deepening to a dull brick or reddish brown before finally going dingy brown. The reaction is most vivid in the stipe cortex and at the junction of cap and stem. This colour change is central to the identification and is best judged on a fresh, fully hydrated specimen; in drought-stunted material it can be weak.
Taking a spore print
Cut the stipe flush with the gills, set the cap gill-side down on white paper with a corner over dark card, cover with a bowl and leave for four hours or overnight. The deposit should be clean white, at most with a faint cream tinge. Scrape it into a heap before judging, because a thin dusting can look colourless. This step is not optional if you want certainty, because the closest relative in warm regions prints a distinct grey-green, and that difference is visible only in a proper deposit, never on the gills themselves.
Substrate and season
Shaggy Parasol is a decomposer of rich humus, not a tree partner. It grows on soil loaded with decayed organic matter: compost heaps and their surroundings, leaf mould, nettle beds, hedgerow bottoms, conifer plantation edges and shelterbelts, garden borders, stable-manured ground and stabilised dunes. It prefers some shade and shelter and is much less a creature of open grassland than the tall parasol. Fruiting runs from mid summer through to late autumn, often in rings that expand outward year on year as the mycelium works through a patch of humus.
Separating it from its look-alikes
Macrolepiota procera, the parasol, is taller and larger, with a cap that can reach 30 cm and carries a pronounced dark central umbo. Its decisive feature is the stipe, which is banded with dark brown snakeskin-like girdles over a pale ground; Shaggy Parasol has a plain smooth stipe. Parasol flesh scarcely changes on cutting, at most turning faintly pinkish, and it favours open grassland and roadside verges.
Chlorophyllum olivieri is essentially the same build but duller, its cap greyish to olive-brown with scales that blend into the background rather than contrasting sharply with white flesh; it shares the reddening flesh and typically grows under conifers.
Chlorophyllum brunneum is the trickiest. It differs in the base, which forms a broad bulb with a sharply cut horizontal rim and a shallow gutter around the top, and in the ring, which is simpler and thinner, with a single edge. It leans towards very disturbed, open, often coastal ground.
Chlorophyllum molybdites, of warm regions, has paler, flatter, more scattered scales, tends to occupy open lawns, and deposits a grey-green spore print, which is the only wholly reliable separator.
Amanita species with scaly caps are told apart by their universal veil structures: a sac or a distinctly rimmed volval bulb, a ring that is fixed rather than sliding, and flesh that stays white on cutting.
Leucoagaricus leucothites is smaller, with a smooth white cap that lacks coarse scales entirely, and a gill flush towards pale pink with age.
