Shield Dapperling Identification Guide

A field-by-field walkthrough of Lepiota clypeolaria, the slim woodland dapperling with a woolly, shredding stalk sheath and a scaly ochre cap. Covers the full character sequence and the small Lepiota look-alikes that share its litter habitat.

The first impression

You usually meet the Shield Dapperling in the quiet interior of a wood rather than along its sunny margins: a slim, pale, faintly shaggy little parasol standing alone or in loose scattered troops on deep leaf litter or needle duff. Nothing about it is bold. The cap rides at roughly a hand's span above the ground on a stalk that looks as though someone has wrapped it in loose wool, and the whole fungus sits in a narrow tonal range of cream, straw and dull ochre-brown. The character that stops most people is that woolly stalk. Very few small woodland agarics carry a soft, shredding fibrous sheath under a vague ring zone, and once your eye has learned the look you can pick the species out from several paces away.

Working through the cap

The cap is 3-8 cm across, at first bluntly conical or bell-shaped, then expanding to a low dome and finally almost flat with a broad, persistent central bump. The centre is the darkest part, a smooth continuous disc of ochre, tan or warm brown. Away from that disc the surface cracks up into fine, appressed, fibrous scales that run radially outward and become progressively sparser and paler, so the outer third of the cap often looks nearly white with buff flecks laid over it. Check the very margin: it is thin, often slightly ragged, and frequently hung with soft cottony fragments of the veil that give it a fringed, unfinished edge. The cap is dry to the touch and never viscid, and the flesh below the cuticle is thin.

Gills and the underside

Turn the cap over. The gills are free, standing clear of the stalk with a small gutter between the two, and they are crowded, narrow, soft and white to faintly cream. Some collections take on the very palest yellowish or pinkish-buff cast in age, but they never become genuinely pink, brown or grey. Gill edges are finely fringed under a lens. Free white gills combined with a scaly cap immediately puts you in the parasol and dapperling group, and the small size then narrows you to Lepiota and its relatives.

The stalk and its base

This is where the species declares itself. The stipe is 4-9 cm tall and only 4-8 mm thick, cylindrical, hollow, and slightly swollen at the very bottom without ever forming a bulb or a cup. Above the ring zone it is smooth, silky and white. Below it, the veil has been laid down as a continuous woolly-floccose sheath of soft cream or pale yellowish fibres, and as the stalk lengthens this sheath tears into shaggy bands and tufts. It does not consolidate into a firm ring you can slide up and down; instead you get a diffuse, cottony, easily rubbed-off collar that often disappears entirely on older specimens, leaving only the woolly lower half as evidence. Dig out the base rather than pulling: there is no sac, no volva, no rooting tap, just white mycelial threads binding leaf fragments.

Flesh and colour change

Slice the fruit body lengthwise. The flesh is thin, soft and white in cap and stalk alike, and it is essentially unchanging - no red flush, no yellowing, no slow browning beyond the ordinary discolouration of a drying specimen. The odour is weak and hard to pin down, usually described as faintly rubbery or slightly unpleasant when the flesh is crushed, and it is not the sharp gas-like smell of some relatives. The lack of any dramatic colour reaction is a useful negative character in a group where several look-alikes flush or stain.

Taking a spore print

Cut the stipe off flush with the gills, set the cap gills-down on a sheet that is half white and half black, cover it with a cup or a bowl to hold humidity, and leave it for four to twelve hours. The Shield Dapperling drops a pure white print, sometimes with the barest cream tint in a very heavy deposit. That white print rules out every brown-spored woodland agaric with a scaly cap. If you have a microscope, the spores are the clincher for the genus section: they are long, narrow and spindle-shaped with a distinct projecting spur at one end, in the region of 12-18 micrometres long, and they are dextrinoid, staining red-brown in Melzer's reagent.

Substrate and season

The Shield Dapperling is a litter saprotroph. It fruits from soil, humus, leaf drift and needle mats in both broadleaf and coniferous woodland, and it seems especially at home in shaded, humus-rich ground under beech, oak, spruce and pine. It is not attached to living roots and not fruiting from wood, so if the fungus is clearly emerging from a log, a stump or buried timber you should look elsewhere. Fruiting runs from mid-summer through autumn in the temperate north, peaking after prolonged rain, and specimens usually appear scattered or in small loose groups rather than in tight clusters.

Separating the close relatives

Lepiota magnispora is the trap. It has the same woolly-sheathed stalk but the veil and stipe wool are a warmer yellow to yellow-buff, the cap centre is often more strongly contrasting, and the spores are appreciably longer. Without a microscope, weigh the overall yellow cast of the veil and the more strongly clay-brown cap disc.

Lepiota cristata is smaller and neater, its cap white with concentric rings of small rusty red-brown scales, and crucially its stipe is smooth and silky throughout with a thin membranous ring - no woolly sheath at all. Its crushed flesh has a strong, distinctive smell.

Macrolepiota procera and the larger parasols are on a completely different scale, with caps well over 10 cm, a tall snakeskin-patterned stalk, and a thick double ring that slides freely up and down.

Chlorophyllum and Leucoagaricus species share the free white gills but have smooth or differently scaled caps and firm, non-woolly stalks, and several flush red or orange when cut.

Small Amanita species can be superficially similar in the field, but they have a universal veil: look for a membranous sac, a rim, or concentric rings of tissue at the stalk base, none of which the Shield Dapperling ever shows.

Inocybe and Pholiota may match the fibrous brownish cap, but their gills are attached rather than free and their spore prints are dull brown to rusty, which the spore print test settles at once.

A field sequence to run

Small scaly cap with a darker smooth disc, free crowded white gills, woolly shredding sheath on the lower stalk, no volva, no firm movable ring, white spore print, growing on woodland litter. If all seven line up, you are standing over Lepiota clypeolaria.
